    You're an excellent instructor. This is something new that I will add to my "to do list." I want to play skillfully, but l have lacked the necessary techniques especially with the bow hold, hand movements, and positioning my fingers on the strings to play skillfully. It's coming across exceptional videos like yourself that are an answer to prayers.

    Vibrato sounds amazing when done correctly, and when I try it my vibrato sounds like my violin is having a fit. However, as Rome was not built in a day and I have been playing violin for less than 3 weeks I will return to your video to learn how to do vibrato properly one day and thank you.

    Thank you Simon for your teaching, it is the best one so far I have searched from TH-cam training videos. I am 63-y old and I have learning for over 4 years. My bottleneck is how to play vibrato and my teacher is a graduated student who can not teach me how to do it. It bothers me a lot for I can not play the piece beautifully. In fact, I felt I already made some progress just follow your instructions. It seems like a dream came true to me. I can't wait to practice more. Thank you so much. You are a excellent professor.

      Great to hear you picking up the violin at an age many people are afraid to do so! In fellow colleagues I saw a deficiency in the ability to talk about vibrato in a rational sense too. That is also the reason I started to make videos. I think mypractical approach can help some people to understand that some things are rather simple when understood correctly. Regarding vibrato there are two sides. One side is to understand it correctly, the second side is to do it correctly. Between both sides there can be days, weeks, months or years. It is also important to explore what works best for you, while staying in a practical and healthy hand position. Trying to control the speed of the motion and having a variety of different speeds and amplitudes should always be the goal. I wish you happy practicing! :)

    Wow...most people say start at the note and go below, back to the note and below...never above. So, you have a different take than I have heard before. I have NO doubt in my mind that you know what you are talking about because I have heard you play and you are awesome. :-) So, this "at the note and below" is not exactly a RULE that I need to follow? Can you add any more comments about this? Remember, I still don't do vibrato and have only 2 years with the violin

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a very special point in todays violin teaching and many people disagree with my opinion here. But I had a teacher, who told me to develop a vibrato, which goes around the pitch. That doesn't mean, you should think about that in performance though. This teacher was one of the best violinists I encountered in person, still very underrated. So I trust her opinion. That is one thing. The second thing is, that vibrato on the violin is an imitation of the vibrato of a singer. And good singers seem to go around the pitch aswell, as you can hear in David Finckels slomotion analyse of singers vibrato.
      But after all the vibrato is a very personal matter and for me it is the worst thing to tell a student to NOT do this and NOT do that, but go with the ear and experiment in different directions. Then after that you will develope a vibrato, which fits your hand and your taste. Many people who I hear saying you should vibrate below the pitch have a mediocre vibrato, sound and/or intonation. I wouldn't chose them for role models.
      Still there is nothing wrong with experimenting with those exercises as well and try out, if they work for you.
      For a fact the best vibrato exercises that I know are from books of Simon Fischer and he also sais you should vibrate below the pitch. Still his exercises are good. His playing... again... isn't mine though.
      So my old teacher wins this debate just because she was so awesome violinist, that most people talking about vibrato cannot reach her and have only weak arguments based on semi scientific facts. For example, that the pitch you hear is the one at the top of the vibrato. I find that funny because I can hear the whole vibrato and not only the upper pitch. So I ask myself what people do those scientists test? Are they even musicians...?! Anyway, vibrato is secondary to the bow when it comes to sound! Maybe i will make a controversial video about this topic though :D Thanks man!

    • @danshaskin5543
      @danshaskin5543 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This...For example, that the pitch you hear is the one at the top of the vibrato....is what I have heard from many sources. It is the logic to go to the note and below. I can't disagree....you hear it ALL ( above and below!) Well...those who have ears anyway :-) Ok, so I will discount that logic and do what I think sounds best. Good comments. Thanks!

    --Dear Simon, love your channel and always look forward to new uploads!
    --Considering the subject of vibrato, I have an extremely SPECIFIC question that I have not been able to find an answer to in other videos. The question is, "what are the slowest and fastest speeds of vibrato that are musically usefull?" (obviously, too slow would sound like a sad moan and too fast would sound like an angry hornet.)
    --When I practice vibrato with the metronome, I use each click as a Dotted Half Note and measure the "back" and "forth" of the finger in SIX 8th notes (yes, I know most count in 16ths but this a problem for me).
    --So if you (or I) are playing SIX "back and forths" per click in a piece, what would be the metronome range to work towards?

