You guys are really getting the most out of those shark head masks and I love it. Fantastic video all around. But my biggest source of suspicion was Rosie, because I'm used to the "evil players trying to steer the conversation at the 11th hour" strat from my own board gaming crew, so I'm really impressed with Teagan for working it all out!
In case you were wondering about which gives you the better odds. If you have one pair and roll 4 dice to get the repeat, each die gives you a 1 in 6 chance of success. Since each die has a 83% chance of failure (rounded), and you don't care about how many successes you get once you succeed, we work out the chance of failing on all four dice and it is roughly 48%, or 52% success. If you have two pair and roll 2 dice to repeat one of those each die has a 1 in 3 chance of success. Since each die has a 67% chance of failure (rounded), and you don't care about how many successes you get once you succeed, we work out the chance of failing on both dice and it is roughly 44%, or 56% success. It is better to keep the two pair. (But not by much)
You need to correct for the chance of getting three of a kind on four five sided dice (I believe that is the correct conditional probability) However, that is kind of messy as well.
@@57thorns that is absolutely true! They could get 3 different 'same numbers' if they roll 3. The odds of getting 3 of the same on 4 dice is 9.72%, but if we include the number we they already had, we are double counting, as they odds are already in there, so it becomes 8.1% That makes me reverse my original statement as it would make the odds BETTER if they only keep one pair. Well done.
@@rpriske I think you also need to factor out the probability that you get 3 the same on 4 dice but the differing result would match the other pair you already kept. After doing that it should come out to adding 6.6% rather than 8.1%, although this does not affect your conclusion.
Oh so cool! I like this game! I can't wait to see the sophisticated adults from my favourite boardgame channel play it- *sees the intro* Ok, nevermind. I guess I just can't wait to see people from my favourite boardgame channel play it.
53:00 rolling 2 dice to match one of 2 numbers means each has a 1/3 chance of success. By rolling 4 dice to match one number, you have 4 opportunities to get a 1/6 roll. The best outcome would be to keep both pairs and save his item so he could use it to fix the guaranteed dice he already had in case the 2 dice fail sine the pairs are adjacent numbers and the item would work. If keeping a pair of 3s and rolling 4 dice results in 1155 or 1156 or 1166, the roll will fail because the item can't work.
yay i would have made the same choice as teagan! =D i was starting to suspect laurie, because i thought he might have turned after the first blood tests, but then remembered that all the flamethrowers were in phase 3 and he absolutely played hella good there - so it was between rosie and dom for me - and i just believed rosies "test me please" more, because if they had taken her up on that at that point and she was the thing it would have been an instant loss though i dont know why dom didnt play a lower card in that last mission (assuming he put the 2 or 3 in - and if that was a lie, someone else probably would have called him on it) - i guess his hand was too good^^
Although this was a very fun video, I think I like the other The Thing game better. It has much more suspense during the entire game, it's a cool mix of social deduction and action economy game, and the The Thing characters (who can slowly take over everyone) can actually do stuff (which sadly wasn't shown in the original video, as they were only outed on the last turn).
With two pair, there are two rolls that have 2/3 to fail, both has to fail for a total of 4/9 so 5/9 success. (55%) Saving one pair, each roll fails 5/6, (5/6)^4 is about 51% chance to get the third dice. However, there is also a chance to get a new three of a kind but I believe that is less than 5*(1/6^3) or 2%. It is close either way.
When re-rolling 4 dice you have about a 6.6% chance of rolling at least 3 of a kind, without rolling the same number that you saved. Adding that to the chance of getting a 3 of a kind with the numbers you saved, it comes to exactly a 7/12 chance of success. 7/12=21/36 which is slightly better than the 5/9=20/36 chance when re-rolling 4 dice.

Always fun watching your videos. Not sure if you've ever seen it, but on tabletop simulator, I saw someone on TH-cam play a Castlevania board game that seemed really interesting.
Haven’t finished the video yet but saw the original and own the game. Wanted to share this variant to see if it enhances this game or makes it more similar to the newer 2022 board game: “During setup, ignore the Subject Zero rules and instead shuffle the entire Blood Sample deck together (including all three Imitation Cards). Hand one out to each player. The remaining four cards are placed in their normal space on the board. Play proceeds as normal, with only the following change: There is no Assimilation phase when the second and third sectors open up. Instead, any time a team defeats a Thing in combat, the Captain must draw a blood sample card. Thematically, this represents a player taking a big infection risk by coming into close contact with the Thing. It also serves to draw people’s suspicions toward certain players and erode trust in the leadership-“hey, how close did he get to that thing anyway?”-which happens repeatedly throughout the film. Since you need to defeat the Thing four times to escape, all four leftover cards will get used. It also increases the risk of a Thing escaping, since a formerly trustworthy player could get transformed at the very end and slip away under everyone’s noses.”
@@jayjaxx2211 do you have a example of this? When I say shuffle the entire blood sample deck I am referring to a the deck of the game regarding player count so this would be different in their game with a max of 2 things. The example I provided was using a higher count of having a game of 7-8 with 3 things or a way to variant the game and maybe even play with 12. Typically the issue is the things are very very passive but they can get easily caught and players who may follow a verbal restriction rule will sometimes pit fall into claiming cards they played with can make it difficult for things even if their game decided to have that difficulty in the first place. Trying to find the sweet spot in this purely card game as opposed to the more balanced out newer 2022 version.

1:20:00 Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Sam could've burned both flamethrowers "losing" to the Thing and then tied up Fuchs. Sure, it would've outed Sam, but it would also severely sabotage the good team.
To answer the question on whether to roll two dice or four: Rolling to get one number has a 5/6 failure rate. Rolling to get two numbers has a 2/3 failure rate. All you need is one success and you win. So the math becomes: FOUR DICE: (5/6 * 5/6 * 5/6 * 5/6) = 48.2% TWO DICE: (2/3 * 2/3) = 44.4% If you subtract each from 100%, you get a success rate of 51.8% for rolling four dice and 55.6% for rolling two dice. So by a slim margin, the smarter choice is to keep two pair and roll two dice. I honestly didn't expect that.
I KNEW it was Dom the moment he threw a mission and nobody called him on it! "I've not got any +2, so we lose this mission". How did they let him get away with that unchecked?

29:56 No, Rosie -- Keep the 2s and ROLL THE REST!
To answer the question on whether to roll two dice or four:
Rolling to get one number has a 5/6 failure rate. Rolling to get two numbers has a 2/3 failure rate. All you need is one success and you win. So the math becomes:
FOUR DICE: (5/6 * 5/6 * 5/6 * 5/6) = 48.2%
TWO DICE: (2/3 * 2/3) = 44.4%
If you subtract each from 100%, you get a success rate of 51.8% for rolling four dice and 55.6% for rolling two dice. So by a slim margin, the smarter choice is to keep two pair and roll two dice. I honestly didn't expect that.
I KNEW it was Dom the moment he threw a mission and nobody called him on it! "I've not got any +2, so we lose this mission". How did they let him get away with that unchecked?
if you have two pairs, keep them.
Wow I thought Teagan threw the game. Dom had be fooled.
Really want to know what Dom was about to say in response to Rosie's catdog theme at 41:30
We are overdue for Blood on the Clocktower guys tsk tsk
