Why? She created all the problems she got a dog that she wasn't equipped for. Malinois are for experienced owners. I have a high drive German Shepherd perfect obedience perfect manners I can take her anywhere. She's very protective but completely managed and I trust her implicitly because I raised her. I would not attempt to have a Malinois Malinois because I know I couldn't give it what it needs. And I am 10 times more experience than she is my dog has six Advanced titles as well as a protection title

Even from the prospective of another professional dog trainer, basically the female version of Tom, this is hands down the best explanation I have ever heard of this issue. Tom I continue to watch and often learn a new way of explaining things to my clients. I’m extremely good with dogs but extremely bad with words and this helped immensely! I always wonder why people tell the dog to stay after giving them a sit or down command. The command means just that until released with no other words said. I know distractions make things tougher on dogs which is why you perfect commands in a quiet environment first, then add distractions in that environment and then move to other places to test and reinforce. In the end, people talk too much to the dog!
With my working dog, we have a sit-wait or a sit-stay. When I tell her to wait, that means be alert because I could give you another command shortly. When I tell her to sit stay, that means she can relax and chill. I won't be giving her any commands until I return to heal position and tell her to walk or free her.

This morning your e collar could have saved my dogs life. She is a gsd mal cross who has been training with us since she was eight weeks old. She is now a year and a half. We live near a train station. Normally on the weekends, like this morning, my family walks her off leash with her e collar on. We were walking with her ahead of us letting her sniff. Then she was off running towards a coyote on the train tracks. We recalled her first trying her working level stim on the Tom Davis 280 C collar. Her working level is a 4-6. Then when she blew that off and was still running towards the tracks and the coyote who was walking away from her, I used the boost function on the collar. Which turned the stim up by five. She turned right around and ran right to us without even looking back at the coyote. She then downed on command when she was back with us, no stim needed, and waited for my family to get our heart rates back down. The e collar saves dogs lives. It adds a sense of insurance for the owner as well since I will now trust her even more off leash with the e collar because of how quickly she ran back once she felt her correction. Thank you Tom for making this possible with my dog. I never would have e collar on my dog without watching your videos.
I like this because it focused on follow through but also the importance of the break command which really allows a dog to relax. 4:47...broke a sit.. 5:50... Behavioral issues... 6:08... External problem... 6:30... "The minute (or second) that he broke the sit..." 7:36... Follow through... If you're not going to follow through put him on "break" command...
Took my daily walk today and had a awesome experience. She learned a new trick, to watch me when walking and we were running at one point as she was a happy happy dog. I used to be a runner, and I am going to see how far I can go with it. I really like this guys logo and attitude. Could watch this guys videos all day long. I use a voice, a touch, and reward/practice approach. I am looking for a trainer at this time in my area.

Ugh, the stories I could tell! I have a mastiff x staffy - a gorgeous boy that no one can resist. Yest, while I was in the GPs, a well-meaning woman stayed in her car talking to him until I returned! The day before, he almost broke the car window when ppl (friends!) were patting him through it.
Yes!! No matter how intimidating your dog might be, when you have an amazing looking dog people want to talk To you and pet your dog. I have a male, not as big as your dog, but he is around 100 lb, American bulldog and American Pitbull terrier mix. But he is absolutely stunning in both physique and general appearance. He is absolutely an amazing dog structurally and behaviorally and luckily he is completely friendly but, is sensitive to faces being put into his face. You would not believe how many people will automatically go put their face in his face and baby talk in high pitches and it is all a no good interaction for the dog. People need to stop taking unnecessary chances and just make sure that a dog is okay before you approach them. I would be devastated if somebody else's ignorance caused my dog to make a big mistake like a bite. It would be detrimental to him because he is my service dog. And I don't worry about him "biting", I worry about more that he would give a correction as he would with a disrespectful dog. I use him as a helper dog. So he is not only allowed but encouraged to take a not so well-behaved dog and correct their bad behavior. Of course he's never gone too far but I learned about his face sensitivity when he was nine months old and a teenager that he never met did the high-pitched voice straight to the face and he gave her a correction and put a little hole in her nose.😅 Although everybody understood what happened and nobody was mad she understood where she was wrong but I at that point knew that I had to be diligent in making people respect his boundary. If he would have gone further it would have discounted him as a working dog completely and maybe if he wasn't a self-trained service dog he would have been disqualified. But in his mind he's only doing what's natural to somebody disrespecting his boundaries and not paying attention to the q's that he's giving. Through lots of situations that were supervised diligently and vocally rewarded him often I have been able to desensitize that to a certain level but he still communicates very clearly that he's trying to avoid the face to face interaction although he hasn't tried to correct anybody since that. But I don't want my dog labeled a bad dog because of somebody else being ignorant. But I will say that more often than not, people are very respectful and in general they ask before they just assume that he's okay and safe to pet.
Thank you Tom, my American Pitbull terrier doesn't share that behavior out temperament, but she does break commands, we sometimes overcorrect, and some disobedience does stack. I think that our timing and spatial awareness isn't on par with hers (the pitty), but the greatest struggle is listening engagement when other dogs are present. It's something we're trying to address with the e-collar, but depending on the e-collar for good behavior worries me because I don't know at which point corrections will minimize.

