I saw this movie when it first came out. Shirley was at the peak of her career. I especially remember her in Woman Times Seven and Gambit with Michael Caine. A bit later an A Mule for Sister Sarah with Clint Eastwood.
I believe that Shirley Maclaine started out as a "gypsy," ( dancer in the chorus) Hitchcock supposedly discovered her and cast her in his film "That's the Trouble with Harry". A quirky little movie with no music and no dancing.
I think she was peaking during "The Apartment " and "Irma laDouce".. and then her comeback in "Terms" .. phenomenal actress, comedian and dancer. Not the best singer. . unfortunately.
Absolutely brilliant saw this on TV with my Mum about 3 months before Christmas, what a film and Shirley what a singer, dancer and star she really brings the part to life, I was born in 68 and I think it was brought out in 67 and I love it they don't make stuff like this anymore, the closest to these sorts of films recently is Cabaret and Moulan Rouge both brilliant 😊😅🤣😂
Big budget movie adaptations of Broadway shows needed a big movie star to bring in the customers. That was at least the thinking of the movie studio heads. That’s why Shirley got the film of SWEET CHARITY over Gwen Verdon, Barbra Streisand got HELLO DOLLY over Carol Channing, Audrey Hepburn got MY FAIR LADY over Julie Andrews, Topol got FIDDLER ON THE ROOF over Zero Mostel and Lucy got MAME over Angela Lansbury.

But why was this (seemingly perfect) piece on Broadway----- panned by critics? in NYC ..... Seems like a winner but was a bust on Bway with only 2 years of legs? Help me out....(???)
Yours is the only comment that is plugged in. This film bombed because nobody wanted to see Shirley limp through the role Gwen Vernon originated on Broadway. She was a train crash that the editing made worse.
After seeing Gwen Verdon do this on Ed Sullivan I can understand why the film bombed. Shirley is good, but Verdon is electric. Even Debbie Allen, Ann Reinking and Donna McKechnie danced it better in the rival than Shirley here. Shirley is best in I’m a brass band.
I respectfully and strongly disagree about Allen, Reinking and McKechnie (who I’m obsessed with in Turkey Lurkey Time) Shirley is dancing but also acting. She’s has the goofy energy that is this side of cringe, her dancing is so small, just like Fosse loved with Vernon right there to advise Shirley. Allen, too smooth, too polished. She’s too cool to be cringe. Same with the other dancers, they don’t have nervous awkward energy that is needed for Charity. Now that Ed Sullivan performance was all kinds of amazing, I don’t know why Fosse didn’t have Vernon cast but I love Shirley!!

These clips have only convinced me that watching Sweet Charity would be so much cringe that I might jab bamboo skewers through my eardrums, and that saddens me since I usually really enjoy Bob Fosse movies.
Real fur was popular until the late 70s. I remember a warehouse when I was little that sold racks of them and women would go crazy for them. It was a status symbol to have one. I could never get my head round it.😢
Actually, Bob Fosse directed the movie and Gwen Verdon was on set as asst choreographer. She worked side by side with MacLaine during rehearsals and filming. The Verdon influence in both dance and singing is unmistakable.
For my money Shirley Maclaine's performsnce in Sweet Charity is the Best Performance by an actress in a musical BAR NONE! She's Sensational!

She's Gwen Verdon's clone down to the red hair. Not discounting her talent but that should have been Gwen's role.
First time to see her, she's very good , too... Gwen's a close CLONE to Shirley, but Shirley is a "One of a Kind"...
