    For cleaning the rosin dust from the strings and under them I use a very fine and long haired paint brush. It is not coarse or the type you'd use say to paint your walls, it's soft and fine - the hairs. Also when walking with the violin I have the top plate about 3 - 4 inches from my body, held by the neck, with (obviously) the back facing outwards. I've been doing this for decades and have had no damage to the instrument from the brush. Also, beginners please don't use cleaning liquids like you might use to clean say an electric or even an acoustic guitar. They've got different finishes on them that resist the damage that you'd do to your violin should you use them, window cleaning sprays etc. Hope that helps and that I'm not wrong.

    Second lesson - awesome, I'm looking forward to a bit more advanced lessons. I really liked how you explained tuning in one of your vids and I think I can benefit a lot from watching your videos.

    I don’t have a violin, so all of that information was good to me.

    Hi Simon, do you think it is necessary to re-hair a bow, regularly? My bow is not expansive though ($350), used for a few years.

      It is recommended to rehair every 1-3 years I would say. That is if you play regularly. But depending on the quality of the hair and your playing technique it can be longer. Orchestra players do a rehair every year or even twice. But they get it payed from the orchestra and play a lot! I enjoy a rehair around every 1,5 Years. I barely destroy hairs while playing. But more important as the frequency is the quality of the rehair! Find a good violin maker who uses good hair ad takes his/her time for that.

      @@SimonStreuffViolinEducation Thanks for this detailed info. Will do a good quality hair, or upgrade my bow to a more expansive one after this pandemic. BTW, my previous violin teacher sat on his $2000 bow on his sofa. LOL... that's a really important not to put violin or bow on chair.

    why do you need 4 bows? :)

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Looong story! Two bows are actually not mine. A friend lend me one when my main bow broke. Now I still have that bow and a new main bow plus my first bow ever. Plus a bow a dealer wanted me to test and never wanted it back since (trust me I asked him!). It is kind of overkill, but couldn't give the bows back yet. I only own 2 bows, plus my broken bows stick :(

      and btw, because we are under the video how to not brake your violin: It wasn't my fault my old bow broke. I am very cautious with my stuff and it was my most beloved bow. But one time I sent it to it's maker in a safe package and when it came back to me the bow maker used a different very sloppy packaging and while handling the package the UPS broke the package with the bow. It was a terrible moment!

    About maintenance. My violin is at a luthier because my bridge broke because of a seizure. I'm not in a hurry to get it back because I can't even play it.