I use to feel bad about ignoring people's direct questions to me when my reactive dog was being reactive now I don't care. Is i see things are going in a reactive direction I just extricate myself without explanation. Hard lesson to learn but have had much more success with my dog now that I do it

I had to body block someone from petting my dog the other day but by putting my self in front of my dog make him understand that I had the situation under control I successfully had a stranger pet him with a calm dog . I was afraid to body block people but by doing it while looking at my dog it didn't appear wrong.
I have a challenge for you...idk if you will see this but I have an 18 month old catahoula and he is deaf...In my opinion the deafness has been the reason for his over the top anxiety issues...om genuinely interested to knownhoe you would approach this situation with this dog....help!!!!!!!
Great video as always but wouldn't you recommend them to also do muzzle training on top of the obedience? From personal experience my German shepherd cross Mallinois is reactive (much better now though) e collar training gives him freedom, prong gives me control on walks and he wears his muzzle outside or if we have visitors which gives me confidence that if for any reason he freaks out he can't do as much damage. Safety for him and others. Any thoughts?

Thanks mate I really learn alot from your videos but I need some advice I have a really aggressive German shepherd rottweiler mix he's okay with me but he won't listen to anyone else and he really pulls on the leash I dislocated my wrist walking him and nothing seems to help I tried three different trainers but they all said he can't be trained and I live in Africa so not possible to bring him to you please give me some advice 😢😢 you are doing an amazing job 😍 thank you for all your efforts 🙏
I know the feeling I have a dashund shepherd mix and he is nearly three years old but has come a long way with behavior since I have been watching Tommy Davis videos I really didn't think I would be able to get passed fear I had because of his size and he knew that but I had to be direct with commands and hold him accountable and he learned and still is some reactive to other dogs and people but I'm confident with more of these amazing training videos he will be better even though he is more attached to my hubby he listens more to me. @@frances8813 thanks, even mine has cooled down a bit since I watched these videos and started holding him accountable but I'm really worried about his leash aggression it's really bad I already dislocated my wrist twice and if he doesn't improve it'll probably happen again he's so reactive on the leash and he's really strong so I can barely hold him anyway and then he wants to lunge at every thing that passes us on the road it's so hard 😭😭
Such a high energy breed. Don't get one of you can't give the dog what it needs. Unfortunately people are matched with the wrong breed for them. You make your life a nd the dogs life a misery when this mismatch happens.
I live in a part of a small city where the number of dogs is really high. We also have a lot of people who foster dogs and you can tell who they are because they correct the dog's behavior and gives them a treat. Then a month or a few months later I see them with another dog. All dogs have to be on leashes per city ordinance and everyone, or almost everyone, picks up their dog's poo. I'm wonder if I'm nit picking when I observe people walking their dogs while on the phone or just walking along and when the dog stops to sniff the grass the owner just pulls on the dogs leash until the dog is dragged away and the owner doesn't say one word to the dog. It's been some time since I've had a dog because I was working a lot and I had a cat, see below, but I even spoke to my cat as part of his training and I used to joke that I was the crazy cat lady. Is this common, I've seen people who use hand signals but that is not what I am seeing. Overall the dogs seem to be well cared for but I believe that animals are a lot smarter than we think. They have even done experiments with crows and found that crows problem solve if they want to eat what is in a closed box and will even create tools to solve a problem. I found it fascinating and I used my rescued cat Tig from kittenhood to prove that with speech and positive reinforcement he would understood a lot of human language but he displayed a great deal of intelligence before I started training him. Tig was a really intelligent cat and by the time I stopped working and had time to adopt a dog as "company" for Tig my Vet said it would be very hard on Tig who was really sensitive and intelligent and even believed I was his Mother - that was over 7 years ago. He'd nibble on my nose when he was a kitten which is what kittens do with their mothers and when I first rescued him he couldn't sleep unless he was with me in my bed. He'd had been alone with me for so long that he would be heartbroken and she'd seen cats and dogs go downhill physically when they feel they've been replaced