And make sure that you get the coated wire that matches the color of your hat. Cut the wire larger than the brimming and hide the excess in the weaving. That’ll make it easier to shape it in whatever design you are feeling that day lol
You might be scared it looks white at first but it will dry clear enough. And if you have a light color hat like the one in the video it won't show up even with an extra coat.
Thank you! I'm trying to rescue an old paper hat, and didn't know what to do beyond starching. The starch+heat method will (I hope) save my hat in time for my summer trip.
Try running under hot water until totally soaked. Then gently stretch out wrinkles. Lay flat on a folded towel on the floor while smoothing out any remaining wrinkles. Then leave to dry. Oh, I flipped that hat inside out first.
it's a pretty cheap Amazon iron- not too hot and definitely didn't do any damage to the carpet! that would have been a nightmare, but I do recommend placing a towel down or doing this on an ironing board (I just didn't have one)
if you have access to cornstarch, this link was very helpful! It says 1 1/2 tablespoons of cornstarch and 2 cups of water mixed together. Here you go :) brendid.com/3-ways-make-non-toxic-spray-starch/
Thank you for the turtorial, may i ask you what to do with the middle part of the hat? because mine is wrinkle really bad even when i put it on my head, it doesn't look nice anymore, i tried to place it in some object like stuff animal so the middle part but didnt work out.. appreciate if you can share it too!
I had this problem too! I stuffed it full of underwear, rolled up socks, and tried to let it organically loosen itself up when I packed it in suitcases or stored it. It works so-so honestly :/ Give it a try and use your blow dryer to "warm it up". Some heat may make a difference
I know! I thought redoing the process a couple of times would help. I tried a new technique with some wire and sewing and it was more of what I'd want for my hats
You didn’t stiffen the crown of the hat?? I’d think using a styrofoam head or plastic bowl would work as a form- the crown of hat looks bad but rim looks better
I know, much floppier than I was hoping! I thought repeating the process a couple of times would make it hold better but I tried a new technique with wire that is a bit better
Jeez for heavens sake just go to the local Joanne Fabrics and get some very thin wire and thread your hat brims. Then you can shape the hat for each individual mood you are in every time lol. And the starch won’t flake off on your outfit or your skin.
Like with shoes haha! They have hat stretchers you can buy on Amazon or the good old hair dryer. Spray with water to dampen, set your blow dryer to high heat and stretch it as much as you can. Hopefully that works out! Sometimes you just have to break it in
1:40 is when the process begins

Just found my summer hat unpacking from another trip lol. Still relevant video 3yrs later. Thanks for the tips.
It still looks floppy to me
😅
Slightly floppy hats are in fashion. I personally prefer a nice stiff hat so I'm going to keep liking for a sewing or wire tutorial
I agree. Props to our presenter for effort.
Exactly
Just as floppy as before. We wanted a stiff brim.
And make sure that you get the coated wire that matches the color of your hat. Cut the wire larger than the brimming and hide the excess in the weaving. That’ll make it easier to shape it in whatever design you are feeling that day lol
I like the method using a mixture of 1 part Elmer's glue and 3 parts water. Brush it on and let it completely dry on a flat surface
that is a great recommendation. I will be trying!

I hope so as well! I did try a new technique with the hats with some wire and my minimal sewing skills. If your hat is thick enough you could try!

Do you iron the hat to smoothen it out ?
Thank you!, I tried it once and wasn’t disappointed my hat looks new. ❤❤❤❤
Thank you! Saved my favorite beach hat
Shouldn't you lay down a sheet first to keep starch off of the carpet?
Yikes, I was thinking same, but great job otherwise.
And protect the carpet from the iron
Thanks for the tips, young lady. Cheers!
Thanks for this! Super helpful and easy to do. Can't wait to try
Yay!
I just bought a polyester wide brim hat. I wonder if it needs starch---I guess I will see. Thanks for your video!
I cannot believe you are spraying starch and using s hot iron on that carpet.
The iron will not damage the carpet.

I’ve only ever ironed on my carpets 😂
Hiii what alternative do you suggest because I can’t find starch in my local market in malaysia, thank youuu great video💕

You cat get it in supermarket in Malaysia.I always get in supermarket under Easy On or Kiwi Kleen starch
@@MikoSonya they do have a spray starch in Jaya Grocer supermarkets and Giants here in Malaysia.
But it's still floppy I like it when it sticking out all the way around. What can u do about that?
I'll do my next one on how to get it SUPER stiff- more in-depth process
Use a heavy hold starch and more than one application and it should do the trick
@@LauraMerchant thank u soo much love 💘

Can you do the same thing to a wool felt wide brimmed floppy hat? Or does the wool get destroyed by the moisture?
I would definitely not apply heat from an iron to a wool hat (it sounds so cute though, I must see)
Hello, love your hat! What is the brand?
“… super stiff hat!” While holding sides up off her face with both hands.
Ok.
Thank you.. my postman delivered a damaged Melissa Odabash today.
How is the starch removed from a Dobbs Genuine Shantung Panama hat so it can be rolled and folded?
great question! I've never tried to do this but I can do some research- this is an interesting topic to cover
Still a bit too floppy. Lil bit.
I know! I thought redoing the process a couple of times would help. I tried a new technique with some wire and sewing and it was more of what I'd want for my hats

Thank you so much for this tip!!
Would a flat iron. Work?
I see potential! It’s just heat!
What kind of hat is this?
Jeez for heavens sake just go to the local Joanne Fabrics and get some very thin wire and thread your hat brims. Then you can shape the hat for each individual mood you are in every time lol. And the starch won’t flake off on your outfit or your skin.
Do you know how to stretch a straw hat so that the crown fits a bigger head

ما هو المحلول المستعمل؟
😍😍😍 Thanks 💞
so welcome!
My floppy hat is 98% plastic, will this still work?
I wouldn’t try the heat. Try just starch! Let me know the results 😬
She doesn't even lay down a towel over the damn carpet. She must not own it.
I didn’t, I didn’t even think of a towel 😩 but I’d never forget it in my new house 😂
Agree. It must be a rental and she has no education.
Thank you! You look gorgeous by the way😘❤️
thank you so much!!!
It’s definitely still floppy.
omg are you serious??? that is floppy as it was before the starching!
Where are you from
I'm from Houston, TX! All black racially, ethnic background my mom's side of the family is Honduran :)
Still looks the same!😂😂😂
Why did you call your hat wealthy 😭
sometimes I just be saying anything LOL
Thanks alot
you're welcome!
🌞🌞🌞 thank you
No. It's too floppy.
I thought so too! Try sewing wire into the brim- much better stiffness!
It sure is floppy 🧐👎🇬🇧
Lol
Girl bye
Thanks sista ...@ vonbrinkleybrand
