    The pitch is what you are calling the rake.The pitch size is the distance the prop and boat travels per revolution.
    The smaller the pitch the more revs you get,but the less top speed.The bigger the pitch,the less revs you get,but more top speed and the slower it gets on the plane.Too large a pitch,and you won't reach top revs (wot)and the boat might struggle to plane.If you liken it to a car gearbox,the smaller the pitch,the lower the gear.
    My choice would be to get the the stainless prop re pitched.(they twist the blades to give more pitch,so more distance per revolution.The weight of the prop doesn't slow your boat down,it just makes the prop stronger and less flexible.

      Hey Stan. Thanks for tuning in. No, I know what pitch is. The Rake is something totally different. Side by side both props were 19 pitch but the original prop had much more rake. You can physically see it. The rake is the degrees the prop blade leans back, or negative rake which most props are. 0 rake the blade is straight up and down and positive rake its leaning forward towards the boat. The more negative rake the higher the boat is out of the water at higher speeds. Less boat in the water the faster it goes! I've got another SS prop, but its only 17 pitch. It was 13 3/8 diameter, but it's been ground down to 12 diameter. But it was hitting 6200 rpm's but only 34 mph. I'm gonna try it again now that the heavy casting deck is out. I just want the motor in the proper range. So once I start adding some weight back in, it should come down in rpm's. I'm okay with 30+ mph but 38+ was much more fun!     Get the hand grinder out and customize it like the old one. You know, a little “off the top.” Knew an old timer long time ago that would aluminum weld them up and grind the blades back in using a template. Looked brand new and equal when he was done. A real craftsman. He was deaf so I guess he had nothing better to do. While you’re doing that, I’m gonna go to the outboard store and ask for a “do stickey” and see what they give me…lol…great video!     Nice old 1969, 6hp Fisherman. A little beat up though. Mine's a '70 in mint shape. Had it since I was 13 in '73

    Not Arguing HERE, but just how I see it from my experiences.
    RPM's is just that, if your running your motor at 5200 rpms then everything will turn the same speed after gear reduction on the prop shaft if everything is in good working order, so if the new prop we'll say turns at 4000 rpms with the motor turning 5200rpms then every prop will turn the same 4000rpms at 5200rpms on the engine.
    Pitch is pitch unless the measurements are off or misstated by the manufacturer.
    If you think about the old prop being wore down not only have you lost face area for pushing water but you may have lost a small amount of pitch on the prop if the tops and bottoms of the blades have been worn down.
    I do agree that weight or mass will affect rpms but only the amount of time it takes to get to the same 5200rpms. If you couldn't obtain that 5200rpms then yes you would be running slower.
    My experience is with smaller motors 40hp and under and I have found that bigger is not always better and that no 2 props with the same dimensions will ever react or preform the same even from the same manufacturer.
    This is just my observations of some 45+ years of being on the water.

    We’ve all gotten a good lesson in props from you and these last few prop videos. It’s interesting to see how all the different ones effected your speed and handling. I went with manufacturers recommended “all purpose” props on both of my outboards, but now I’m wondering if I’m missing out on some lost speed!

      Yeah. I'm definitely getting an education here. I always went with the all purpose props too. And read that over/under propping will shorten the life of the outboard. I assumed the 13 x 19 was it. I believe the Starcraft was rated for an 80 hp, but that was before it was stripped out. Now I'm back to square one. I hate getting knocked backwards!     Well, prop fitting starts as a science with diameter, pitch, rake and material (plastic, aluminum or stainless) combinations to deal with but then evolves into an art as you have to contend with boat weight, weight distribution, hull configuration, water density (fresh vs saline) etc... In the end, one has to realize that an outboard is like a car with a one-speed only transmission so you have to decide what performance characteristics you favour: acceleration (water skiing) or top speed (reaching Grill's asap).     Stacking the symptoms to diagnose the problem.
    When I got this skiff it had an aluminum 19 pitch on it and two spares on the deck. A stainless 17 pitch and a aluminum 17 pitch. With everyone saying "use the stainless they're better" not knowing or caring the pitch. I did switch to it, gaining mph and rpm. with a fully loaded boat, trolling setup, compared to the empty with the 19. One of these days I'll put on the aluminum 17 to see if there's even an actual difference between stainless and aluminum as everyone says-kind of busy with the Key West boat right now though.