no matter how much attention is shared between the two. Tig was just 15 when I had to put him down a few months ago due to pancreatitis that didn't respond to treatment and by the time he reached that age he knew at least 100 words. I had been training him since he rescued himself by walking into my life at 20 or so weeks of age. I want to adopt a dog because I know I will never love another cat as much as I loved Tig and that if the next cat wasn't as smart as Tig I would be constantly comparing them and I believe it unfair to any animal to not be loved wholeheartedly. Someone suggested that I adopt a K9 because they are very intelligent and there are many coming in from all over the world. I saw on one site that they had dogs coming in from the United Arab Emirates. I guess they are equally hard on their animals as they are on their human population. I apologize for being all over the place but I can't stand the silence in my house and I find myself leaving the house just to escape the emptiness.
Do you work with service dogs? I have a shelter foster who is naturally amazingly non-reactive (even with confronted by aggressive dogs) and handler focused. I am still learning, and would like to find a trainer with more experience that can task train him. I also do not know how to find anyone who needs a service animal. While I eventually want to train shelter dogs professionally for service, he has such an amazing temperament that I know he could train very quickly for service with a professional trainer.

Both my rotties are opposites lol. Walter LOVES people and i always tell them to just move slow and talk to him when ya come up to let him sniff ya, BUT he is not good with other dogs. Getting better, but still a work in progress. Florence on the other hand was abused as a puppy before we got her so she does NOT like any non family members but will accept other dogs. She has gotten better also, but it takes a LONG time and its hard to find time to get her out where she can be in a vicinity of people. Both of them from day 1 were always good with our daughter and grand kids though. From the very first time, even florence was awesome with them.
I’ve got a 12 month old Mal, do dog sports, bulk training with daily, we also have a walked who is a studying vet who walks him 3 days a week. He was attacked a couple of months back by a mastiff out of nowhere, which in turn has no caused problems (which I’m working through)! Long story short! There is a guy who lives around the corner from us who claims he has worked with them for years, blah, blah, blah. The other day he was told to stay away from him! So what’s he do? Decides to approach after a few more warnings, pays then off keeps advancing until the point my dog goes off at him, because he can also sense the dog walker is tense as and stressing out because he didn’t listen and then Ranger switches into protection mode goes him. Then he goes it’s not his fault but the dogs, and blames us say thing he doesn’t get enough metal simulation at home and accuses us of licking him away for hours on end. Safe to say I’m going to ask my dog walker where he lives and have a chat because that’s not ok.
My dog has fear aggression which we are working on. My biggest concern is that the dog is very aggressive towards my husband. They can't be in the same room together. My husband wants to work on their relationship. How can he when the dog crosses the threshold everytime he enters the room
Any advice on what to do when the prong collar is making my dog overstimulated ?? When she gets corrections for being reactive to other dogs on leash she gets so over stimulated she redirects on me. So now I haven’t been using the prong collar and it’s been back to square one. She walks loose leash until she sees a dog then it’s “game time”
Hey Tom! About the place command- my GSD knows it and we have a raised dog bed. Issue is the distance from the front door. The dog bed is too far away and out of sight of the front door so I feel like that makes it worse for my dog when he can't see the guests. We've been teaching a different place, we call it "spot" and its about 5 feet from the door. Is that too close? Should I keep the same word, "place" or is it okay to use "spot"?
Good morning , my dog is around 5 months old and she started biting her tail till it bleeds . We took her to alot of vets and they said it was because of anxiety but they didnt give us any pills . We tried to get her to stop it but nothing do and everytime we say her tail is healed and she got better , she goes back to it . Her reactions arent as aggressive as they used to be , but the process of screaming at her is so unhealthy but she doesnt stop biting her tail until we do . I dont want to do it in such a troubling manner . Is there any suggestions to make her stop this please ?
What accessories do you add to your 280C? Having trouble with consistency, which I believe my dogs coat is the issue. He won't react much at all until level 10-12 (if at all ever) so i'm wondering what could cause going higher than the typical 3-6 we see in videos.

