- On March 16, 1968, Robert F. Kennedy announced he was running for president during a speech in the Senate caucus room. Kennedy was running to become the Democratic nominee, challenging the incumbent president, Lyndon B. Johnson, who announced later that month that he would not seek reelection.

There's a plaque on the door outside this room with all three Kennedys who served in the Senate.
It's wonderful to hear a sane, gracious announcement. Politicians don't speak like this anymore.
His son speaks like this.
Ted Kennedy ruled the Senate.
@@ryanetbainter No, he does not
@@missizaskun he certainly speaks better than Biden and Trump
@@missizaskun - RFK Jr. is a FOOL and would be wise to withdraw from the race pronto.
One of the great men of my lifetime. An unspeakable loss that is felt to this day. I was only 9 in 1968. I remember that era very well. Rest in peace Senator Robert F. Kennedy.
Same here, Thomas. RFK died right after my 10th birthday. It was inconceivable that another Kennedy brother could be assassinated and die only two months after MLK, and when the loss of JFK was still very raw in many people's minds (including my family's). All three men gave so much hope and meant so much to so many people.
RFK's death happened at the very end of my 4th-grade school year. I was fortunate to have a teacher (and parents, too) who insisted her students closely follow, understand, and discuss current events every day. So I was keenly aware of the all the major news events that school year including civil rights, the MLK assassination, the Vietnam War and the Tet Offensive, the anti-war protests, the Pueblo incident, LBJ's decision not to run for re-election, Bobby Kennedy's campaign and the other candidates for the 1968 presidency.
Please give us the full hour broadcast which includes Sen. McCarthy’s response. This is an historic treasure ehich must never be lost or forgotten. Also, I would like to see the CBS Reports profile on RFK on TH-cam. It was originally aired in June 1967.
As a 30 year old trying to understand how we got here: please.

A true American hero. I can’t bear to watch this. He was a great man and would have been a great president.
This is one of the sadest things I've ever seen
GOD BLESS HIM AND HIS FAMILY!
ethel kennedy is 96 years old now.
What might have been.
The path he warned about is the path we ended up taking as a country, and look at us now.
Now we have the opportunity to fight for our country, five for our democracy the way that Bobby envisioned fighting. Kamala Harris is fighting for us and for the United States just as she has fought many battles as a prosecutor, Attorney General, and vice president.
@@lindaincolorado2646 Pretty sure he’d be appalled by a party handpicking its nominee without a primary election and then claiming to be defending democracy.

I'm Republican So What. I don't like the way Bobby Kennedy Sr was treated then. And I don't like the way Bobby Kennedy Jr is treated now
Yes
Americans being open minded and seeing what RFK Jr. has to say will win him the election. We just need people to see Trump for his failed promises and slanderous attacks against opponents characters rather than attacks against the structure that has been draining the US people of their funds.
How Bobby Kennedy Sr was treated then? He was assassinated!
I couldn’t agree more.
RFK Jr has brought that onto himself.
The eloquence of running with hope & civility are dearly missed.
Kamala Harris embodies kaw and demicracy, community and family, she is grace under fire, but never backs down from a fight.
I'd forgotten how young he was at the time of this announcement. A stunning contrast between the two aged men we have to choose between these days.
You could vote for his son
I saw his daughters speak at an event for their father several years ago. You can still the trauma of their father’s death, as well as their brothers’ deaths etched across their faces. They live with it everyday.
Very interesting. Thank You CBS.
Love Robert Kennedy , a True Legend ❤ Always
Elvis Presley did a song 1968 "IF I CAN DREAM" for Bobby and DR Martin Luther King "You have just witnessed a devastated Elvis singing out his soul to honor his assassinated friends, Dr. Martin Luther King, and Senator Bobby Kennedy who was also a fierce fighter for human rights and equality. Watch the video "Elvis Presley and the Black Community" and that will give you an good idea of how Elvis fought his heart out for the innocent downtrodden.. He grew up dirt poor and hung out with African Americans who loved him as much as he loved them. He was a force for good, and it hurts to see him called a racist. He was a courageous fighter all of this life. I love that man. listen to that song. Thank you!
Thanks I just listened to the song by Elvis never knew about it

He’s talking about jobs & education, not loan forgiveness & handouts. What a novel approach.
Ok but it’s not 1968 anymore. So much has changed and prices have been gouged a thousand fold. Were he here today he’d be in full support of loan forgiveness and free schooling.
Astonished by so many historical parallels of the conditions prompting the candidacy of both RFK Sr. and Jr.
Delightful to see RFK Jr sitting there listening to to his dad. He listened well.

