Love that you included Jace and talked about self mill potential, haha. Lately I've been running a dredge deck that is hella fun to use with Jace. It's a bunch of self mill (drowned secrets, wall of. Lost thought) with narcomebas, creeping chills and arclight Phoenix, haha. It either tries to win aggro style or self mills and drops jace-- A+ jank.
Modified Dev's Gates just took me 6/0 in the landfall event! I dropped a few from his list and added Corpse Knight and if course I called it Corpse Gate. Didn't even need to attack to win most games. Turns out zombies are lazy.

I agree that Cavalcade will be a staple in the new mono-red, at least for the first few weeks - it's what I've been banking on. Disinformation Campaign/ Surveil is a good call though. Good card and good mechanic that was definitely frozen out by others, but now may very much be it's time.
What are your thoughts on a Jeskai midrange deck utilising Burning Prophet, Kykar and Niv-Mizzet Parun with cards like Light up the Stage and any red cantrips?
Black cards, like Spawn of Mayhem, still suffer from the heavy black mana requirement. In a format that's still going to be featuring 3 color decks to power out the most efficient and powerful cards in the format, double Black cards just don't really have a home. Golos, the new Sad Robot, fits nicely in the Gates deck and can fetch up a 1-of Field of the Dead so I definitely agree with that pushing back up to the top for the first few months of new standard. It's also a fantastic Arena budget deck when many returning or new players are scrambling for a new post-rotation deck. Not that they're really underrated right now, but the color hoser creatures may get better in a world with more decks trying to make it with only 2 colors. Great video Dev.

I don't know how much value these thoughts hold at the end of the day though. For one simple reason, we don't have a clue what Throne will bring, it may change all these perceptions (and probably will).
Yes small teferi completely ruins a very significant aspect of Mtg gameplay and everyone knows it. It’s up to WOTC to ban it but I doubt they will even though it’s probably the most ban worthy card in standard I’ve seen for a long time. More so than rampaging ferocidon. Hell I’d rather have the saheeli combo back and legal than play against 3feri
Tbh, spawn of mayhem is actually pretty good already I believe. I use it in a rakdos aggro deck that was originally based on your small rakdos strategy you had. It just helps to have something that can't be killed by cry and ritual of soot in a deck that is low on the curve with mostly creatures.

Two cards that came to my mind but didn't make your list (sorta) are Doom Whisperer and Sephara, though the decks I have in mind did get prominent mention in the context of your inclusion of Disinformation Campaign and Empyrean Eagle. Dimir is a slow enough deck to exploit Doom Whisperer's insane value and beefiness. And I love the BW fliers build that tops out with at least 2 Sepharas in the main.
I asked this question on your Rotation Proof Gates Video but never really got an answer. How viable do you think the Gates deck is in Paper without a definitive finisher like Scapeshift post rotation? Playing it on Arena is no problem with no Match time limits, auto shuffling, auto generation of tokens etc. Finishing/Winning 2 Games in 50 minutes seems like a near impossible task with that deck as it currently stands. Not to mention losing Game 1 or Game 2 and having to win Game 3 under Time Limit.
I have seen LOTS of Field of the Dead decks that don't play Shapeshift in Arena. They are very effective. Field of the Dead and Elementals with all the land draw package (Temur) is a spicy blend and seems pretty deece.
I play black/blue self mill with doom whisperer, jace, and enhanced surveillance. It does really well right now, and I hope you are right that it gets better after rotation
An ancient rule I have learned is...never try to predict future formats. You don’t know what they are printing in the new set and usually that determines the meta.
haunt of the Hightower, you heard it here first lol, seriously though, I built a vampire deck around it, it is imo better than orzove vamps, it eats simic flash, smashed it's way to mythic. i stand to lose only 10 slots on rotation also. But yeah haunt of the Hightower is an excellent card, I am currently working on a mill deck for next season featuring ashiok and sorin ( sorins really the thing with the haunt, he brings it on turn 3 religiously). Anyways I felt like sharing that, keep up the great work, I think your assessments and content is great!
Mardu Calamity is Quite tidy but i'm still working on the final ratios, just access to mortify is huge. Chandras triumph is excellent removal with or without a chandra also
I'm losing so much out of my Angels and Kitties deck, and that makes me sad... Ajani's Welcome into Bishop of Wings into Resplendent Angel has become my favorite playline lately...
I ran Cavalcade of Calamity with Divine Visitation in a Boros Angels deck, because white has a good selection of pee wee 1 hitters to round out your red list. And say I don't have my angel factory up and running, I need a secondary tool that can really pile on the damage quick. If I DO get my angel wall up, it's usually lights out, with bishop on the field even most board wipes will still trigger their second ability to produce a 1/1 spirit token for every angel that dies and with Divine Visitation that's just another way of saying for every angel that dies another takes it's place. Calamity is just a good early game weapon or late game if I lose Divine Visitation. You talk about life gaining, I kid you not, I had a standoff with an explore package deck that ended with me having 498 life off of 2 bishops and Chandra Acolyte.
Next few lists (I'm guessing) (PER-rotation) > Most disappointing cards that had potential for more. > Cards will be glad are gone after rotation. (POST-Rotation) Throne of Eldraine spoilers + deck techs.
The biggest problem is that the strongest teferi is staying, so instant speed will still be really bad. Btw, i think field of the dead will still be a deck, mostly due to my experiences of how strong the deck is even if you do not draw your scapeshift. My top pick however? NISSA! The bant ramp deck loses very little in rotation, mostly having to replace llanowar with arboral as a turn 1 ramp, so it is very well positioned to be the deck to beat going into week 1
No Arboreal Grazer? I thought the discussion about our lazy dude replacing Llanowar Elves was the most concerning thing about the whole event. Also, Legion's End and Sephara.
Nice list, number one surprised me but I'm going to try brewing around it for sure. I'm enjoying gates decks right now, but find they tend to suffer against superfriends decks, and if planeswalkers are going to get more popular after rotation, can gates hold its own? It's not like we're going to get any new gates-specific stuff going forward. Arboreal Grazer is in my top 10, it's not the most exciting card but neither is Llanowar Elves, one of the most popular cards rotating out and Grazer replaces it. If flyers 'takes off', Grazers is good for blocking until you can play whatever bomb you're ramping towards.
I think Dev is wrong about the best "Field of the Dead" deck. I think that's also Temur Elementals. When nearly half of your Risen Reef triggers also make a 2/2 zombie... well its pretty sick.
@@ActionNerdGo I've tried Dev's Gates + Field deck, it's decent but 4 lands that tap for colourless in a four colour deck can be a little rough. Haven't tried elementals yet, I'll need to get those missing 3 Omnaths.
How are you playing gates against shapeshifter and field of the dead and baby ramp and nexus and pretty much every other deck that goes wayyyy bigger than gates
I think Tamiyo gets better. Less walker removal, great abilities, plus, it's easy to forget that Tamiyo makes thought erasure and campaign do next to nothing.
I think Liliana replaces poppa T fairly easy. Not to mention Ugin is dirt cheap right now, and Ugin is both a card advantage/wincon aswell as an answer to any Nonland permanent that's one or more colors.
I think ravager wurm gets better after rotation too, it's an amazing card but carnage tyrant is just a much better 6 drop. When that rotates however....what 6 drop is the green decks gonna play?

