This video is but a small look into how Smash portrayals of characters can leave out so much in order to fit a representative in the game succinctly. On a positive note, I do appreciate a good Shulk fan-cam.
After finishing Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive edition, Shulk's voice actor sounds WAY better in his actually game. Take the "I'm really feeling it!" quote for an example. The comparison is just... sad.
Not to mention that... (SPOILER FOR XENOBLADE CHRONICLES. IT'S A GOOD GAME, GO PLAY IT!) ...Most of his bloodlust was likely fueled alot by Zanza himself residing in Shulk's body. No wonder he became more chill once Zanza left his lifeless body!
Sakurai: Heh, wouldn't it be cool to have Shulk have some of his one liners and one of his BFF's one liners as a reference? That'll make the Xenoblade fans riot. Normies: SIDE TAUNT x 10000
Fun fact, in Japanese the taunt it "That doesn't sound good." - something Shulk would say in response to a quest. And yes it got old fast. It's also why Shulk does somewhat of a talking animation when he taunts.
Everyone forgets that Shulk is easily one of the most violent protagonists in recent history. He outclassses literally every other character and villain in his game through sheer force of action. "In the absence of passion, vitriol is the only acceptable substitute." - SsethTseentach
The reason why Shulk is happier and goofier in Smash, is because he got lots of threapy for his various traumas gained from the war, and ha a good support network. Smash helps him get used to post war life, by giving him an outlet for fun, non lethal fighting, since it would be difficult for him to go back to a simple peaceful life, after becoming such a killing machine.

Shulk in Xenoblade: War-torn badass dead-set on avenging his people and ending the millenial war between Bionis and Mechonis. Shulk in Smash: Hello m8s time for an mlg shulk montage innit 69 lol nice
I mean, sort of. It is more like he is 'bipolar' in the actual game than anything, so when he gets angry, he goes all out. On the flip side, you definitely see that calmer and more light-hearted side of him a lot throughout the game.
Pomeranian Warfare how is he bipolar.... you wouldn’t be clam if you seen your childhood friend getting killed in front of you or seeing the future of people dying that could happen at any moment ?
@@brazyfever787 Mate, why do you think I put the quotations around the word? I am not saying that he literally has some sort of bipolar disorder -- not even close. It was just used figuratively to suggest that he has a lots of ups and downs in his mood throughout the game.
My favorite part of this honestly is the one out of context line at prison island where Shulk tells a one armed Metal Face that he’ll know (the) pain and suffering (of the emperor and Fiora). So incredibly violent. 💀
The immediate cut from happy Shulk in Smash and "This is a good result" to Shulk screaming "I'LL KILL YOU" over the angriest sounding OST in Xenoblade Chronicles is a perfect display of the tonal dissonance between the two games.
I like the sheer contrast of how someone can see him as a jolly optimist who had a grand destiny thrust upon him by a magic sword and is a bit of a jokester when in his actual game he's a complete badass who has seen some serious crap and experienced a lot of pain and tragedy.
Admittedly it's kinda unfair to judge Rex based on Shulk, because Shulk is a great character with a phenomenal voice actor. As for Shulk in Smash it really is hard to portray the many aspects of Shulk in a few lines... so yeah, taking the meme route is definitely much easier lol
Honestly i feel Rex is a great protagonist, even compared to Shulk, but his Voice Acting is so fucking terrible it kills his entire character, he also has some of the cheesiest lines in the whole franchise, but otherwise? Fucking adore his character arc and how he interacts with the rest of the party
Actually it can't cut Bionis intelligent people, so it can cut mekons and animals of bionis, but that specific sword can cut Smash characters, becouse they aren't of Bionis. Other thing will be another Xenoblade 1 character or a Shulk ditto (but dittos are strange to explain)

I always wondered why they make him so "happy flower" in smash when in XC its much more serious and mature (and more at the end of the game, when he forgives someone :O)
Just finished Definitive Edition - oh boy what a masterpiece! I played the original Wii version several years ago, but didn't get to finish because it was too difficult for me as a kid. Happy I got to re-experience it now, it's definitely one of the most impressive games I've ever played.
As someone who first knew Shulk from Smash and then just recently played Xenoblade for the first time... LOL YES, I was shook when virgin boy suddenly became a badass
Lmao gotta love how mechanical rhythm plays a full blast until Monado 2, universal understanding that the music in that scene goes unfathomably hard and syncs perfectly.
I like how in the first Xenoblade Shulk was angry and vengeful, then throughout Smash 4, Xeno 2, Future Connected and Smash Ultimate, he got this reputation for being a super chipper guy, but then come Future Redeemed and he's a middle-aged man who looks perpetually tired.
