The photo/video switch could have been suomething else customizable perhaps. I like being able to quickly switch between photo and video with the quick touch of a customized button with my right shooting hand on the R5. Would’ve loved to see them fix the edge wobble that happens when recording with wide angle lenses and sensor/electronic stabilization. Last but not least, Canon’s prices are atrociously high and they don’t allow third party lenses. Each day i’m more tempted to leave their bodies.
How quick is the transition time from photo to video? My favorite feature on the R5 is INSTANTLY switching photo to video using the M-fn button. Seeing that photo/video switch on the top of the R5 II is disappointing to me, but 8K60 & less rolling shutter makes me happy! Best reviewer ever, you ROCK Chris!!
Hey Chris, fantastic review! Do you have any experience with how battery life compared to original R5? I find my R5 quite poor in battery life compared to my R6 II (I seem to burn through almost twice the batteries at events for example!), I wondered if the new battery might be better in anyway. Also, are you able to confirm what video frame rates are available with older LPe6NH batteries? Some reviewers showed only 30p but no 24/25p available, I wondered if this was still the case with the latest firmwar… a bit of a problem if so as I have loads of old batteries!
13:00 here you can see 2-3 hot/stuck pixels in the boosted picture. I’ve always had problems with this on my Canons. But still no pixel mapping feature! C’mon Canon, it’s 2024. Even 2009 Olympus e-p1 had this.
I played around with the R5ii and R1 ProFusion (photo and video tradeshow in Toronto, Canada). It's probably the only chance I would have to have one in my hand. That viewfinder is massive, compared to my R7. And that eye control AF is very trippy, which I was surprised to see working with me without calibration. I was researching what could filter down to a future R6iii and R7ii, both would be roughly within my budget range. But that battery going to 6P gives me pause.
I've got a pair of Canon EOS 3 film cameras and they have the Eye Control as well. It works well on one of the bodies, but not the other for some reason though.
I do r understand how people are home body’s for one manufacturer or another. They bag on canon not being a fully open mount while ignoring the fact that Sony limits third party lenses to 15fps. Though that isn’t that big a deal when all but their most expensive cameras are slow as molasses on a cold winter day, not shooting more than 10fps in compressed raw. Sony is far more limiting than even low to mid level canon cameras as far as fps, while acting like they’re far superior. And while canon and Sony are battling it out Nikon is quietly catching up as far as autofocus goes, as the z9 and especially z8 are fantastic cameras and bang for the buck. If I weren’t invested in the canon ecosystem currently I may snatch up a z8, or even a z6iii. They are very intriguing cameras that would fit my needs in many ways.
Hah, nice circle argument; does the 15fps (for af-c) matter or doesn't it? : P I dare say that for many scenarios you don't need more than 15fps. So to insinuate that it's the same thing as not allowing third party lenses at all seems a bit of a stretch. Not that most Canon users seem to care. They were happy to wait for the years it took Canon to produce a full frame mirrorless and they are content with the lenses Canon produces. Personally I will not get a "large" camera again, I'm very happy with the A7CII; besides AF and operating speed it's the physical proportions and feel of the thing. Does Canon have something similar yet?
Did you experience better focus tracking in Sony A7R5 after upgrade to FW Ver 3.0 . I get that feeling but need someone to confirm the same observation on his camera.
I don't know why people complain about the 3rd party LP-E6 not working on R5ii, those are from 10+years ago, and if it's still working, probably have degraded performance. Most people should have abundant amount of LP-E6N/NH on hand. 3rd party LP-E6P is available, if anyone willing to Google.
I think I'll be waiting for a Mark 3. I have the Mark 1 almost from launch moving from 5D cameras and I had almost them all. 5D to R5 was huge, R5 1 to II... theres little advantage for what I do and instead the money went on some lenses and a badly needed computer upgrade. Lovely camera just not lovely enough to justify spending the money on when my R5 is still doing more than I need.
