    Howdy Sir, thanks for the video and instructions. Did I need to put anything on either side of the hoses that snug up to the check valve (ie:clamp or silicon)? Thanks again.

    • @commonsenseripsomehelpful
      @commonsenseripsomehelpful  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi @Olmud, you are welcome. Because we are working on the suction side of things, there is no outward pressure trying to push apart our fittings and connections. More specifically as we push down the hand pump, we are actually creating suction in that hose which; pulls in on all the fittings and connections, pulls in the one-way check valve to draw the soap up. The short answer of my long explanation is; no, you do not need any hose clamps or silicon to hold the components together. Thanks for your question... be well.

  • @Zebrajellyfishphoto
    @Zebrajellyfishphoto 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is that valve absolutely necessary? I did this years ago in another house and don't ever recall having a problem. Someone told me that I needed to seal off the top of the soap bottle itself because it requires that it has a little bit of a vacuum so that it doesn't seep back down into the bottle under the sink. I just did it in my current house but my tube is more than 16 inches because to get from the sink top to the bottom of the bottle looks about two and a half feet. I'll report back on my results without a check valve! Thanks for the video!

    • @commonsenseripsomehelpful
      @commonsenseripsomehelpful  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Richard Mauro, Yes!!! The one-way check valve with screened pickup is absolutely necessary for at least three reasons: 1) the check valve will not allow the soap to creep back down into the bottle which would make you have to pump all the air back out and re-prime the pump (especially over a longer hose like you are using). 2) the screened pickup will keep any debris or dried soap from getting sucked into the hose and/or pump and blocking and/or ruining the pump. 3) the screened pickup also keeps the end of the hose from getting sucked to the bottom of the soap container also blocking/not allowing soap to be picked up and pumped up through the pump. While not using the valve might work, over a shorter period of time you will need to address problems that using the valve will avoid. Also, creating a vacuum in the soap bottle will actually suck or draw the soap back down the hose into the soap bottle and make you have to re-pump or re-prime the pump. Hope this helps. Thanks for commenting. Would love a follow up after you set yours up.

    Did you cut the hose to place the check valve in it ? If you did what did you use to seal the hose and the check valve?

    • @commonsenseripsomehelpful
      @commonsenseripsomehelpful  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Gabriella, Yes, I cut the hose to place the check valve into it. The hose is 1/4" ID (Inside Diameter) and the check valve has 1/4" inlet and outlet OD (Outside Diameter) nipples so you can slide the hose over the inlet and outlet nipples of the check valve fairly easily (you can even put some of the liquid soap onto the nipples to make them more slippery to slid the hose over). The friction between the nipples on the check valve and the hose is enough to hold the check valve in place (there really is no need for hose clamps or any other type of retaining method to keep the check valve in place) because there is no real pressure being developed in the line/hose. Hope this helps and please don't hesitate to ask any other questions you might have for me to help you get your new soap dispenser up and pumping! ;-)

    Problem is that ppl make the bottle air tight so if you notice the bottle all scrunched up its actually sucking the soap back into the bottle so dont make it air tight. Check valves a good idea but not really smart if the bottles air tight. All the valve is, is a ball bearing that seats into a cup so pretty much any valve will work even a fish tank check valve.

    • @commonsenseripsomehelpful
      @commonsenseripsomehelpful  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike Usa, Thank you for pointing that out! That is a great point I didn’t even address. While I drilled out the cover to push the rubber hose through, I did make it loose enough to not be airtight so that it would be able to draw air into the soap bottle as the soap gets drawn out of the spout onto a sponge. Thanks again for your input... greatly appreciated! Merry Christmas!

    I set it up exactly as you recommend. It worked great for about a week, and now the pump doesn't;t stay primed. Any thoughts on how to improve this so that the pump stays primed?

    • @commonsenseripsomehelpful
      @commonsenseripsomehelpful  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Tina. aaaaAAAAAAAH... troubleshooting. Challenge accepted!!! lol. My first thought is the one-way check valve. What did you use for the check valve? (I am going to assume... hehehe... that you used the recommended/linked to one here...) so let's check that valve... Take the valve out and blow into one end. The end that the soap container was on should allow you to blow into and through it. Now check the other direction (which I assume will be the problem) by blowing into it. You should NOT be able to blow into and through this end as this end is where the valve should stop the soap from flowing back into the soap container thus losing your prime, which sounds like what is happening.
      If you can blow into and through the check-valve from the hand pump side, there might be a piece of dirt or hardened soap or something keeping the valve open - you can try to wash the valve out with some warm soapy water. You can try to clean it with a toothpick or opened paper clip. If you can't clean it, replacing it would be the only other solution because this valve is what makes the system work so well.
      Also, I tweaked my "hack" and updated it with using a different one-way check-valve with a screened/filtered pick-up tube... that video is here: th-cam.com/video/1S38LlRMAxY/w-d-xo.html
      Hope this helped.
      Looking forward to your reply.
