Robert Whitfield is actually Simon Vance. In a tweet in recent years Simon says he doesn't know why he went by another name back then. Simon reads all the John Gardner and Raymond Benson continuation novels as well, available on Audible and unabridged.
Read Colonel Sun years ago & couldn’t remember much about it. This is a boring novel so far - only the beginning bits regarding ‘M’s kidnap are exciting, the rest is all just talk. (I am only half way through, but it’s a trudge). Edit:Thank you for sharing though.
What's infuriating about this plot, and so many others, is that the protagonist (Bond) takes on a small army of baddies rather than calling for backup.
Bond must live on.The best Bonds will always be I.F.It will be interesting see how Bond is going to change authors must be there own man not copy of the master.Amis is defiantly his own man
@@matthewleasure1361 Oh dear! Let me explain. There are novelists who succeed in writing in such a manner that the fashions and customs of their day are secondary to their observations about life and human experience which would have had relevance over many a millennia. By dated I meant too concerned with attitudes and behaviour of those particular decades; ones which, to many, already seem a touch weird, and indeed offensive. I really enjoyed both Fleming and Amis.
You can sure tell the Ian Fleming didn't write this one... Just another dry and boring spy story using the name James Bond kind of what I expected I guess.
Just don't see the point in lame Bond books written by other people who are just trying to copy Ian Fleming's style and doing it poorly. A few of Fleming's novels are pretty weak as it is, these things suck.
I’m a fan of these new Bond books the character will continue forever well done 👍
New, this was written in 1967!

I tried to read a Raymond Benson Bond novel.
Couldn't get past the third chapter.
Absolute rubbish.
Simon Vance has a very 1950s quality to his voice. Perfect for Bond.
Colonel Sun does rattle on and on, doesn't he?
This is one of the best Bond stories not done by Ian Fleming.
I am enjoying this
Well written Kingsley Amis.
it is Amis, not Ames....show some respect and spell authors name correctly if you like their work.

Read this book as a teenager, last year I bought his book, "Jake's Thing", signed.
If you read about the history of this time period then the storyline is quite realistic
WOW!
Sounds very similar to an Ian Fleming Bond novel.
Perhaps that was the intention...?
@cacambo589 yes but another such novel wasn't well written

Almost 50 years old
Bad guy monologue, how unfortunate !
Not bad I can't really tell.its not Fleming but perhaps less old fashioned

Err, this isn't by Fleming
OK but the earth didn't move for me. Very dated.
Really...who would think a 50 year old book is dated. Bet you think Fleming'snovels are really dated.

The earth moved for Ariadne at least twice 😉
Yea , Treasure Island is so dated as well , it sucks !

I guess you could always Google the name Kingsley Amis
