My father served in 1981 as a non-commissioned officer in the 12th mountain division. That was a fusilier company. The recoil of the rifle grenade was around 80 kg. Broken fingers and broken noses were commonplace. Everyone, even smaller and lankier recruits, had to learn to use the infamous rifle grenade effectively in battle. You didn't always have time or space to open the winter trigger and, especially in trenches, you had to use different firing techniques than shown in the video. sometimes you had no choice but to shoot from the shoulder.
That CO's mustache at 4:46 is more than a match for any armor yet invented.

In the canton Aargau we use real carrots instead of Panzerwurfgranaten

Vu que je suis gaucher je chargais le Troq donc pas de croix du bon tireur sur le front, par contre des UG j'en ai tiré des caisses..... en courbe c'etait sympa mais en tendu les 80 kg de recul c'etait viril..... j'aimais bien les exercices de nuit avec les centaines de balles traçantes qui ricochaient sur la neige et dans le ciel.....

pretty good firepower on close range combat if you think - you have a pretty good rate of fire with these Grenades and they were pretty effective (shaped-charge, and the grey "Stahlgranate" -> Steelgrenade/"Splinter" (the one that is rather slim and ripped around the warhead) - the grey ones were the "real" explosive ones.. the orange were blanks/dummies.. the slim ones with white cap were the fog-grenades :)

It was. Thats why the butt is rubber and has collapsible sections.

They are well suited for mountian warfare, light and mobile.
Try to drag a light howitzer to the hill top.
Much cheaper, less training.
They used them for indirect fire, whit apropriate rifle and sight.
Plus on armour top atack is efective even whit such a small projectile

from what i understood every infantry in swiss had 2 rifle grenad
not sure if the was one anti tank but it seem a better capacity than all other country who at best have a single antitank weapon per squad
i know only the france for also using them but never found any documentation on the carry amount
usually there were several RAK teams in each platoon using the Bazooka and then there were the few shooters for rifles grenades which usually were the strongest soldiers since with 90kg/200lb recoil you had to be strong, also each platoon had also commado group with a few
of the ones wiith all above skills plus being excellent in card reading and excelled in all other sports...

I'm sure this has been asked and answered before, possibly by the Bloke - but I can hear orders in Swiss Ger,man in some clips, in Swiss Franch in others... how did this work in real life? Was it a case of first language choice for the NCO concerned or policy choice for the unit or - it just didn't matter too much? EDIT - and in one clip in both languages. How kind.
They usually give their orders in german and then proceed to jokingly say « en français c’est la même chose » (« same thing in french »)
As a NCO in 1980 I had a trilingual troop, luckily I spoke all three so it was not a problem, others less polyglot made with simple translations.
In any case there is constantly some lingua franca.

Every NCO and above should have some proficiency in both german and french military lingo ("zug daher - séction à moi").
Therefore, bilingues are kind of preferred candidates for NCO/officer selection - and because you can also be drafted for higher positions, some of the bilingues choose to fly under the radar (" j'ai rien compris ")

They only seem like that from a distance. The Swiss helmets are wider at the bottom than the stahlhelm from the Germans

Дальше 100 метров довольно проблематично попасть в танк...А учитывая опыт 2 мировой войны...когда пехота убивала ,фауспатронщиков, ...не давая им приблизиться на дистанцию эфективной стрельбы...Но наверное лучше в 60 - х годах небыло😉
For this type of rifle grenade, you can expect decent results up to 70-80m at most.
@@DaletheStgwDude Да...да!Я в курсе дальности...благодаря интернету.Но мысль дать хоть какую - то защиту от танков каждому солдату была заманчивой мечтой!!Хотя кроме быстрого износа автоматов это ничего недало....к сожалению.Между прочим русские тоже помучились с 1914 года по 1942 год со ,ствольными, гранатами...и поняли что вреда от них больше чем пользы!Странно что швейцарцы наступили после русских на эти ,грабли,.Но это их суверенное право!😉🤗

I imagine if the soviets ever did move on Europe and invaded Switzerland there would’ve been a massive amount of casualties for the soviets

@@erics2305 That would be interesting to know exactly what the Soviets planned to do with Switzerland in case of attack in the west. Actually I'm not sure they really planned to conquer the country.
@@debo2128 Yes. In the end, I don't think Switzerland could have resisted the USSR on its own for a very long time, except maybe in the mountains. There were just too many of them. But since the country had a pretty large army compared to its size and a good air force, and it was well-prepared, I hope it would have been possible to be a rather hard part in the front, so to speak.
What's pretty amazing, if you think about it from today's perspective, is that every single house has a bunker in its basement that is designed to withstand a nuclear blast. There's also an air filter, so theoretically the people could have survived a nuclear, chemical or biological attack.

Here is an off the wall comment. Given that there are four official languages in Switzerland in the unlikely event of a war and units have to be merged, how Ould it go with say a unit from the Tecine mixed with one from the north east.
That’s a good question. From my own personal experience, it seems that the Ticinese have a knack of being quite good in both German and French. Comparatively, the French-speaking Swiss that also manage in German don’t feel as common.
Interestingly, a few buddies of mine that served in cross-canton units usually spoke… in English!

On avait une vraie pétoire, nous :-) Pas un jouet en plastique. Et puis on posait notre pétoire pour travailler, le Fass 90 on l'avait en permanence sur le dos, en plus des gilets pare-éclats et de tous le reste. Pas sûr de gagner au change ;-)

Nun ja, das mit dem "nicht mehr wirken" ist so eine Aussage, die immer gefährlich ist. Wenn wir immer vom modernsten und besten Gegner ausgehen, dann ja, hätte ich mit meiner Runkel ein Problem gehabt. Aber auch bei den grossen Manövern hatte ich es meistens mit Spähpanzern, Radschützenpanzern und Luftlangetruppen zu tun. Und da war uns die Gewehrgranate oder die Rakröhre, die wir da hatten und einsetzen konnten, lieber wie der versprochene PAL- Halbzug, der nicht eingetroffen ist. Und wenn ich mir so die Bilder aus dem Bürgerkrieg in Syrien anschaue und wie da die T-72 ihre liebe Mühe gegen RPG-7 Raketen haben, dann ist es wohl wie immer: lieber eine einfache Waffe, die man hat, als ein Laserschwert, dass noch auf dem Wunschzettel steht. Zumindest bei mir hat es, trotz massivem Runkeleinsatz, noch immer für eine Auszeichnung gereicht.
