      They knew. They are just stup!d. Just because it is on the beach does not mean the value will rise. The people that buy it are just greedy. The developers don't give a sh!t. You got land, they will build a home. The taxman doesn't care either. You got value, they will collect.

    My Grandpa was born in the 1890s, was a farmer all his life. One year the water in our county was brackish and dangerous to drink because the "lake rolled" or turnover. But my Grandpa said, that's a natural thing and the land does the same. Farmers know about this but not many people do.

    • @kinte1870
      @kinte1870 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Brackish water is not safe to drink. Brackish water is more saltwater than freshwater. That lake must've been close to the sea and got flooded for it to turn Brackish.

    • @susie-ws4ce
      @susie-ws4ce 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No. It's not like a lake turning over. That's due to seasonal temperature changes. Land that's sandy and unconsolidated, shifts and settles with rainfall and gravity and inclines. Looks like this is some sort of delta or alluvial fan. Unconsolidated sediments prone to movement. Nothing cyclical about it. Just REALLY stupid to put building on.

      Per Wikipedia: "Though the Portuguese Bend area had a history of landslides going back 250,000 years and had been officially mapped as a landslide complex before the 1950s, current slippage in the Portuguese Bend area began in 1956, coincident with the construction of a road (the Crenshaw Boulevard extension, south of Crest Road) along the top of the ancient landslide complex.[10] During this construction, excavated sediment was dumped onto the upper slopes of the complex along with hundreds of thousands of gallons of water which lubricated a layer of bentonite clay formed by the subsurface weathering of volcanic rock called tuff. This layer of bentonite slants down to the Pacific Ocean enabling down-slope movement which continues to the present. A 1958 video newsreel was shot of the effects of the movement on the homes in the area. A successful suit was filed by area homeowners in 1961, winning $10 million in compensation against Los Angeles County, the party responsible for the road construction."

    My ex lived up there in the Sixties. This was nothing new even back then. Some people had huge timbers and jacks under their homes, which they would periodically use to re-level their houses. What surprises me, is that anybody could still get a required geological survey to get a building permit approved in recent times, when this problem isn't some new revelation. I just got back from checking out the caldera on the big island and looking at property. The land might be worth $23,000 for an acre but the people who buy in that area build un-permitted houses, yurts, sheds to live in, invest time and money into solar, water catchment ($20,000). They clear some of the land, plant fruit trees etc. When they want to sell, they want $100,000 to $150,000+ or so for a “house” that the government might want you to get rid of. I’m assuming that most of the homes or structures that were taken in 2018 eruption were unpermitted but were sold when an acre was $2000. Still the real estate agents on Hawaii don’t care about you and don’t want to fill you in on the detail on how to read their listing for what are illegitimate buildings. If it were me, it would be hard to do, but I'd pack up what I could, move it out and leave, and let the bank take the property. Move to another state if possible, inland and north, and near a LARGE SOURCE OF FRESH WATER. Mother Nature is NOT going to be good to human beings in the USA or anywhere else around the globe as the climate continues to change. Right now in Central and Southern Europe people are roasting in 100 degree F plus weather, and they're NOT equipped for such weather over there in terms of having central air conditioning, super-insulated buildings, etc. This was reported by BBC online, doesn't seem like it's been reported (yet) in American media - until people start to die.
