      Dawn dish soap will also kill fleas and ticks in the lawn.

      Thanks! I was hoping soap would get rid of the grubs.....I wonder if sprinkling laundry soap would also work?

      I’ve already put in flowers and mulch and now grubs in the soil. Can I spray Dawn on top of the mulch.

    No one is supposed to grow lawns anyway...we should all be growing gardens and not lawns.

    • @alecmcclennan
      @alecmcclennan  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is true though, gardens are great. Lawns have a place too but grubs will exist in both. The truthy is that a healthy lawn can tolerate 4-6 grubs per square foot before showing damage. This means that a typical 8000 square foot lawn could have 32,000 grubs in it without showing any damage. So just because you see a few grubs, you don't necessarily need to panic. They're part of nature. If they're more than 4 or 5 per square foot, I'd apply some nematodes quickly!

      Really? I didnt know this (please notice the sarcasm)...even though every single space in the countryside is populated by grass? Anywhere that isnt altered by humans is grassy huh? But no...you MUST be right...lawns arent natural...grass growing everywhere across the globe isnt natural...btw I own a biodiverse smallholding I just thought your comment was funny because all I can see from anywhere where I live is grass...which is field after field of grass (reeeeally big lawns kept nice by sheep and cows) 😂

    There are also June Bug traps you can buy to catch the adults before they lay eggs.

    • @alecmcclennan
      @alecmcclennan  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      alan30189 Yes, but you have to be careful with traps. Many times they'll draw more adults into your yard (with their attractants) than you would have had if you didn't use a trap. We'd rather repel the adults by using natural plant oils occasionally, like neem oil. There are many ways to tackle the issue though and if the traps work for you, that's great. Thanks for sharing.

      Alec McClennan Good point. Maybe put them up in the neighbor's yard. He'll think you're doing him a favor! ;-D
      Just kidding, of course.

      I have a large netted off veg cage to let bees in but keep cabbage whites, escaped sheep, goats, chickens and birds out...however its our 1st season on the land and we didnt know we had leatherjackets...the June bug trap would work for us because no crane flies would be able to get into the veg cage but the ones in there would get caught! I think they mature around the end of august but I have fly traps up already just incase the unusual weather patterns confuse them into maturing faster 😊

    Terrible info. You consider yourself a teacher, and while that's good, what this topic really needs is a doctor/surgeon/grub assassin. How do you kill these damn things when they are killing your trees too. You can't dig them up, and you can't replace them. C'mon man.

    • @alecmcclennan
      @alecmcclennan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment Kean. Doubt grubs are killing your trees unless you are having them eaten by beetles. Nematodes work well on the grubs and neem oil can protect your trees from the beetles. If your trees are dying, I’d look at what factors are making them unhealthy. Planted too deep? Poor soil? Girdling roots? Could be any of a number of things. Good luck!

    • @alecmcclennan

      We do not use it and have not tested extensively but the data we’ve seen show that it can be effective primarily in Japanese beetle grubs but not more destructive chafer ground.

      Hi Gord, numerous studies have shown Nematodes can work and we've verified that in our trials. Need to apply correctly and at the right time in the right conditions.

    I have grubs - which is bad itself. But, I've got a greenway behing my house that is heavily populated with armadillos - which are a much bigger problem than the grubs.
