  • Saundra Mallett, who had recorded unsuccessfully for the label, backed by The Vandellas; she later married and became Saundra Edwards. The new group's first single release was "Put Yourself In My Place", issued in December 1965; early copies credited the record to the Downbeats, but Berry Gordy wanted to use the name Elgins, which had previously been one of the names used by The Temptations. The record rose to no. 4 on the Billboard R&B chart and no. 72 on the Billboard Hot 100, and its B-side, "Darling Baby", also made the Hot 100. Several months later, they issued "Heaven Must Have Sent You", which again reached both the R&B and pop charts, becoming their biggest pop hit. They also released an album, Darling Baby. However, their follow-up single, "I Understand My Man," was less successful, and the group broke up in 1967.

Saundra Edwards and The Elgins - was a Great Group - They Never Got the Super Super Super Fame they really deserved. To me. The Elgins was just a Good as The Supremes. And Saundra Edwards is just a Good as Diana Ross - The Elgins should have gotten the Super Fame as much as All the other groups in Motown. To me Saundra Edwards is a Super Star - a real Super Star. Suuuuper Staaaar

This radio interview most likely took place in the 1990s, when she returned to the recording studio. Saundra Mallett Edwards died in 2002.

I was 18 years old and the very first watch I bought for myself was an “ELGIN” and I was so proud - and it turn out to be the name of a Famous Motown Group. A Group that I think was a SUPER Group - A Group With A Super Lead Singer “Saundra Edwards “. The Elgins - was a True Super Group on the “Motown” Label - and it is all because of Saundra Edwards - the songs - Put Yourself In My Place - Darling Baby ( which is Saundra’s Favorite ) Heaven Must Have Sent You - it’s Been A Long Long Time. The Elgins was ONE of Motown Best Group. And the had some Good Songs to their credit
My Favorite was - Put Yourself In My Place. My second Favorite is: It’s Been A Long Long Time.

I don't understand women like Saundra Mallett. She develops a successful singing career and then suddenly leaves the business entirely. That is totally weird. Gladys Horton, lead singer of the Marvellettes also left the business at the height of the group's career and then expected to be let back in after being away for decades. The way the music business works is that neither Sandra nor Gladys were let back in despite the making of wonderful new recordings. Lesson to be learned.