Because she's overweight? Overweight people can still exercise (I regularly hike with my dog). Also, there are plenty of tools that give a dog exercise without requiring their human to be a distance runner (like a good ol' chuck-it).
Dilution: can this negative effect also be achieved when multiple members of a family all tell a pup to “place”…I feel direction, voice inflection (tone) and accountability should come from one person. I find that others contribute “noise” and then we lack clarity. Thoughts?
If we would not try to 'domesticate' to ourr rules, dogs would be easer to live with. Everytime i realize, animals need to be free living spirits, not being submissive to humans. Dogs learn to be a dog from their mother with their siblings and other family members and dogs of the pack. We can not be or do what a dog IS in nature.😢 People want to be in power and control over everyone and everything. The most easy dogs are street dogs. Yearslong experience! Wonderful dogs to watch in the streets. Of course, once in a while dogs and people get in conflict. Like humans towards humans to.
It's absolutely not my job to avoid getting attacked by a dog. It's more important that the dog owner doesn't just get a bloody collar on their doorstep.
It’s crazy people can acquire a Malinois so easily. Unfortunately many people don’t have the commitment level to own aggressive dogs or severely reactive dogs. You got to be a dictator and have a serious culture shift. That being said I totally am that head on a swivel dog owner. My reactive dog is calm on walks and I’m the reactive human scanning now for stupid people and off leash dogs. It sucks. It would be nice if other people were responsible and considerate so we didn’t have to be like that. Gotta be prepared for stupid people always unfortunately.
Please teach her how to deliver a proper correction with the leash!!! Until she understands that, she will struggle. Precisely timed proper corrections are the basis of communication between owner and dog. Otherwise all she is doing is nagging him.

If he would have gone further it would have discounted him as a working dog completely and maybe if he wasn't a self-trained service dog he would have been disqualified. But in his mind he's only doing what's natural to somebody disrespecting his boundaries and not paying attention to the q's that he's giving. Through lots of situations that were supervised diligently and vocally rewarded him often I have been able to desensitize that to a certain level but he still communicates very clearly that he's trying to avoid the face to face interaction although he hasn't tried to correct anybody since that. But I don't want my dog labeled a bad dog because of somebody else being ignorant. But I will say that more often than not, people are very respectful and in general they ask before they just assume that he's okay and safe to pet.

Thank you Tom, my American Pitbull terrier doesn't share that behavior out temperament, but she does break commands, we sometimes overcorrect, and some disobedience does stack. I think that our timing and spatial awareness isn't on par with hers (the pitty), but the greatest struggle is listening engagement when other dogs are present. It's something we're trying to address with the e-collar, but depending on the e-collar for good behavior worries me because I don't know at which point corrections will minimize.

