    Beethoven placed two different melodies and being the two bassoons counterparts to the "Ode" leitmotif, only makes this part simply divine. Unhappily people who do not have trained ears are not able to listen to this detail on concerts, that's why this video is so important and enriching. Thanks.

      Thanks for the kind comment! When I was a kid, the standard edition of the score had the 2d bassoon resting, which is sinful. So glad to play this version!

    • @user-lf8mq2li3i
      @user-lf8mq2li3i 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Xjohn7 do you know why they used to remove the 2nd bassoon and what prompted them to add it back? This is such an interesting revelation to me as I was introduced to Choral by recordings WITH the 2nd bassoon and I suppose when I later came across recordings without it (Karajan's, say) I just assumed it's drowned by the basses!

    • @Xjohn7
      @Xjohn7  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@user-lf8mq2li3i Not sure - my guess is that an editor might have left it out of a major edition and until we got "scholarly" in the 70s no one noticed. Just a guess.

      Honestly this is a bit like the bass solo that is Call of Ktulu (sic), it's so low in the mix that you need to be used to listen for the bass guitar in songs for it to be audible

    I love the way they play off of one another the first minute or so, like they are having a delightful conversation, Beethoven was such a genius, the individual parts could have been pieces on their own in some respects, that's why when you listen to his symphonies, you never get bored, there is always more to discover.

    Having listened to this symphony for most of my life, I only came across this a few days ago, and have been checking many performances of Beethoven's Choral symphony to see how other conductors handle this duet.Only this performance and that of Frederic Chaslin/JSO [of those that I have checked so far] do this duet the justice it rightly deserves. Thank you so much for the enormous effort you have put into allowing music lovers everywhere to derive even greater joy from this fantastic symphony!

    Thank you for this video. I checked Breitkopf and CCARH's scores and found that they have the second bassoon silent in this passage. But Beethoven's MS (PDF p.258) has, by the first bassoon's entry "2do Fag col B". So we've been denying second bassoonists their share of this passage. :(

    The matter is that i follow every style of music and i feel happy... Jazz, or classic or rock or any other music, i follow the composition to the deepest parts and i enjoy it.
    Every detail.... its amazing...
    Of course classic is more adorable and jazz more complex... But even in soul music, one finds special countepart solis on bass or drums, that show how inspiring real art is...

    A former bassoon player and mediocre one at that. I would have hated to read the sheet music for this given how I was normally by myself most times, but boy would I have loved to even attempt it and learn it. Going to find a recording of the 9th now. Hopefully I can hear the solos.
    My bassoons are having a musical conversation on just the daily happenings.

    I really like this part, and I would like to play it but I’m a tuba player, and I can’t find any sheet music where they converted it from bassoon to tuba. Someone did, because I watched a tuba duet of ode to joy where he did the bassoon part. Anyone have any suggestions?

    • @johnrichardson3055
      @johnrichardson3055 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Bassoons and tubas should be the same key. You might have to manage the octave (I'm not sure how high tubas go comfortably) but here are the bassoon parts.

      In my opinion it's on the level of JS Bach, it's just done in the classical way, meaning Beethoven is the other greatest composer to ever live.

    • @daviydviljoen9318
      @daviydviljoen9318 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It counterpoint, so it's not really supposed to be a melody, counterpoint is a harmonic tool that exists in music, the aim is to create a counter melody that can function independently while still harmonising with the main melody... You can hear it in all of Bach's music. Notice how the counterpoint complements the main theme, and even at times it echoes fragments of it. And that is what makes this so beautiful, because we don't have one counterpoint melody, but two.

    This is where the bassoon shines. Writing it primarily as a bass instrument is wasteful.
