I ATTEND A CLASSIC CAR AUCTION DURING WINTER!

- Welcome back all,
In this video we head across to Letchworth Motor Auctions (LMA) to visit their classic, retro and performance sale. This is an auction I always look forward to attending as I only have to travel a short distance to get there!
I was shocked by the amount of classics that had such low milage. There was a Saxo VTR and a Mk5 Ford Cortina that both had 11,000 warranted miles from new! I really don’t know where these stunning low milage classics are spawning from but both the cars were in immaculate contidion.
My star of the auction was the lovely Mk2 Fiesta XR2, which was one of the cleanest examples I’ve seen for a long time. There were a few modern classics that I focus on in the video too & they made no money at all, real bargains!
Quite a lot of the classics went provisional, I’m not sure why maybe it’s the fact it’s December and people are focused on buying Christmas presents rather than adding a classic to their collection. Saying this a lot of the cars did eventually sell as you’ll see in the video.

There's a few doing similar videos out there, but editing the sale in after each car tour makes for a much better viewing experience. I hope it makes the difference for you. 👍
Thank you! I’m glad you appreciate the time and effort that goes into editing these videos 😁
Great video, a bit sceptical about the timing belt change on the 2000 Mini 😂
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ another great auction vid mitch , nice 1 fella.. its great to follow you around these auctions, ill be after a classic very soon so getting good info about prices and stuff is very handy... cheers m8. 💯
15:43 : Yes it's in exceptional condition but it is a Base spec model and only 1.6L Engine. If it was a 2.0L Ghia or 2.0L GLS etc it would go over 10K easy.
also the colour
Another awesome video.!!!!!
Am loving it 👌👌👌👌👌👌
Great video. Can't wait for next year. Thanks again
Another great video ,the cavalier was great but that cortina was stunning .
Mitch, another very informative and interesting vlog ! 👍
Put the hubs in the oven Mitch for a few minutes and the bearings in the freezer for a while. The bearings will then easily drop in and you won’t damage the hubs. The bearings will tighten once the hubs cool.
Thank you for the advice mate! I’ll do just that, will put them in the oven when mums not in 🤣
Great video as always that Cortina was mint would have loved that Cheers Mitch
Brilliant video thanks for uploading. It brought back some great memories. I had two XR2's which I sold and an RS Turbo, which was written off by a Ringtons tea van. i loved them all and haven't found a car yet that I had so much fun in
The RS Turbo, I would have to question the quality of the repairs and other work that’s been done, if you go to that extent and leave overspray, what else have you cut corners on.
I agree, not the best quality of repairs done!
Excellent mitch thank you God bless and happy Christmas 🎄 lad
Thank you pal! Hope you have a great Christmas too 🎅🏻
Another great auction vid, well done Mitch, and thank you.
Thank you for watching! 😎

Cheers.
Thank you pal! Wishing you and your family a merry Christmas & happy new year too 👍🏻
That Escort si was an absolute bargain. Thanks for the video Mitch.
I like your format. Jim, auctioneer, also leads the WB and Sons auctions in Newcastle. Worth a trip.
I’m glad you like the format of the videos! I attend WB & Sons auctions regularly too, you can find the videos on my channel as well 👍🏻
Really good to see you doing so well with the channel Mitch.
Thank you mate!
Your videos are getting better with each uploading, great job.

Thank you pal, glad you liked the variety of classics in this video 😎
That cortina was beautiful Mitch I was digging it ! had one back in the day same colour but auto lol
Great vid 👍
Another great video full of bargains Mitch well done mate 👍🏻🏴
Glad you enjoyed the video mate! 😎
Top presentation worthy of subscription
Thank you for subscribing to the channel! 👍🏻
Great ideo I think lots of people really like classic cars
Keep on truckin. Nothing good comes easy.
Had both the xr2 and xr2i in red in my youth. What was crazy was the vtr. I had an 03 vtr. Bought it for 1k, only has it a month and sold it for 1500quid. Was pulled over in 30 minutes of buying it. This was in 2010. Not long bought a 1970 Triumph Herald 1200 for my wife so she can come out with me when I'm out in the Escort. Nice to see the valuation as only paid 2.5k and its in similar condition. Great video Mitch. Trip down memory lane
Mk5 cortina🤤🤤🤤🤤. Super video as always Mitch!!
Was a stunner! Thank you mate 😎
You know your stuff bonny lad 👍
Enjoyable video mildly spoilt by the at least 8 million adverts.
The XR2 was the standout for me, an absolute ringer for my own XR2 from back in the day.
Seeking the thick end of £20k in these market conditions seems way too strong to me.
Interesting to note the lack of bids for it with just the one at £13k.
Another great auction video Mitch 👍. My picks are the Clio Williams and the Mini Cooper ❤, mind you, the Herald was very nice too. Bloody hell, that Jaaag was a bargain!