    Hey T O O The rake on a prop is the blade leaning forward or backward. positive rake leaning backwards towards exhaust side will give you lift on transom. When you look at the two props on bench the one on the left has pos rake you look from the side and you can see it leaning towards the exhaust side of prop. I think that’s correct I could be wrong but you get my point basically don’t you JT hope that helps a little 🇺🇸🇺🇸🐠🐟🎣🛥🌴⛱🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

    Played a similar game last summer with my 14' smokercraft and 74' merc 20hp - Aside from prop/rpm experiments the most dramatic speed improvement came from removing injection foam from under the flooring { I weighed the foam chunks and totaled 120 lbs} the other very noticeable improvement was I built a jack plate to raise the motor so the cav/vent plate on the motor was just skimming the top of the water on plane - greatly improved the steering and I went from 20 mph to 26! Don't know if that helps but thought I'd share- Incidently I have a 25hp-73" johnson looking for d-21and r-34 jets - Anybody known source to order specific jet sizes?- I noticed you talked changing jet sizes on this 60 - Thanks

    Got another 3 cylinder Johnson because my 75hp had a badly scored cylinder. Wondering if the 75hp carbs will make it any faster the motor I just got is a 73 65hp

Shouldn't be much overall difference in the two outboards being that close in years other than the carbs. The throat on the 75 may even be larger and fit better. Curious to know what happens.     Ok this may have been mentioned and I missed it....is it possible that when you first ran it and hit the upper 30s, that it was over reving the motor to perhaps 6000 rpms? I think it would be possible since there was no tach, and now watching the tach you're not over reving it? I don't know, every time I change a prop, there is a calculatable change in speed/rpm/hole shot etc.

    hey man/ i just got back from my annual Christmas trip tp fort Myers. love Florida.
    I think shes doing great. only consideration is maybe, it is for me, that with the gear i want meaning weight, it will basically go the same speed with a 15 or 17 pitch without care for weight. the 17 for me was a mil e an hour slower but sounded so much better than 15 or small pitched props. plus my motor didnt come with airbox at all, so little louder. im looking for one. 14 pitch will pull a skier at 39mph ,6000rpm....

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. The prop is 13 x 19p- just a standard cheap prop- and I wasn't happy with it. Choosing the right prop for your boat & motor isn't an easy task- everyone that has a 60 hp Johnson are not all using the same size prop. Everyone's boat size and weight are not the same. If you are happy with the old prop's performance then I would suggest you replace it with the same size/pitch prop and not go by what someone else is using. The part number for your prop should be stamped on the hub- inside the prop along with the size. The right prop for your boat/motor should run at 5000 - 5500 rpm's at wide open throttle to achieve max horsepower, If your motor is the same as mine. I've been through a few prop's trying to achieve that goal- like I said not an easy task!

      @@michaelmilohanovich like I said- you may go through 2-3 props before you find the right one. Go to marineengine.com- look up your year and model- see what sizes they offer in the gearcase props schematic- I would probably go with the most standard size but thats up to you to pick- and/or try this "prop finder" and see what is says. www.go2marine.com/propeller-fit-guide

    I woulkd say go buy my numbers below noting thatr you will be able to put whatever , Im thinkin strippler pole, and just run less ptch prop,
    rake will be the same in a model like solas 3 i think are the ones i tired, amazon took two i tried t back. kept 14 for spare trolling and skiing prop.

      You got some? Hahaha When I got these 70hp carbs I thought they were gonna be 64D jets like the 87 70hp I use to work on. That thing was a rocket! Well the jets were only 52D so I didn't gain much over the 46D's that were in the 60 carbs. But it does run much better with the 70hp carbs. Thanks for tuning in & Stay tuned for the next episode !

    one prop is probley a power prop and the other is a speed prop power prop gives you better take off but less top end speed speed prop slower take off better top end speed im sure you probley already knew this just trowing my 2 cents worth in...love yur vids
