Tekken 8 charges $70 for the base game, $100 to $300 for more expensive editions, plus charges for upcoming DLC characters via season pass, plus added an in-game shop post launch, plus snuck in a surprise battle pass recently. A really great fighting game is getting marred by absurd monetization inclusions that are getting out of hand.

    • @sonicmania9993
      @sonicmania9993 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

I'm sorry your review got banned, which seems like a dumb situation.
But just in case you're interested: the reason to buy the fighting game day 1 is because that first year is the most fun time for serious players to play the game online & with friends in local co-op. We're all learning our moves/combos and the flow and tactics of the game, developing a main and a few alts -- and all the good players are at basically the same place. It's a race to get better, and I'd even say it's fun to get beat in a fight honestly by someone who has gotten better more quickly than I. Kudos to that guy, y'know?
If you wait until the release of that complete edition including DLC (after 1-3 years), try to go in and learn those things and compete against highly-ranked players. You will get utterly trashed by those guys who have been having fun and getting stronger since Day 1.
For casual players, buying the complete edition (after 1-3 years) is the best way to go if they are patient. Some buy both versions to support the fighting game market.
I personally love this first year online -- so I'm all in day 1 and buy the character DLC as it comes out (season passes, usually). Of course, I would never consider battle passes (which is a trash move), and I learned the hard way in the past to just wait on the a la carte costume purchases. I play with basic costumes for the first few years, and then buy the complete edition when it's eventually on sale for $20 (for archival reasons, and to have some fun going back and playing with all the cool alternative outfits).

Saying game prices haven’t raised is not only categorically false but completely delusional.
Not only, have games gone from 70$ in the start of the X1/PS4 era to now 90$ (in some cases 95$ CAD) for the base version, but they’ve also added so many avenues for revenue, it’s rare you can even get the whole experience from a game even buying the “season pass”.
Games have gotten ridiculous and have almost become a luxury hobby and not just something that people can reliably turn to.

New games for 4th gen consoles sold for $50-$90. Inflation adjusted that's $120-$220 today. That's what people are talking about when they say games haven't gone up in price over the years, it's far from delusional.
Harada specifically mentioned the 90's which is why I chose 4th gen consoles to compare. If you want to compare with 8th gen consoles $60 in 2013 is worth about $80 today. "Season passes" were definitely already a thing back in 2013 by the way.

Harada was asked about it and he made an analogy with chess. He basically said that the characters in fighting games are game mechanics unto themselves and should not be charged for. If you were to go to a store and buy a chess set, you wouldn't have to pay extra to get bishops and rooks. They deliberately held back information relevant for consumer to make their economic decision whether to purchase/support the game or not. If only we had proper regulation in video gaming (we do not), this should be HIGHLY illegal. They manipulated information flow and public perception in order to boost success. I've been ranting about the monetization of fighting games for years. And it just gets worse.
With fighting games, it's very easy to be strong armed into season passes, which have been normalized to always be more than one. The reason why is anyone who takes a fighting game seriously will want all the characters to better understand their match ups, and even find a new main. The result is one game can cost you over 120 dollars, even more, unless you're willing to wait years for a price drop or special edition with several but not all the passes, at which point the player base has significantly dwindled.
So to see battlepasses and microtransactions on top of what's already some of the most premium priced games in the medium, it really pisses me off.

It says they can collect data from your Switch profile, guaranteed it is likely the same for XBL and PSN. I am betting that includes them being able to look at the other games you have played NOT just QA for Tekken or whatever Namco games you are playing.

Fighting games used to be my favourite genre many years ago, I even defended the multiple paid editions of SF4 and MvC3, but even then I started to see where the industry was going to push the genre and, lo and behold, it came true. Pubs/devs locking content behind a paywall and other egregious practices. It's unsurprising since fighting games have rosters, which makes it so easy to lock characters for money. I remember the joy of playing through an arcade mode and unlocking characters, intro/ending cinematics, and other content.
So now, I just can't be bothered with fighting game releases anymore, and I certainly don't support the monetisation practices that are shoved. But also, I just can't be bothered keeping up with meta and character changes to remain competitive online or if you participate in tourneys.

Players should be able to ask and demand for whatever character they want if you’re gonna charge like this. Out of touch response from harada.

If the gaming industry needs to continually raise the price of games (how long until base price is $80, $90?), along with special editions that cost $100 and up, microtransactions (that cost $12-$20 per item i might add), multiple season/battle passes, just to stay afloat, then how am I supposed to believe they're doing it right when I see Larian Studios release Baldur's Gate 3 with a one time price, that offers such a full, content rich game, and that's it...what am I supposed to believe?
Games are expensive to make? I am sure they are, no question there. But if they're so expensive to make, that eventually you will make them so heavily monetized that people simply won't be able to afford them at all, YOU are doing something wrong.

I've stopped purchasing day one fighting games precisely for that reason.
It's better to wait for some price drop with the season passes included.
However... In the old days, you had to play to unlock stuff.
Today, it's a shame what we got.

I said it before not long ago but if, as is claimed, a full priced $70+ game NEEDS F2P monetization in order to continue content updates, maybe it’s time games pull back on their scope a little.

If they pull back on the scope of a sequel, then who would buy a game that's just the same as the previous one?

I'm smelling the revolt before a "new enlightenment" in gaming. It may be dark for a while... but keep up the good fight and don't stoop to strike. Much Love Gamers!

A new landscape is just beyond the horizon. I'm excited for the journey to get there, even if it's rough seas for a while. Gaming won't end, but will change, and that's ok. An overhaul of the industry is necessary.

Under no circumstance should DLC in any form cost MORE than the base game.

That quote from Harada-san makes sense. If you want to play gaming experience like in the PS2 era, play indie games: They (usually) have a smaller scale, are polished and have simple monetisation.
I think there's needs to be more transparency around the economics of games development. Especially the high fidelity games (AAA games).

Idk how these corporations keep getting away with this when there are literally laws against bait and switch tactics.
