This was a great series. Britian has produced so many excellent drama and comedy series and i am trying to collect them all so when my mobility is reduced i can sit and watch them while sitting here in my house in North Germany. German TV is rubbish, out of an hours programme 35 minutes are adverts
This was a wonderful series. I am watching it for the second time right from the beginning. It is as fresh and exciting today as it was on the first day it aired ❤🇬🇧
I'm so glad this serise poped up, I've heard about it before, but never had chance to see it, only six minutes into it and I'm already love it, thanks Yvonne!
I'm getting chills at the palpable tension between Cora and the Dowager Countess during their first scene together. To imagine, that they were that 'frosty' with each other for so many years, before tragic events made them bond together more closely, is quite sad. And yes, yes, I know it's only a tv series 😆. But the acting and directing is so good, they just feel like real people to me.
I would rather have John Bates padding round the back of me in the dressing room than Thomas. They had a common experience. War brings people together. It is how Bates got the job. There were and are aristocrats that are like Grantham. That said, most prefer to have their agent/bailiff/factor/estate manager deal with matters of money between them and their tenants. the dirty business of the financing of these great houses whilst the ordinary people remain crushed in the gutter. It's strange that there hasn't been a revolution in the UK. All that insane wealth among so few people and so much poverty among so many people. It's still going on to this day. From Norway
Well...after the suffering and deprivations of WW1 and WW2 and the aftermath (rationing went on for quite a while still) life did get better for basically everyone in society for many decades. Better education, better healthcare, less physically demanding jobs (or they were overtaken by immigrants, which was a positive, at least initially), cheaper products, amazing new technologies like the internet. I was born in 1980 in Germany and as a young adult, we very much still had the feeling, that everything was trending upwards. There was a slight worry about climate change, sure, but otherwise we thought, our part of the world at least, was going to be peaceful and prosperous forever. And that the rest of the world was going to follow in our footsteps sooner or later. We would all be one big, happy family, basically. So many bad things have happened since then, I don't even know where to start. But anyways. People don't tend to start a revolution, while their own lives are rapidly and tangibly improving. It's only now, where things are going to shit that attention is being focused on those that own an inappropriate amount of wealth. Both because it feels sickeningly unfair and because it feels like the very people who have amassed such riches, are simultaneously responsible for most of the problems they're facing.
@@SuzetteGrist Let me tell you, I have read tons of English history, so much in fact that I know more about your history than my own country Norway's history. And I love Black Adder, seen all episodes several times. Still, it's odd that the English people don't raise up to this unfairness.
I'vr never seen the first episode (or much of the first series), but now i can see how toxic O'Brien was and destructive her influence, particularly on Thomas. Mind you, from this initial episode we learn that he's already up to his neck in mire without any need for O'Brien's poisonous manoeuvring.
cozy family setting with bits of trials scattered in everyone. one good thing though to note is that the humanoids still have a guilt conscience remorse and one or two pints of love hidden behind the stony grey faces. AI agony for our era is........
The kind of moral and social values, both amongst the servants and the lords, needs to be brought back and adopted into our 21st century society - being born in 1970 in Catholic Rural Ireland, at an awkward time when the (then) “new way” was being adopted, I’ve come to realise over the years just how much both the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and beyond to the present, were so toxic, corrosive and destructive to our modern society and to our moral and social fabric
Okay, okay, I can take a hint! No idea why but Downton clips and montages have been dropping into my feed since Friday so I'm off to get my boxed set out! 😅
Lady Grantham is an ignorant, busy fighting her own battles with her mother-in-law, the Dowager Dragon.... Only lending half an ear to O'Brien's evil slander, Cora just don't care.
