    Materials:
    Ideally, you should have all of this before you begin raising amano babies. I have done my best to limit my spending and listing only essential equipment in this list but if money is not an issue, you are welcome to substitute things for better versions, such as plastic containers for glass aquariums.
    =======
    My Refractometer (can calibrate with normal TAP water too): amzn.to/2H4PsiP
    The Saltwater Mix: amzn.to/2IFggXt
    Another Salt mix: amzn.to/3f27NcF
    Phytoplankton(Tetraselmis species) I use: amzn.to/3nsLgZy
    Phytoplankton culturing kit: amzn.to/2IJT4a8
    mini sponge filter: amzn.to/36DzJQr
    **As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
    =======
    Saltwater (35 - 36 ppt/1.026 specific gravity) *you should start with seawater or phytoplankton in some way so that the water already contains some algae for the babies to filter feed on.
    Freshwater growout tank/adult tank
    Pipette and/or turkey baster (1ml minimum)
    Refractometer
    Glass or plastic jar x2
    Small clear cups for transfers
    Flashlight
    Air pump with airline (no airstone needed)
    Sponge filter fit for plastic containers
    [Optional] Phytoplankton or yeast as a supplement diet
    //Temperature: 25-27 Degrees C, or 77-80 degrees F kept usually 25.5C, 78F
    pH: 6.8
    GH: 150ppm, also known as 9 dGH
    **Alkalinity/KH: 0-40ppm, or 0-2.2 dKH
    Ammonia: 0ppm
    Nitrite: 0ppm
    Nitrate: 20-40ppm depending on fertilizing day
    Lights: 6-8 hours a day
    CO2: yes, 2 bps
    *my KH is changes from 0 to 40 ppm. I use UNS controsoil as a substrate, which already buffers my water to a nice 6.8 almost constantly.

    Great video it's super helpful! Is there a point when the babies are likely to survive if they reach it? My berried female dropped all her eggs when moved into the separate tank after 2 had hatched and despite my efforts only 4 hatched. These are now just over a week old and thriving following all these directions. Just want to know if there is a time they are out of danger or if they are at risk until they metamorph? I'm going into hospital for 3 weeks around day 40 so my inexperienced partner will have to take over their care and I want to know if they will be safe.

    So excited to find your video! I began breeding Amanos in May, and successfully morphed about a dozen in the 1st round. I'd love to know how long you've been doing this and what your numbers are like (successfully transformed shrimp). I've tried two rounds since then and belive my algae was too overgrown, so both were pretty unsuccessful (maybe had a total of 8 that lived). About to attempt round 4 with three berried mommas - this time, less light and a sponge filter. I can't believe how little info is out there. Would love to chat about your experiences! 😁

    • @AvatarAquatics
      @AvatarAquatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah! My first batches I ended up with ~8 that morphed, but acclimation to freshwater killed them off using the 1/2 freshwater a day method. I hypothesize that it is the osmotic shock so I use the drip method to drip them into freshwater over the course of 24 hours. I’m currently working on seeing whether crushed fish flakes work(which would be easier to grow vs algae and 24 hr light) + rice bran as well as what salinity would be the best (there is a paper that states 17ppt + those foods are good that is a couple decades old). All this is taking some time because between waiting for my females to be berried and the limitations of my setup, it’s hard to get enough larvae. but a super awesome breeding project nevertheless:)

  • @kuriako6545
    @kuriako6545 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for the great video. I have tried breeding amano shrimps before l have watched this video. Things I Did wrong:
    1. Did drip acclamation. Which took an entire Day or more to actually reach the targeted 24 ppt(I got the required ppt from another video).
    2. Didn't prepare the salt water in advance. So no algae or diatoms. But I have powdered tiny bit of algae wafer and fed them.
    All dead in 1 Day. So what do you think made the most impact. Slow acclamation, ppt or the feed?
    Also I don't have access to sea water. So I have mixed sea salt (proper one) with fresh water. Will the diatoms and algae even grow in there naturally? I don't have access to buy them to start a culture.

    • @AvatarAquatics
      @AvatarAquatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if they die in 1 day, I think water parameters is the problem. They should be fine if no food for 1 day. check your temperature, salinity(35ppt), drop them immediately from freshwater to 35PPT, dont acclimate. then make sure you have some water movement and that the bottom of the tank is clean. The last thing is if you do not have phytoplankton you can buy, ask around your local community if anyone has a saltwater tank. Ask them for some water from their tank and it should have some diatoms/algae for you to grow.

    currently my baby amano shrmips are 4 weeks old, some grow bigger then others. this is my second try. this batch down from thousands to only 50+. here is what I learned so far.
    1. Algae.....make sure you have some algae in the tank when u put them in, because they will need to eat after first few days. My first batch died starving. pure salt water and pure ocean water does not have any algae in them, you have to introduce them. I add spirulina powder third day to get algae going in the tank so my second batch can feed. Do not put too much spirulina power in the water.
    2. Lighting.... light needs to be 24hrs on. I'm using a bottle and was point the light direct from top. with some air bubble I found out some shrimp flow to the surface and can't swim down I have to use dropper to drop water on them to force them down. but after change the light position point to the side, it become much better and not many shrimp come to surface any more.
    3. Airstone..... at first I was adding lots of air to the tank, later found out its bad for shrimp by blowing them up to the surface. if water movement too strong they can't hold on the side to feed.
    so far I have only 50+ shirmp left, about 1 or 2 weeks to go, will see. I have 3rd batch ready soon, female will drop eggs pretty soon i think.

    Yea I've got two females with eggs since I moved them to a much bigger tank and introduced probably some new males. I wish this were easier, I'd love to have a bunch more without paying an arm and a leg for them. The two females have to be close to the end of their lives, I've had them for some time now. I see why they're so expensive.

When I examined the babies just yesterday under the diy microscope, they were orange and moving around fast. Do you have a video somewhere on how you would do water changes?
