I was actually doing a tribute to Jazmine, intentionally attempting her riffs the way that ice skaters attempt risky moves that someone did better before. At the time I didn’t reference her and I didn’t have control over the video title or info but now I regret not asking for that inclusion. I absolutely agree that performing the riffs without acknowledging them seems more like stealing than covering or appreciating.
I worship Jazmine’s vocal ability and I do think I have some of the same mechanics that allow riffing, but without her unteachable gravitas. So I guess this was my attempt to use her riffs as my armor as I put myself out there - I had stage fright and social anxiety and the image and sound of her as a child singing like a fucking goddess inspired me to be my boldest self!

This is tied with Whitney Houston's South Africa performance (can't compare since completely different) as my favorite performance of Home. To me it's more impressive to know that those runs were planned than had they been impromptu. And it's not like the runs were the only beautiful part. Your tone is gorgeous and 2:00-2:20 is brilliant and was completely original. I downloaded the audio and have been listening to this in my car for a couple years on the way to work. Did you break down the riffs the way Natalie Weiss does or do you use a different strategy? I love Jazmine but in my opinion your performance improved upon her interpretation and even with all her talent I don't know if she could do what you have done here. You are both incredibly gifted and brilliant vocalists.
Mate, everyone tries steal other singers riffs, especially Mariah. They just fail. You did a great job and I think it’s a tribute to Jazmin that you did this, because, as you say, she is a goddess! Good job. 😊

If i see one more comment that says he stole the runs I’m reporting y’all because singing varies and i doubt he said in his mind “let me steal these runs”. Most of y’all saying that don’t even know how to read music or are amateurs and coming from me, a 17 year old BLACK girl who can read Music fluently and has several musical accolades, this man didn’t steal her runs and he DID NOT appropriate black culture. Can we please normalize singing songs that are from shows that usually are cast all black cast, but singing them recreationally, this song has my heart, but im scared to just have a belt out in a studio with a piano because people go "i hope thats not in your rep" or "you know you cant go up for that role" like yes brenda I know damn, i just wanna singgggggggg and feeeeeeeelllll

It's not a bad voice but I felt nothing. The trick is to make the runs sound spontaneous and organic - especially if you're going to blatantly lift them from someone else's very popular interpretation.

Why on earth would you put those runs in there…and I’m specifically talking about their placements within the structure of the song and what the lyrics and melody are conveying at said points!!?? They do absolutely nothing to enhance or emphasise the lyrical or melodic content, placed where they are…all they do, and I do mean the one singular thing they do, is let everyone know that you can do runs and trills, but (and I’m truly sorry if this seems unkind, I honestly don’t mean it to be!!) you have and are essentially disregarding the composer’s crafted piece of heaven, to in effect, show off!! That’s disrespectful I believe. You could have done a wonderful intro using a couple of fabulous ornamentation, which wouldn’t have detracted from the song!! It’s patently apparent that you can sing, and then some….now it’s time to REALLY think about what you’re singing (saying) and why….what does it mean to you (the song you’re singing) are you singing from your soul, or just reciting the written melody? These are the things that separate singers from stars. Find the meaning, and express it to the audience…and ESPECIALLY ‘Home’….sad, bittersweet lyrical content, filled with hope!!! Most EVERYONE can relate to those emotions!! Connect with the audience and bring them in….try it…see if you can do it!! Many people have great voices that can run up and down the scale like quicksilver…but do they make you FEEL anything??? THATS the test!! Anyway…just trying to help. 🥰🌟🧡
