The drawback with having VN passport in addition to US passport is that VN passport/citizen will take precedent; i.e. some legal obligations afforded to US citizen will not be extended to dual citizenship. For example, they confiscate your properties and you can only sue them in VN, not in US since you are VN citizen first and foremost.

The US passport gives you the best chance of leverage the embassy for getting a fair trial. That’s all you can ask for given the level of corruption in VN and trial without jury.