Cheers mate! I loved that Clio Williams too, real cracking hot hatch 😎
Another great video Mitch, the cavalier and escort si where the two bargains of the day for me like
Both cheap classics for sure!
Great video Mitch,I bought the cavalier after looking at it on Thursday well pleased with it and a good price.
Congratulations! I’m glad your happy with your purchase, was a very clean example 👍🏻
that sunbeam is a real beauty
That consul is gorgeous I own a 1958 highline consul myself
Would have taken a chance on the old SL,especially with that reg plate.love the vlogs, keep them coming mate
Glad you like the videos mate, plenty more to come 😁
Somehow the youtube matrix decided to work properly. I've watched a couple of your videos now, absolutely enjoying the classic auction vids - perfect balance of car detail and the prices. I am tempted to try an auction now, where as I was put off by horror stories of extra hidden costs etc before. I understand the 'provisional' means the reserve wasn't met, I expect some haggling after the fact finalises the sale. I'd love a classic rwd estate, just got to clear my 8 cars and 5 bikes first /o\
EDIT: 16:38 The classic Mini doesn't have a timing belt, its a chain, a very small chain.
I’m glad the algorithm is working well and you are enjoying the videos! Yes your correct, if a vehicle sells provisional then they will talk to buyer and vendor to find a happy medium 👍🏻 Thank you for watching!
18:54 is that bloke is frozen mid walk!
Good video
Mitch I Iove the way you talk about the car and switch over to how much it sold for 👌👌👌
Thank you! I’m glad you like the format of these videos 😎
@@Mk2Mitch am enjoying your format .. it’s the best 👍
16:36, minis only ever had a timing chain, very rare to change them
25:33,the truimph herald was one of the last cars to have a separate chassis, ie you could lift the body off + still drive it around [ish]. we had one at college, ideal training car...
24:34, my wife had a black one, fantastic car, but rotted through in 4 yrs, her feet were getting wet, + it filled the fusebox with water, so it had to go. the alloy wheels [15 inch RS soft-lines] were kept, + are still on my sons destroyed 08fiesta diesel [it makes him drive carefully]
Mk2 xr2 ❤
I did like the silver Escort , I see one like that on the way to work some mornings , I think they need saving before they are all gone .
Just noticed that the 1980 Ford Cortina 1.6 GL 4d Saloon sold for £6,540 is now being advertised on Ebay for £10,499.00 - 04/01/24
Yeah but ten bags for a 1600 low to midspec Cortina? He can ask all he likes, but concluding a sale at, or anywhere near that is quite another thing.... I know he's not doing anything illegal at all but I really hope he sits on it for 18months, has to replace the handbrake and clutch - and then gets back just about what he paid for it. I dunno, seeing a 4k margin on a 6k car feels greedy
I just love that you spotted it!😏
Great to see your on the ball! Lots of these classics get purchased by dealers and stuck on eBay for a lot more than they're worth. They might make a small profit but 10k seems a bit steep to me 😆
Classic cortina, someone got a bargain there,
The XR2 did have x5 registered as ‘G’ reg as the Sun paper was giving away 1 a day as a prize for spot the difference 😊. Book price was £7200 and I sold it to Perrys ☹️😢
Alright dude 👍 it was nice to see you and Lauren at WB and Sons a couple of weeks ago, did you notice the Williams Clio in this auction is the same one that was at WB a couple of months ago!! Thought the Cavalier was at first too but that one's a manual. Great content 👍
Hello mate, great to see you too! I never put two and two together but now noticing the reg of the Clio, it has clicked!
@@Mk2Mitch yeah it was when you mentioned it was a cat D that made me think 🤔 cool car non the less!! Cheers mate 👍
The mk5 cortina was a sister car to my old 1.6GL (OLH 33W) except mine was blue and had the optional head rest pads and a factory vinyl? Roof
12:12 A mate of mine had one of those back in the day. At that time it was the fastest best performing (Stock) hatchback I had ever witnessed. I bet it still feels pretty quick by todays standards.
You have to remember they do not weigh very much.
The price for that Jaguar is just insane ! Unbelievable. As you say, that’s a whole lot of car for virtually nothing.
Noticed a nice Triumph TR7 in the background too.
Great vid Mitch, love to see you in a Tesla 😊
Haha no Tesla for me thank you 🤣
Charcoal Escort was car of the show
Red Fiesta.....Something Mike Brewer would buy😂😂
Honourable mentions.
Saxo
Williams2 Clio
Granada
the mk1 focus is beginning to climb in value.i sold my one owner tddi estate 49k for £2350.also seen a one owner 1.6 lx 26000 miles go for 3600
I can't believe how far you've come with your presenting skills, Mitch. You should be on TV.
