I just bought that tool because of your review! My husband says he can put a long handle on it because I can't kneel down as a result of knee replacement! Thankyou for your review! I said hi to my garden, it is asleep under the snow ;)
I like to use a scuffle (?) hoe for standing weeding. I can cover a lot of ground. This hand tool looks great for smaller areas that need to more detailed weeding 🌿
I've been using these for years - my absolute favorite garden hand tool !!!! I also have a long-handled one that works really well !!! I even use it when planting annuals ... a very versatile tool indeed ❤
I love my stirrup hoe and my hand sickle and have been using them for years. Nothing more satisfying that digging those suckers right up! I'm like you, have arthritis in my hands from gardening and we have to do what's best for our longevity of gardening.
Yes, I thought about the hula how while you were working. Looks very cool! Would love you to look into offering/adapting into ergonomic tools. Oh my thumb arthritis!
Oak leafs and hellabore !!! 🤩🤩🤩 Definitely gonna hit Amazon with my Christmas gift cards...that tool looks awesome and I have yet to get myself a hori hori 😜
After I fell in love with my horihori I got this and I love it so much. I also have the long handled one (Niwashi brand) but I actually find the handle too short and I have to bend too much which hurts my back, but I am 5'10.
You're welcome! I needed to bribe myself to get back out in the cold and rain... I had already been out in a clients garden all morning and was losing motivation. Ha!
I think it's going to be an awesome addition. What I love is that it's so different than anything else I have. I'm getting back out there on Sunday... it's supposed to be dry!
I bought one last year and love it! I have back issues and found standing using long handled tools leave me in a lot of pain. Kneeling on my yoga mat and using hand tools has cured that problem
Same! I will opt to get my hands in the soil and enjoy the process fully. I have an injured back and when I need a bit of extra support I just lean over a milk crate, which also turns into a handy seat for a quick rest.
Oh this is genius! I actually just bought another little tool for work... it's a bucket lid that acts as a seat. I'm hoping it helps with back issues when I'm installing containers in my busy season. All that kneeling and bending can get to you and I want to be in the garden as long as possible.
@@HelloGarden But wait, there is more, hah! The milkcrate besides a support and a seat, it is also a good step, but my favorite is that I can throw all my tools, supplies, and kneeling mats in the crate if I'm off to work at someone else's garden or to do a DIY project. The milkcrate is stout and you can throw drills, saws, etc. in it. It's a lovely secret tool. And then when it gets muddy or covered in saw dust, then all you have to do is hose it off and let it dry.
You're totally ahead of me. That things is such a beast. I'm anxious for this downpour to stop so I can get back after it. We're supposed to have sun on Sunday and Monday so I'm getting back out there with my new favorite weapon!
I hope it works as well for you as it has for me! I'm actually excited to get out and do more weeding. We should *finally* have a sun break this weekend. It's been miserably wet lately.
What timing! I've lost my favorite garden tool, the Cobra Head weeding tool. I gave up the search and just purchased a replacement and came across the Japanese Hand Sickle but found some restraint to not purchase it. Thank for you permission, it's now in my cart, hahahaha. Here is one of my game changing tips: use Gorilla Tape on the handle. I too, have hand issues and if any of my tools do not have a grip to mitigate pain, I build in a grip with Gorilla Tape. I've used other tapes as well, but Gorilla seems to last the longest. You can also build in a little bump with foam/cushioned material and custom contour it to your preference and comfort. It only takes a few minutes and is so worth it. I discovered this when buying tools from yard sales that had splintered handles. I taped up any grip areas and was floored at the difference it made. I have to add or replace tape every two to three years depending on how much it was used.
Isn't it so satisfying to clear out a whole swath of weeds? Looks like a great tool. I'd like it with a long handle but totally see how the shorter handle helps get into tight spots under bushes.
The BEST satisfaction. It's like when you're cleaning and you get a good chunk of dust from wiping a baseboard. 😄 I feel like the short handle is amazing for getting under bushes and transplanting/creating furrows... but that long handle. I feel like it could be a back-saver. Might need both. Ha!