Having played both games extensively, I'd say it's pretty silly to expect a crossover party/fighting game to accurately convey the depth of the protagonist of a 100+ hour JRPG

After finishing Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive edition, Shulk's voice actor sounds WAY better in his actually game. Take the "I'm really feeling it!" quote for an example. The comparison is just... sad.
Aka a solid 5 minutes of the best screams in gaming history.
Much as I enjoy the "super angry and suffering Shulk" jokes, we must remember that Shulk by the end of the game was a lot more chill.
Not to mention that... (SPOILER FOR XENOBLADE CHRONICLES. IT'S A GOOD GAME, GO PLAY IT!)
...Most of his bloodlust was likely fueled alot by Zanza himself residing in Shulk's body.
@@miimiiandco Yeah, it's a real shame the original taunt was so different. It would be my go-to taunt if the animation wasn't so boring!
Thats some news to me! Wouldve been a nice thing to keep, but I'm happy to still take a Reyn reference anyday.
@@miimiiandco “sounds like you’ve got a problem” would be MUCH more funny after you spike them or something
Damn. I never realized how much I needed a montage of Shulk straight up being a badass until now. Thanks for this vid

XC is such a beast. Smash Shulk is basically trying to give everyone a hug.
Doesn't that mean its end-game Shulk?
Oh no, the Smash cast are screwed.
Smash Shulk is a surfer dude. XC Shulk is like a bounty hunter.
@@Twilord_ nah.
Well Shulk is a pretty chill guy if he's not in front of his worst enemies
2:07 "Heropon Ricky on vacation. Hom-hom, do Ricky's job!"
Good to see Shulk “AAAUUUGGHHH” his way through everything.
So basically Adam Howden is a fantastic voice actor
okay but really shulk is actually just a big phat nerd as well. everyone literally talks about him obsessing over parts n shit
Shulk is just neat man,
I'm fine with Shulk being a meme in Smash. My problem is not his funny lines though but his model. It looks so wrong.
the only buff shulk needs is his model
Him and female Pokémon trainer look like frogs
Yeah he looks much better in DE than Smash but that's because they adapted his original design in Smash.
Ikr? On the victory screen he looks so cursed...
His victory screen is the embodiment of DeRp
This is just an Adam howden scream Montage
I see no problems with such a montage
It only occurred to me recently but Shulk in XC1 just outright tries to commit genocide and is willing to do it singlehandedly if he has to
Everyone forgets that Shulk is easily one of the most violent protagonists in recent history. He outclassses literally every other character and villain in his game through sheer force of action.
"In the absence of passion, vitriol is the only acceptable substitute." - SsethTseentach
Ive heatd that "backslash" is the mating call of shulk mains in smash
BACKSLASH
\
As a Xenoblade chronicles expert I can certify that fact.
As someone who hasn't played XC but really liked playing Shulk in Sm4sh, I didn't know he was actually so badass. That's neato.
You should play xenoblade, it's a masterpeice of a game
This was the little push i needed to get into Xenoblade, and after beating both the main game and Future Connected and about to head into the second one, all i can say is thank you
Did you finish 2 in time for 3?
@@KnightGamer724 Yes, however i did not finish Torna in time and i still haven't (almost there though) which is also convenient since my physical copy preorder of 3 got cancelled and i'm trying to find one, so at least i've got some Xenoblade to play while i wait, please don't spoil anything you know i'm trying to head in blind since i couldn't do so for 1 and 2
@@lucasdellamaggiore Oh I won't do that to you. You deserve to have a great expierance with 3. It is fantastic.
@@KnightGamer724 Good to know, i was hoping it is!
@@KnightGamer724 Hey, i'm back, i beat the game on monday and i'm doing the post game. HOLY FUCKING SHIT! "Fantastic" doesn't even begin to describe how fucking GOOD this game is, my new favorite game of all time no doubt!
Shulk in Xenoblade: War-torn badass dead-set on avenging his people and ending the millenial war between Bionis and Mechonis.
Shulk in Smash: Hello m8s time for an mlg shulk montage innit 69 lol nice
The prodigal armor set is so goooooood
Shulk is calmer in smash bros ultimate then he is in xenoblade
Shulk in Smash: This is a good result.
Shulk in Xenoblade: *screams and shouts at machines whilst fighting like a badass*
My favorite part of this honestly is the one out of context line at prison island where Shulk tells a one armed Metal Face that he’ll know (the) pain and suffering (of the emperor and Fiora). So incredibly violent. 💀
Shulk in Smash: Disch ish da Monaddos pouwa
Shulk in Xenoblade: Y'all like war?