I get about 30 rare wildcards per set, and I AM DAMN TIRED OF HAVING TO TRY TO SPEND THEM ON RARE LANDS. I TRIED FOR THE PAST YEAR FREELY TO COLLECT ALL THE DUAL COLOR RARE LANDS AND IT NEVER HAPPENED. I got about 70% of them completed, and I have to be forced to keep my ass to playing mono colored bullshit Tier 2 decks, Arena is too expensive and they simply don't hand out enough Rare WCs. When each meta deck contains 30 to 45 rare cards in it, it is ridiculous that even spending $100 will get you nowhere on Arena............... I've played the closed beta and open beta for about a year and a half and I'm not happy how every single set I'm behind the curve. Nobody Cares either, MTG players don't say a thing to WOTC about pack costs, or card rewards, or rare WC drop rates, the rewards from most events on arena are in the houses favor or unless your a professional MTG player who's been playing for 20 years. Arena needs to have a monthly sub service and you get to make anything and everything you want, and ima eventually stop trying to grind this game and put my time into other video games where it's not a constant struggle or a plane ass ripoff of a "free 2 play" cash grab greedy microtransaction system hell hole.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Yarok is far better than gates for Field value. It's almost as good as Scapeshift, but grindier rather than getting one or two turn kills.
Saheeli. That card is abusable... it says non-creature... not instant or sorcery... Very easy to work with your Calvalcade too. I think it will be the core of an annoying aggressive deck

When a cat enters play, give your other cats +1/+1 and TailSwish (your opponent becomes so distracted that they miss a turn)

You have a good point. Also arboral is a better blocker both in stats and value.

Jace is good in mill decks, not just self-mill, Psychic Corrosion + ult is 14 cards alone.
BloodyFandango corrosion is rotating
I would have coloured that hole in with felt tip pen tbh its works really well unless the hole is like huge.
I've been playing a jeskai Walker deck with Sharkan deck it's so nasty when it drops and you got a bunch of 3 - 4 mana Walker drops.
I've seen several simic decks that can easily deck themselves. Jace seems good in those.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Yarok is far better than gates for Field value. It's almost as good as Scapeshift, but grindier rather than getting one or two turn kills.

Saheeli. That card is abusable... it says non-creature... not instant or sorcery... Very easy to work with your Calvalcade too. I think it will be the core of an annoying aggressive deck