Thank you pal! This year has seen a huge improvement with my confidence in front of the camera 👍🏻
Agree with the Jag, do seem value for money, then when your board with it throw the engine in a MX5 😊
Now a jag engine into a mx5 sounds interesting 😎
I am shocked at that Saxo price! I used to have an old 106 and never would have thought a similar car would go for that 😂
Crazy price wasn’t it! I think you’d have a challenge on your hands to find such a low mileage example again 😮
Some real gems went through there this time. The star was the Saxo, worth every penny, that will not be losing value with miles that low. I did like the old Consul and the beige Cortina, I'd have bought both of them, especially the Cortina, that went too low in my opinion.
I agree, saxo was certainly one of a kind!
@@Mk2Mitch Yeah, I'm struggling to believe that it exists!! Happy Christmas to you and Lauren, hope you had a fantastic day
Has the mini got a timing belt??
RS Turbo for me!
Those Escort RSTurbos you show are normally in much nicer condition than that... Funnily enough, i was writing this as the auction happened and I heard you mention its estimate was 10 to 12 - and then it went for 8.6 and even that I think wss a good price for it.
Although someone might agree "it would make a good project car", hmm, I'm not sure - i think for one of those, you want an obviously scruffy one and pay nothing for it. Otherwise, I think I'd rather buy one ready to go for 14 as you could spend 500 hours on that red one to do it properly and find nearly as much to do as a "proper project" - but having spent over 9k on it including fees, you could find yourself chomping through most, if not all, of that 5k margin and STILL not have as nice a one that's been beautifully looked after...that was ready to go at 14😎
I somewhat agree with you but the prices of these Escort RS Turbos keep going up and I think if you put some money and hours into this red one it could be a clean example in the future! 👍🏻
them min`s dont have timing belt`s it had push rods may have had a new fan belt nice to see the rs turbo coming down in price
Yeah the XR2’s are starting to go for silly prices! Especially bearing in mind that they were the best selling model in the range at one time and so still quite a few around. But as always - it’s worth as much as someone’s willing to pay!
I was going to pop down as I’m local gutted now! We could have had a cuppa and a chat! That escort r/s was for sale on market place for £18000
You’ll have to pop down to the next one mate!
@@Mk2Mitch let me know if your going then buddy! 👍🏻
Got a nice vectra in great condition for sale ! How old does it have to be to be classed as a classic?
Most auctions will take cars older than 15 years! It would be worth giving them a email to get a quote and to see if your car would be entered into a classic auction sale 👍🏻
How’s your mk1 fiesta coming on ?????? I see no vids
The Mk1 fiesta is my dads, unfortunately no progress recently 👍🏻
Great video, the Xr2 that sold for £2150, £1500 in fees was that correct?
It was sold provisional, so they would’ve agreed on a price after the auction. I’m unsure on the price but I found the sold for price after fees 👍🏻
Cortina is a bargain. I remember, maybe 15 years ago, maybe even less, there were just about always a few low mileage ones for sale at any given time, usually about £1500-2000 and when at the time a decent MK2 Escort was £7000+ the Cortinas always looked liked amazing value!!! And they still do.
This might be a myth but years ago somebody told me these late Cortinas were made in Germany. Is there any truth in this? They always seemed to be less rusty than other similar cars from that time.
That xr2 is in a dealers for 20k,bit of a mark up from not reaching its 13k reserve.....
wow that’s crazy! You often see vehicles up for crazy money after they’ve been in an auction 👍🏻
The Escort is the Shape that nobody cares about, the final shape before the focus. Only the RS2000 in that shape is desirable.
There were some XR3i's in that shape too but even they are not that desirable.. They might make 5-6K if they are in mint condition and low miles though. RS2000 in same condition would make 10-12K
Even if you don’t need to have an MOT,I would still get an MOT for safety peace of mind🙏🙏🇬🇧🇬🇧
I agree, great to see older cars have MOT! Give you more peace of mind when buying from a auction too 👍🏻
You could daily that cortina for 10 years . And fix it at home . Try buying or doing that with a modern car for that money.
I couldn’t agree more!
Good video, pity about the quality of the cars in it…… some dogs!
mk3 rs has been bodged, v8 jaguar probably a nikasil engine...but yes you get a lot for £800 odd. lol, £18k for a mk2 xr2....ummm no! that's concours money, that xr2 was no where near concours.
anyway, what's really shocking is the price some of these sellers are asking, herald makes £4k & does not sell???? lol...smh!
best buy of the day, i would say the green beetle.
That XR2i will not make much. It has not standard indicator glass , non standard petrol cap, Wrong wheels and it's a 1.8. 16v Which are less desirable (No more power) and don't sound as good and the 1.6 8v. Casing Point .. The RS Turbo is only available in 1.6 8v too... And there we go.. 8:03 Told ya.
Ford going lower than expected could prices be starting to drop
Possibly! Or could be because the auction was in December?!
@@Mk2Mitch classic prices seem to be dropping or at least cars aren't selling as much
All struggling to make the money! Not like a few years back.
Could be a sign of the times or just because it was in December? 🤔
Cheap Cortina