The immediate cut from happy Shulk in Smash and "This is a good result" to Shulk screaming "I'LL KILL YOU" over the angriest sounding OST in Xenoblade Chronicles is a perfect display of the tonal dissonance between the two games.
Shulks voice actor in Xenoblade is PERFECT, he captures every emotions and makes the game so much more *alive*
I never released how much Shulk screamed in Xenoblade lol.
Yes same here
Honestly i feel Rex is a great protagonist, even compared to Shulk, but his Voice Acting is so fucking terrible it kills his entire character, he also has some of the cheesiest lines in the whole franchise, but otherwise? Fucking adore his character arc and how he interacts with the rest of the party
Shulk in Smash: I'm really feeling it!
Shulk in Xenoblade: *stabs god to death and restarts a pocket dimension*
Underrated part at 3:56 with Shulk and Melia lol
The 3 clips tell a story
(Around 2:16) Always love how at this point he's straight up got Ultra Instinct...
That's monado speed for you
Xenoblade was before Dragonball Super even began
@@Kladyos and? Did I imply that wasn't the case?
I would just like to inform you that in Smash we are playing a Corpse, wielding a Sword that can't cut people.
It can after a certain story point.
@@rosheafan Not that specific sword, though.
@@rosheafan And even then he never actually kills a person with it
*Your Blade, It Did Not Cut Deep Enough.*
I love how shulk is so cool in custcenes and then you remember the actual fighting...
ok ok i love xenoblade, but THE THUMBNAIL???? GOSH IM OBSESSED WITH DIMITRII AAAA ❤️❤️❤️
And that's why Smash doesn't do him justice, he's not just a meme dude who's "really feeling it"
The only things he's feeling is pain and bloodlust
I know this is old but man I first knew of shulk in smash I didn't like him he seemed eh too me XD just a meme surfer dude....I eventually gave xenoblade a chance expecting. Too dislike it but shulk really was different then what I expected he was cute at first then well damn I just wanna hug him now and melia/dunban
There's such a huge gap in the amount of chill shulk has between him in smash and him in his own games and it's freaking hilarious
I will never stop appreciating Adam Howden's voice acting and this video has all the evidence why
He really mellowed put after he moved out of that 2-person housing complex huh.
He was so overjoyed to get in to smash that he got over his PTSD. Made props Master Hand (or whoever send out invitations).
Everyone: Why isn’t there monado jump in Xenoblade? It’s so cool
Shulk: 2:22
Shulk in Smash: I’m really feeling it!
Shulk in Xenoblade: *screaming, murder, screaming, pain, screaming, suffering, MORE SCREAMING, M O R E M U R D E R*
So, it’s sorta like how in Smash, Captain Falcon is a campy over the top fighter who shouts a lot where as his F zero self is more of a stoic Batman-type figure.
Xenoblade is mostly a revenge story, and that's a nice change of pace from most other JRPGs
If you liked the revenge plot, I highly recommend Tales of Berseria. It's also a blast to play, while also having a great main party.
Smash: Sun, sun sun. I’m having so much fun!
Xeno: He’s the doomslayer’s cousin
It’s crazy to see how strong Shulk got. From that first fight with Metal Face, to his return to fight the Telethia. Kinda crazy.
I always wondered why they make him so "happy flower" in smash when in XC its much more serious and mature (and more at the end of the game, when he forgives someone :O)
I have a theory that Shulk in Smash is him immediately after going to extremely potent anger management and therapy classes.
The “that’s Dunban over there” for some reason made me laugh so hard
alternate title: shulk being a badass for 5 minutes straight
Lmao this is beautiful.
I think Shulk deserves to be a bit silly in Smash after everything he's been through.
Fiora...... She wants his head....
She’s whispered as much to me.....
He went from an angsty college student to a dad. That's quite a big change.
Having played both games extensively, I'd say it's pretty silly to expect a crossover party/fighting game to accurately convey the depth of the protagonist of a 100+ hour JRPG
Yeah but we could have used more of the "I'll kill you !" instead of the "I'm really feeling it."
In smash a memeable force of nature
In xenoblade A FUCKING DEMIGOD POWERHOUSE CAPABLE OF ANYTHING HE PUTS HIS MIND TO
2:54 I love how you cut out the spoiler the game itself just casually drops on you two hours in lol
Shulk was Dimitri before Fire Emblem Three Houses released