RFK Jr is a sad disappointment to the Kennedy family.
RFK Jr. and today’s youth carrying the torch of our parent’s era into a delayed brilliant future. 🇺🇸
RFK Jr. has stated that he does not want to fund Ukraine, and he has many controversial and conspiracies viewpoints. I do not believe he is a good Candidate, all I believe is that he will split the votes for Biden, benefiting Trump. RFK Jr’s family members have told him not to run, and they endorsed Biden (who in no means is perfect, yet still is a decent moral man).
@@UnitedStates17 Are you implying RFK Jr. is immoral because he doesn’t want to fund Ukraine? What are his other “controversial” views?
Biden is by no means a moral man. Harris called him a racist during the democratic primaries before she got selected as his VP. His bigotry was known to the party, yet he was chosen to be the face of the progressive, liberal movement. Not to mention he’s been caught sniffing children on camera multiple times…
@@UnitedStates17Joe Biden may have been a decent, moral man but now he cannot fork a light in americas future any longer as he is but a shell of the man who existed. RFK Jr is far from perfect but HE is a decent, moral man… HE is the man you say you seek. Biden, as sad as it is, is just a smoke mirror and a figure head but is in no way the person running your beautiful country.
@@UnitedStates17 Don't believe the traditional media. They distort his views. He makes decisions based on moral principles and independent research, not what a particular group think (i.e. the left or right). This is the type of leader we need to bring the country together.
@@UnitedStates17 The American people have the capacity to break the two party prison. There's strength in numbers. People will vote for those who inspire them. Not for who they think has a better chance at winning. So far, RFK Jr is the only candidate out there speaking to many Americans, addressing the issues they care about, and hoping to bring about unity among all. We are broken and divided. He's the only one addressing that and hoping to heal that.

One is NOT the same as the other
Love him, perhaps even more than his brother, although both are heroes of mine. When JFK was killed I was a teenager in my native Denmark, my family and friends did what people did in the US, spend that awful weekend glued to the TV. When RFK was killed I was an au pair in Westport Ct. it was my day off, I got up late when down to the kitchen, my au pair mother was there she said "you won't believe what an awful morning it has been, Kennedy have been shot". I had been out late the night before (I was 23) and thought what is she talking about, he was shot 5 years ago. Then the awful truth hit me. Kennedy was still alive, but of course it was just a matter of time. The next night I had a date with someone I had been dating, I was in Westport Ct. he worked in New York, we were to double date with my Swedish girl friend. Her date, my girl friend and I went to the train station to pick up my date. When he got off the train it was obvious he had a few too many. We went to the local bar, and then later to a party. Years later I reflected on this curious kind of behavior, and then it hit me, that coming just a few months after the assassination of Martin Luther King, it was just too much for our 22 and 23 year old, so we pushed it aside. As Tom Hayden said, "we became a generation of what might have been".
Just reading the date of this speech, my cousin was killed in Vietnam the day before - he was 19. I remember all too well the evening he was assassinated. I never understood how this could happen, sadly I do now. Don't be fooled - RFK Jr. IS NOT THE MAN HIS FATHER WAS.
How so? He literally has the exact same views, ideals, and policies of his father and uncle...
RFKJr is and has very many of his Fathers beliefs and policies
This is so prophetic! I wonder what this country would be like today if he had been elected president. I wish he had gotten the chance. I also would like to see his son, RFK Jr, be given a chance.

Just like his brother Jack, RFK died at the hands of an assassin. One can only wonder what Bobby's presidency would've been like.
This speech takes on a whole new meaning since Biden dropped out of the race. RFK is right. Historically, sometimes the certainty of a nominee doesn't really happen until the actual convention. However, waiting as long as Biden did to drop out of the race only did his party a disservice. I applaud LBJ for having the fortitude to know when it was the right time to step aside.
He would have made a fine President.

If the Kennedy brothers were alive to witness the Supreme Court's recent actions, particularly the presidential immunity decision, they'd be sickened and immensely alarmed. The court transformed the office of President into a kingship for 1 man's benefit. Two-thirds of the court are bestowing upon Trump all ammunition required to lead as a Fascist despot.
