Hello I'm from Turlock California. You need to put some ground cover for your trees and then you need to cover them up when it's really cold and then you take off the fabric when the Sun is out and then you put it back on when it gets cold and if it's super cold freezing day and night just keep covered. Check for fertilizing you usually don't feed your plants when it's winter time you let them sleep you feed them when it's Spring and they're on. Just check on The internet and get it verified for your area. Good luck

I remember putting in our washing machine. I never thought I could do even that trivial bit of plumbing. It's odd how despite all the other troubles that have come and gone, these little bits of work end up helping us every day in their little ways. Every little thing we did has added up to make our little house livable. I love seeing the journey you're making - a much harder one - and I know it will become something that fills you with pleasure - because you know how each piece happened and what it was like before you made it.

Oh, boy, what a great job to have done! We often take such things so for granted that we need NOT having a washing machine to see how vital they are for making our lives more livable. I've installed water heaters, electrics, and lots of the other things you've worked on so well. Getting though the job successfully is so rewarding! Doing it yourself -- with whatever help you need from friends -- makes it all the sweeter. Every so often, when my furnace kicks in, I think, 'Ha! I drove hundreds of miles to buy that furnace for a great price, then brought it home, and, with my son, took several long and hard days to install it.' Where I live, just BUYING a furnace is supposed to only be done by the same professionals who are legally the only ones to also be able to do the installation. I spent less than a third of what it would have cost to do things the proper way. We had an inspection done on the furnace this past year, and the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) professional asked my wife who had we hired to do the installation because it had been done so well. My head swelled up quite a bit when I heard that! But the swelling was only temporary; I've made plenty of blunders to keep me humble. Watching your amazing work each week gives me a vicarious glow of pride and contentment at watching someone bring a home back to life. Happy New Year!

For your future projects - Any electrical sockets and even junction boxes should be above the level of water connections / outlets so that should you have a leak it will not affect the electrics and cause a short or at worst a fire.

Hey Maya, love the journey so far! Just wanted to give you a tip on your citrus trees! In the last fall and all through winter if you cover the fenced off areas with a large cloth (we always used burlap) it will create a slightly less harsh micro climate and protect the trees from the frost and chill. Hope this helps! Keep up the excellent work! :)

You can only connect a washing machine to a cold water tap. Unless you have a "Hotill" machine. You connect it with two hoses (cold and hot water). But I saw that you only have one connection hose. Because you have floor heating, the boiler does not have to heat the heating water so high. Max. 50 degrees Celsius is warm enough. Also saves you a lot of gas. 😉 Furthermore, good luck with your further renovations. I keep waiting for them with anticipation.

Maya, for the citrus trees, you can’t have any grass growing around the base of the tree as they LOVE nitrogen and the grass will steal all the nitrogen. You need to remove all the grass for at least a 1m radius and put thick mulch around that area, making sure the mulch doesn’t touch the trunk as it can cause collar rot. Fertiliser alone will not help much, it just encourages the grass to grow thicker and stronger
one less thing to think about i feel you. now with a hopefully fully working batroom it will make life so much easier also much easier to have people stay over

Cleanliness is next to godliness. 3. Everyone makes mistakes; the best of us deal with them immediately. 4. You can simplify all building jobs to connecting one thing to another. If you know what you want to connect, as well as where and how to connect it, then you are capable of doing anything. Good luck with your project!

At this point, & every point along the way, I know myself & it would've taken forever because I would have frozen with panic & imposter syndrome thinking I cannot do all of this, & look at you! You just powered right through & finished that laundry room & I know the feeling because my first thought going off grid is that I really need a laundry & root cellar & bathroom for long winters or inclement weather when I cannot go anywhere! Maybe put a heat sink next to your orange tree in the winter? Like a big plastic barrel painted black and full of water, or even two, just to the north of it? It will soak up sun in the day and block wind and release warm over night. Or a small cinderbrick wall with no mortar and only rebar stakes?

You don't have to run the washing machine on high heat, most modern washing powders work in 30 degree setting , I believe. Happy New Year.