I use to feel bad about ignoring people's direct questions to me when my reactive dog was being reactive now I don't care. Is i see things are going in a reactive direction I just extricate myself without explanation. Hard lesson to learn but have had much more success with my dog now that I do it

I had to body block someone from petting my dog the other day but by putting my self in front of my dog make him understand that I had the situation under control I successfully had a stranger pet him with a calm dog . I was afraid to body block people but by doing it while looking at my dog it didn't appear wrong.
I have a challenge for you...idk if you will see this but I have an 18 month old catahoula and he is deaf...In my opinion the deafness has been the reason for his over the top anxiety issues...om genuinely interested to knownhoe you would approach this situation with this dog....help!!!!!!!

Great video as always but wouldn't you recommend them to also do muzzle training on top of the obedience? From personal experience my German shepherd cross Mallinois is reactive (much better now though) e collar training gives him freedom, prong gives me control on walks and he wears his muzzle outside or if we have visitors which gives me confidence that if for any reason he freaks out he can't do as much damage. Safety for him and others.

I know the feeling I have a dashund shepherd mix and he is nearly three years old but has come a long way with behavior since I have been watching Tommy Davis videos I really didn't think I would be able to get passed fear I had because of his size and he knew that but I had to be direct with commands and hold him accountable and he learned and still is some reactive to other dogs and people but I'm confident with more of these amazing training videos he will be better even though he is more attached to my hubby he listens more to me. @@frances8813 thanks, even mine has cooled down a bit since I watched these videos and started holding him accountable but I'm really worried about his leash aggression it's really bad I already dislocated my wrist twice and if he doesn't improve it'll probably happen again he's so reactive on the leash and he's really strong so I can barely hold him anyway and then he wants to lunge at every thing that passes us on the road it's so hard 😭😭

I live in a part of a small city where the number of dogs is really high. We also have a lot of people who foster dogs and you can tell who they are because they correct the dog's behavior and gives them a treat. Then a month or a few months later I see them with another dog. All dogs have to be on leashes per city ordinance and everyone, or almost everyone, picks up their dog's poo. I'm wonder if I'm nit picking when I observe people walking their dogs while on the phone or just walking along and when the dog stops to sniff the grass the owner just pulls on the dogs leash until the dog is dragged away and the owner doesn't say one word to the dog. It's been some time since I've had a dog because I was working a lot and I had a cat, see below, but I even spoke to my cat as part of his training and I used to joke that I was the crazy cat lady.
Is this common, I've seen people who use hand signals but that is not what I am seeing. Overall the dogs seem to be well cared for but I believe that animals are a lot smarter than we think. They have even done experiments with crows and found that crows problem solve if they want to eat what is in a closed box and will even create tools to solve a problem. I found it fascinating and I used my rescued cat Tig from kittenhood to prove that with speech and positive reinforcement he would understood a lot of human language but he displayed a great deal of intelligence before I started training him.
Tig was a really intelligent cat and by the time I stopped working and had time to adopt a dog as "company" for Tig my Vet said it would be very hard on Tig who was really sensitive and intelligent and even believed I was his Mother - that was over 7 years ago. He'd nibble on my nose when he was a kitten which is what kittens do with their mothers and when I first rescued him he couldn't sleep unless he was with me in my bed. He'd had been alone with me for so long that he would be heartbroken and she'd seen cats and dogs go downhill physically when they feel they've been replaced no matter how much attention is shared between the two. Tig was just 15 when I had to put him down a few months ago due to pancreatitis that didn't respond to treatment and by the time he reached that age he knew at least 100 words. I had been training him since he rescued himself by walking into my life at 20 or so weeks of age. I want to adopt a dog because I know I will never love another cat as much as I loved Tig and that if the next cat wasn't as smart as Tig I would be constantly comparing them and I believe it unfair to any animal to not be loved wholeheartedly. Someone suggested that I adopt a K9 because they are very intelligent and there are many coming in from all over the world. I saw on one site that they had dogs coming in from the United Arab Emirates. I guess they are equally hard on their animals as they are on their human population. I apologize for being all over the place but I can't stand the silence in my house and I find myself leaving the house just to escape the emptiness.