    Hello Simon, I am returning to violin after a very long time, as I have played cello for quite a long time. Being a string player it helps to understand vibrato, however it is quite different on violin. I am trying to stay away from vibrato as a returning beginner, however I found this video very helpful. I know that my teacher will eventually work with me on this. I prefer arm vibrato, likely because I did this on cello, but I think it works better. I think you mentioned that you use a combination of both? At any rate, thanks for your great videos.

    thanks

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey. That totally depends on the music. Some music needs a more calm and relaxed vibrato while some music benefits from a faster more intense vibrato. I would say, that when you have quarters=70 bpm and vibrate in sixteenth notes, it starts to sound like a vibrato. I will work that out more! Interesting question!

  • @kallolchakraborty919
    @kallolchakraborty919 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    with 1 weak practice i can generate speedy vibrato with lower frequency.bt i can't generate a slower vibrato(like 2 vibrato in a whole beat)and the width is soooo less.what should i do plz tell me ...

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation

      try to relax more and make a bigger movement. Slow vibrato isn't very easy. But a good exercise. In usual concert situations you will not need a slow vibrato.

    I am no where near to doing vibrato yet, but it touches on something I am doing wrong. When I play a sharp for example my sharp is weak compared to natural note. For example if I am doing a scale on an E string, when I play a F# or C#, I sound weak. Also I have to play slightly behind the sharps to sound in tune. Is my problem in my bowing or am I playing to flat with my finger on the string?

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you mean your sharps sound flat? if that is the case you must learn to stretch the fingers more. Keep in mind to have a balanced wrist position, so that you don't strain your tendons! Sometimes the bow can also be the reason for a note sounding flat! Try to stay with your bow in the middle between the fingerboard and the bridge!

    • @amoferia
      @amoferia 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your response. I will pay attention to the things you have suggested here. Why is my "volume" louder on the natural notes but lots softer on sharp notes?

    Bonjour again... I sometimes feel like I'm able to do it, and sometimes i like... forget the move. Isn't it possible to send you an audio to tell us what to improve to be able to vibrate correctly? :)

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought about that. Therefore the late answer. There are two possibilities for now:
      1. You upload a video on TH-cam and send me the link (it can be unlisted if you want). I can then try too figure out, what you can do better. Just a sound file will not help too much, but could work as well! (Soundcloud for example)
      2. You wait a bit until I can give online lessons via Skype or something similar. But for that you will need a decent internet connection I think. Also a 1on1 lesson will not be free. But a idea could be, that we make it an upload on my channel in the end and then I would give you the lesson for free. (Should be with video and audio then.
      Tell me what you think!

      Check if you are actually rolling in the fingertip. Often the fingertip is placed too vertically when a vibrato sounds thin. Try to place the tip of the finger more flat, so that you have more possibility to "wobble"

    That is the first time I ear about the above and below. I have been taught that the human ear hears the higher note. So, if you go above the note, it will sound too sharp but if you go below and on the note, the ear is tricked and it sounds in tune. I do not say you are wrong. I only say you are the first one to say so I see.

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, thats what is commonly taught. I tried to frame it in an not controversial way, that "pracitcing" the vibrato above and below gave "me" better results ;) In fact I learned in University what you say, but some very fine musicians told me about the other way. As I say in the video, David Finckel made a test with speeding down singer voices and analyzing the vibrato that way. He noticed, that they would go around the pitch and not under. In the end it depends on the listener aswell. The musicians who tought me to vibrate over the pitch aswell, heard the "normal" vibrato below the pitch as wobbly and too flat. I encourage everybody to make their own opinion on this, after all its a matter of taste and hearing habits. From an technical standpoint I am totally against just going down from the note, because that will give you an very unsteady movement compared to a round movement around the pitch. It is an BIG topic we are talking about here. Thanks for the question, maybe I will bring it up in a video some times.

    Hi Simon,
    Could you please see this violinist’s vibrato? I’m a beginner learning vibrato and I think her wrist vibrato is weird unlike what I learn. I can do her vibrato style quite well but since I think it’s wrong, I don’t want to use it. Please advise
    Here’s the video:
    th-cam.com/video/XjUWQIpuVb0/w-d-xo.html

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My technical observation is, that her wrist is too flat and her movement is rather inefficient, because she doesn't wiggle from the wrist but more like in the wrist, which does not help the vibrato motion. Technical things aside, her vibrato sounds nice anyways and as long as she feels comfortable she should go that route. For professional classical playing she would have to change some things or adapt her technique to a more efficient one. But for her style it fit's nicely!
