Classic Sunday Sermon: Does It Matter What You Believe?

  • Bishop Barron is currently in Rome participating in the Synod on Synodality. For the next four weeks, we will be airing a Classic Sermon. Bishop Barron will return with all new sermons (and a new set!) in time for November 19, the Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Friends, a great theme of the Bible is that of God’s chosen people. At the same time, we also see that God’s salvific plan has to do with all of humanity-and indeed with all of creation. God chooses Israel-and the New Israel, the Church-precisely for the sake of the whole world. Remembering this helps us keep the delicate balance between bland spiritual relativism and a dangerous religious tribalism.

I feel like I am in a heavenly seminary course. Bishop Barron has amazing Theology. My Jewish friend who is ultra-conservative does not get this. He can only talk about his own community. The church several blocks from me Is an ultra-conservative separatist Baptist church. No one sees the truth but them. I remember the 70's so well. Humans need to block themselves into boxes to feel safe. The gospel really provides liberation from this.

There's great insight in the final major point BIshop Barron makes, that God's Chosen people are chosen for the purpose of blessing the whole world.
This reading holds special significance for me because it was proclaimed at my Confirmation Mass on October 15, 2005, which was held in the time slot of the Saturday evening Vigil Mass. It's fitting to hear about how God chose us in Confirmation to declare He alone is God by the way we put our faith into action.

At 70 years old, I have lived the “ old tradition “. And I can tell you, it wasn’t fun. Not only was the Mass in a language we couldn’t understand, we were also taught that only Catholics could go to heaven. Everybody else could only get to Limbo and how I wished I could have been in that group.
As a Catholic, in the one and only true Faith, we were to be prepare to be Martyrs. What nightmares I lived of every kind of horrifying death!!
Going to Limbo meant you would be perfectly happy, but you would not see God.
Well, that was a huge plus as far as I was concerned because all the paintings of the Father were pretty terrifying and if God was anything like my father, I would have definitely preferred Limbo.
When Vatican II came about, and we were encouraged to attend a huge Ecumenical service, it was the strangest thing. There we were sitting with Protestants of all sorts. Apparently, they could now enter Heaven.
Who would ever have thought such a thing? It was a shock!! Lol

Genesis is not just myths and legends. To God He knows exactly where He’s headed and intends for us. We are exactly where we His Chosen Flock, in His great power, a mere few days work from Genesis to Revelation. Who is reaching out and who is not? Knowledge without grace faith and humility is vain and venomous serving something else. Just take yourself back to primal times why don’t you. The freaking Church IS NOT WORLDLY!!!
"Now that the man has become like one of us, knowing good and bad, what if he should stretch out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever!"