Do you work with service dogs? I have a shelter foster who is naturally amazingly non-reactive (even with confronted by aggressive dogs) and handler focused. I am still learning, and would like to find a trainer with more experience that can task train him. I also do not know how to find anyone who needs a service animal. While I eventually want to train shelter dogs professionally for service, he has such an amazing temperament that I know he could train very quickly for service with a professional trainer.

Both my rotties are opposites lol. Walter LOVES people and i always tell them to just move slow and talk to him when ya come up to let him sniff ya, BUT he is not good with other dogs. Getting better, but still a work in progress. Florence on the other hand was abused as a puppy before we got her so she does NOT like any non family members but will accept other dogs. She has gotten better also, but it takes a LONG time and its hard to find time to get her out where she can be in a vicinity of people. Both of them from day 1 were always good with our daughter and grand kids though. From the very first time, even florence was awesome with them.
I’ve got a 12 month old Mal, do dog sports, bulk training with daily, we also have a walked who is a studying vet who walks him 3 days a week.
He was attacked a couple of months back by a mastiff out of nowhere, which in turn has no caused problems (which I’m working through)!
Long story short! There is a guy who lives around the corner from us who claims he has worked with them for years, blah, blah, blah.
The other day he was told to stay away from him! So what’s he do?
Decides to approach after a few more warnings, pays then off keeps advancing until the point my dog goes off at him, because he can also sense the dog walker is tense as and stressing out because he didn’t listen and then Ranger switches into protection mode goes him.
Then he goes it’s not his fault but the dogs, and blames us say thing he doesn’t get enough metal simulation at home and accuses us of licking him away for hours on end.
Safe to say I’m going to ask my dog walker where he lives and have a chat because that’s not ok.

Any advice on what to do when the prong collar is making my dog overstimulated ?? When she gets corrections for being reactive to other dogs on leash she gets so over stimulated she redirects on me. So now I haven’t been using the prong collar and it’s been back to square one. She walks loose leash until she sees a dog then it’s “game time”

Hey Tom! About the place command- my GSD knows it and we have a raised dog bed. Issue is the distance from the front door.
The dog bed is too far away and out of sight of the front door so I feel like that makes it worse for my dog when he can't see the guests. We've been teaching a different place, we call it "spot" and its about 5 feet from the door. Is that too close? Should I keep the same word, "place" or is it okay to use "spot"?
Good morning , my dog is around 5 months old and she started biting her tail till it bleeds . We took her to alot of vets and they said it was because of anxiety but they didnt give us any pills . We tried to get her to stop it but nothing do and everytime we say her tail is healed and she got better , she goes back to it . Her reactions arent as aggressive as they used to be , but the process of screaming at her is so unhealthy but she doesnt stop biting her tail until we do . I dont want to do it in such a troubling manner . Is there any suggestions to make her stop this please ?

What accessories do you add to your 280C? Having trouble with consistency, which I believe my dogs coat is the issue. He won't react much at all until level 10-12 (if at all ever) so i'm wondering what could cause going higher than the typical 3-6 we see in videos.

A Malinois needs an extraordinary amount of exercise, and it's clear this owner is incapable of that.
Because she's overweight? Overweight people can still exercise (I regularly hike with my dog). Also, there are plenty of tools that give a dog exercise without requiring their human to be a distance runner (like a good ol' chuck-it).

It’s crazy people can acquire a Malinois so easily. Unfortunately many people don’t have the commitment level to own aggressive dogs or severely reactive dogs. You got to be a dictator and have a serious culture shift.
That being said I totally am that head on a swivel dog owner. My reactive dog is calm on walks and I’m the reactive human scanning now for stupid people and off leash dogs. It sucks. It would be nice if other people were responsible and considerate so we didn’t have to be like that. Gotta be prepared for stupid people always unfortunately.

Please teach her how to deliver a proper correction with the leash!!! Until she understands that, she will struggle. Precisely timed proper corrections are the basis of communication between owner and dog. Otherwise all she is doing is nagging him.