I actually bought that tool from your Amazon shop as a gift for my aunt! I wanted to keep it when it arrived because it fits my smaller hands so well! And I need it for exactly what you just did! I also have problems with my hands and wrists. So, I am with you, anything that makes a task easier on me and is kinda fun, I want it. Especially if you recommend it 😊
Oh that's such an awesome gift! I think it would be different if I didn't use my hands so much, but between my job and YT, I definitely notice more aching in my hands at the end of a long garden day. Gotta save those money makers!
Ok I NEED that tool! What a huge time saver! Thank you Kate and Janey! Do you know how much money you’re helping me spend!? All for the love of gardening! BTW, I also found 4 bags of bulbs I forgot to plant! 🤫 Happy Gardening New Year Kate and family! 🎉👩🏻🌾🦋🐝🐞🪴💐🌸
So, this is actually a Japanese weeding hoe, the Japanese (rice) sickle is another fantastic tool that is 'da bomb' for cutting back grasses (look for a wicked curved blade with fine saw-like teeth). However, this tool is my favorite weeder and I have actually worn out TWO of them through the last couple decades! 😂 After resharpening the blade and regrinding the point multiple times, I was due a new one. This year I got the Barebones version which has a very slightly different curved shape on the blade and a slightly longer neck and I think I am going to like it as it is lighter. Keep trying out this tool as it is really my most used hand tool (they also make a long handled version), but I use it less like a scraping blade for moving all the soil as you did. I find it is most effective as a below grade slicer/lever. I have mulch in my beds and try not to mix it into the top soil layer by swinging the tool pointy blade side into the earth at an angle beside a weed and kind of slicing/levering the weed out of the ground. I find that loosens the soil around the tap root for easy removal of the whole thing rather than slicing or scraping the greens off the top. For swaths of small weeds, with little effort I can just loosen the soil beneath the baby weeds and swipe with my hand to gather the weeds without much soil. You can use it to sort of scrape/hoe the entire surface, but watching you made me realize how much more awkward that motion is than how it is actually designed to be used. The genius of the angled offset blade is that it reduces the required effort and improves the ergonomic angle for weeding. I think you will notice less hand fatigue if you work with the angle of the tool, and not against it. Good luck! And may you, too, wear out multiple versions in the coming decades. 💪🏼😆
This comment is GOLD. So much good advice! I agree with your sickle description, but it's what it was called in the description. You are correct that the sickle is more of that moon shape. I bet that toothed one you mentioned is insanely good up against some monster ornamental grasses. Great. Now I need to go shopping again. Also, I totally didn't mention it in the video, but I LOVE that I can smooth back out the soil after I'm done. It's like that crazy finishing touch that makes a bed sing. And I'm absolutely getting to know the angle of the tool and how best to use it. It's almost like it needs to train me... or I need to train my hand. Ha!
@@HelloGarden I also have strong opinions about which specific Japanese rice/grass sickle is the best beast on ornamental grasses. 🤭😆 I did a stint at a Master Gardener demonstration garden filled with grasses and it changed my life. For real. Between the Japanese weeder hoe and the hori hori, I barely use my other tools. I still do, but it's like a 90/10% kind of thing. 😆 It's pretty good for crevasses, too, but part of why I wear mine out is I have a lot of old concrete surfaces and weeds do grow in the cracks. So I also purchased a crack weeding tool. From a similar line, but it has a thin L-shaped curved hook shape in the inside, right angle on the outside and it is PERFECT for running along a crevasse and cleaning it out. Maybe my weeder will last longer this time if it's not continually grinding the cracks on my 70's era concrete pool deck. 🤞🏼 Happy shopping! 🤭
Oh interesting! I'm excited to keep using it and see how it fits into my work around the garden. I'm also working on outfitting a new bucket for working around my space.

I wonder if a knife guard would work on it for storage when it’s in tool bag since so sharp
