BBC Radio unveiled a new adaptation of Susan Cooper's classic The Dark is Rising at Christmas 2022 - however, there had been an earlier adaptation in the 1990s. After all seven Narnia Chronicles had been adapted, Cooper's Dark is Rising sequence followed - though in the end, only the first two books saw adaptation. This is the first of these, 'Over Sea, Under Stone' - the 1990s version of the The Dark is Rising will follow soon...

Dear old Ronald Pickup .! One of that generation of Theatre trained actors who
graced our screens / radios from the 70s until the 2000s. We assumed they would always be with us but , alas, that could not be. One by one they have passed on. And can never be replaced ....

Not at all. Over the years I've benefitted from people sharing their old recordings online, I think it's only fair to carry that on...

There will indeed - the sequel to this, 'The Dark is Rising' is coming up, as are plays based on the fantasy novels of Alan Garner amongst others...

You might like the Alan Garner plays on here too - and I can strongly recommend The Giant Under the Snow, especially for Christmas Eve...

And i would love it if you did the northern lights trilogies, just an idea! Or maybe some of the unfortunate events books. Whatever you choose iam sure that i will continue to enjoy them and thanks again for making the end of each of my days better.

I'm very glad you're enjoying them; the good news is that I've already uploaded and scheduled at least one play for every day between now and the end of the year on both channels, with a lot of extra ones for Christmas and Halloween. On this channel there will be a lot of children's book adaptations in December, particularly... The Northern Lights books would of course be perfect for that, however I'm a bit cautious about using them. It's basically impossible to upload any of the BBC Terry Pratchett adaptations, and likewise The Lord of the Rings, so I suspect that I'd be risking a copyright strike if I uploaded any of His Dark Materials... However, I do have a very big archive of recordings so the output ought to keep fresh and interesting for a little while yet...

I have issues with the adaptation (because I'm a purist), but I like the production.

@@2msvalkyrie529 I assumed it was a comment about the fact that this is my second channel of radio programmes. I still find the comment mysterious and nonsensical for a lot of reasons (not least, the content on this channel mostly wouldn't be appropriate to the other one)... but hey ho...

Why do they ALWAYS use plummy voiced , stage school kids in these plays ??
Can they really not find any " normal " kids..??

It seems justified in Nesbit but certainly not in Garner, doesn't it? I think perhaps it's a hangover of the tendency for actors to 'drummed' into RP, and for drama to gravitate toward RP performances... I wonder if Radio was particularly averse to regional accents, either because of a more conservative, middle-class audience, or because of a fear that regional accents would be less accessible to the audience... It's certainly better these days though - this particular series is from almost 30 years ago...

To be fair : I guess back in those days you had to be fairly middle class to afford a Holiday in Cornwall. I'm NOT a class warrior but they must have found this lot
      at Eton...!!

I love listening to English spoken correctly, it imparts a certain atmosphere that fits well with the era of the story.

Don’t underestimate good spoken English for EVERYONE who is learning English. It’s SO much clearer and useful. And how hard to decipher more colloquial and heavily accented English. Actors NEED to speak clearly, to declaim and pace, it’s a craft. Teaching English needs good modelling.
