With best play, it was the way to survive the longest most probably. It thought "if I play like this, I Can probably force the rooks and queens trade, leading to this very long endgame, so it's the way to survive the longest" While we thought "nooo you won't be able to win if you accept all those trades while down material" Stockfish simply doesn't think the same way, it's not going for traps for the sake of a trap, not going for a sacrifice if there is a refutation (even if it's hard to find) and if it evaluates the position as less losing after a piece trade, it will play it regardless of the fact that it ruins it's only winning chances because it's just coded like that. As a general rule, curling into a ball is better for surviving an attack while aggressiveness and activity are better for surviving bad positions. Look at the stockfish lines for the duras gambit which is playable but losing. It's willing to sacrifice even more material to get activity and keep its king safe. I even had it sacrifice a knight in that opening to relieve pressure on the kingside.
