Oh, I bought my father the D-550 Cassette Deck ago - late 1980s. That machine had the simplest of level displays - a single LED. A simple deck that suited him just fine.
Appreciate the education Trevor, wish I would have seen this 2 years ago, had a Marantz Mod 125 with the exact same issues, took to an idiot repair shop and ended up leaving it there because the jerk never fixed properly and wanted his $250 for repair. Was a teenager in late 1970's (when FM Radio ruled the World) so FM Tuners very important part of my life, own 15. Have a commercial free Jazz station that I get good reception (pegs 5) in my area, if this station goes off-air, then I am in deep shit because no other station worth listening to.
if you are tunning a lot of radio's to tune than get a FM transmitter and feed it a tone so you do not have teo worriy about a copyright issue and then once you have the radio set you could try the normal reception.

My roommates had that system. The amp was nice, I did some repair.

For BPC at least its decent BPC. For FM I like CKUA.....a lot of good tunes...Friday Night Blues Party on now.
