I actually have my timbales set up with the high drum on the left because I recently discovered that I’m a lefty percussionist, and that’s thanks to Shiela E.
First learned of Kalani from the Live at the Acropolis concert with Yanni in 1994, then saw him w/ Yanni live at Radio City Music Hall in NYC in 1996. Amazing percussionist. Kudos to you Sir.
Love playing Latin percussion and steel pan coming from a drum kit background. It give me an advantage of having more gigs. There’s a timbale method book I found on Amazon I have that is very helpful for starting out on timbale. Great job.
There is a score of a piece called Zunzun that features Timbales on the Patreon site. I also recommend searching for “timbale notation.” There are some standard practices.
Rookie here. I just bought a gorgeous used set of Afro Timbales, made by Ludwig in the early 90's, in which the shell is gold plated. I was a little worried about scratching and dinging up the shell when striking with sticks. I'm wondering if they make striking pads or something for higher end timbales to not scruff up the shell? Thanks in advance and much love!

You can knock your hearing out with timbales, rim-shots are destructive. Then you'll have a souvenir, tinnitus. Young people, don't forget to protect your ears and think about the other players. What do you advise for salsa, steel, or brass ? Or is it only a matter of taste ? Do they come in maple shells (joking) ?
Now that I know that the timbale drums are high pitch timpani, I just can't un-hear it. It used to sound like it has its own unique sound, now all I hear is high pitch timpani 🤭
Provinces os Matanza cuba the Timbales were created to emulate the maraca sound then then the cowbell was ad. The Timbal name has nothing to do with orchestra Timpani.

Man I always wanted to buy a set and learn. My favorite musical instrument of all time. Thank you sir.
The timbales require a lot of dedication, its not easy to play but if you have the will to learn you'll master it
If someone can't learn from you they just can't learn. You the Man
Thank you.

Cool video, I love the sound of these drums, they really cut through.
Good introduction for rookies. Keep on your good work.
Great overview. Thanks for another great video. Maybe you could have talked about the traditional names for the "little" one and the "big" one.
what heads to use for timbales? and what pitch/note sounds good? to tune them too? if I use a drumdial what setting should I use?
Not sure about drumdails and such but the timbals sound about a 4th apart from eachother. So if the top is C then the bottom would be G
Excellent work
In the intro you are playing cáscara en 3/2 and then cowbell in 2/3
Yes - Thank you for noticing.
Excellent brother. God bless
sir, can i use snare head as timbales head? how will it sound?
I'm attempting to write out a part for timbales for a latin marching band show, would you be able to tell me how to notate some of these sounds?

Is it easier to learn Timbales if someone knows how to play the drums and not necessarily latin drums? Hoping for a reply
Great video, great host, and great channel
I have played percussion. But I am left handed so shouldn’t I keep the smaller timbale on the left ? It is my dominant hand
Left-handed players should reverse the orientation not only of the shells but the cowbells as well.

Great video. I'm going to finally get a pair. What is more common 13 and 14" or 14 and 15"? Thank you.

Thanks 👏
Man I wanna learn timbales but seems there s no complete tutorial in internet, do u have some book recommended?
There are tons of tutorials on internet, just not in English, try searching timbal tutorials in Spanish
Wonderful video thanks so much b
Fun! Thank you 😊
What pitch are the drums tuned to?
C and G, hope this helps
@@slurpii4669 which one is C?

can you tell me what paila is ?
Stick
'Pailas' is another word for 'timbales' (not 'stick').
Just so you know you started in 3/2 clave but when you went up on to the bell you came in cruzao, or backwards and not in clave

Thanks for this, it's great! Can you play rimshots quietly?
Look up a rim click
what is the rythm at the very beginning
Are you playing paradiddles ?
Thanks so much.
Kalani, tropical timbales come from the instrument on this video: bCjd9Nb5Mfc . Your timbales lesson is very clear.
Where can I find the rest of your lessons? Is there a link even if I have to pay for the lessons? Thanks
Thank you! :-)
Great teacher want to continue with your lessons, pls help me out,, can pay for lessons.
Love your videos!!💯 but Timpani can also set up backwards depending on the country or playing style
yeah, German style is lowest on the right.
This is also setup for Left Handed players. Timbales are reverse of congas and bongos.
I have Latin percussion timbales
It’s cool and all, but it’s gotta have more cowbell!!!
Kalani, I’m telling ya, you’re gonna want that cowbell!!!!
GUESS WHAT?!??! I GOT A FEVER AND THE ONLY PRESCRIPTION IS MORE COWBELL!!!!!!!!!!!
Nah, two cowbells and a red jam block are enough
Classic SNL lol
@@slurpii4669dude, there’s no such thing as “enough cowbell.” To even think that is sacrilege.
Cymbal is missing
Timbales are a Cuban instrument!? Daem ... My Puerto Rican family has been lying to me my entire life 😂