Imagine if Canon, for the third party lenses, said this to camera makers of other brands: "Do you guys never use first party lenses?" And this camera introduces DiGiC Accelerator, which is Canon's answer to Sony's AI processors Overal, this is a camera designed for all genres of photography and videography
Unless I missed it you didn’t mention that the very expensive new batteries are required to enable all number of the new functions particularly video and I believe the pre capture. I have yet to be persuaded it should replace my R5!
The cons of R5ii vs R5 are: ISO25k is better on R5, there are reports of bricking below 0f, performance with R5 battery, and R5 is less expensive. The big pros are variable fps, 30fps, clog2, less rolling shutter, and precapture. I would not recommend R5ii if you shoot in extreme cold, and are BIF focussed or Video focussed and can spare a couple of $,000. I am on the fence about keeping R5ii based on cold weather worries - I hope they fix this in firmware update. The iso25k can be improved to negligible with Adobe enhance but its annoying.
Obviously a very good camera, however as I am coping with my 6D Mk2, will have to wait for a lottery win to fund any purchase. Deliberately omitted the cost of RF glass and associated issues.

We got a R5 II review before the RF 35mm 1.4 lens. Canon is scared to lend him the lens since he will expose the terrible distortion and vignette and chromatic aberration and flaring.
Everyone else has already exposed the distortion and slight CA on that lens. Frost hasn’t uploaded the 28-70 f/2.8 either. He may not update his preview videos on those lenses. The 35mm f/1.4 is still a great lens for people who don’t exclusively shoot brick walls. Go out and shoot photos instead of sitting on your couch
It is a super sharp and light lens. What you see in the EVF is what you will get in the end result after correction. Try having a 3 hours session and you will appreciate how light it is for a f1.4 lens. Please look at the real world result instead of test chart 😐
It sounds louder because there is no lens on the camera. Pop a lens on (which is how the camera will be used) and it is much much quieter. I personally think it is quieter than the original R5, although I have only tried the R5II in a shop environment so it's difficult to be certain.
crazy to think that the two batteries inside the pack would cost us barely 40 bucks (good ones) and would come without any 3rd party protection. also a camera that overheats is flawed in my mind, so to ask for that much money for a batterygrip with a fan is very bold.
I have a HUGE Problem Chris! Hey Chris! love the video but I have a huge issue with this video! The comments section. I love your work and look forward to every video you make, but you have the same issue every photography TH-camr has... The comments and followers of your videos are constantly comparing and bashing a brand for something. Your comment section for the last 4 almost 5 years has been full of "Canon Doesn't have 3rd party lenses! and that's why everyone is switching to Sony" and "Canon need to allow 3rd party" "Canon cameras aren't as good as Sony", "Nikon cameras are terrible" and "Sony Cameras Color science". It's the most annoying thing in the world and I have to give you praise because you continue making great videos and doing what you love despite the fact that the comments section sounds like a bunch of 3rd graders talking about are chocolate chip cookies better than Oreos! It's the most ridiculous thing in the world that you can't make a video reviewing a camera or lens without these things constantly being brought up! Then there's people constantly talking about features they'll only use maybe once in a group photography outing just to show off so others can see what their cameras can do, when those people lack the creativity to actually come up with anything useful for other photographers! Pre-Capture, Frames per second, etc... are all buzzwords for what used to be the megapixels wars and if you dSLR shot video! Now, everyone is an expert on which log footage is the best, despite the fact that they themselves don't have even a TH-cam channel showcasing their video work. it's really sad that the photography and videography community is still this toxic! we literally have the best cameras in the history of photography right now at our figure tips and have the maturity of a 5 year old regarding brands!
And for those who are going to comment about FPS, DR,3rd party lenses, etc... here's something to think about. 1. if you've every shot sports/events (I have) 8 FPS was more than enough and you'd still end up going through too many of the same images to care! 2. DR is the best it's ever been! but with any stacked sensor from any major brand DR is going to suffer because it's a stacked sensor! the only exception to this at this point is RED and ARRI cameras and if you can afford a $35,000-$90,000 camera, you probably wouldn't be making comments on TH-cam! 3. Canon has the most 3rd party lenses... It's called an adapter! use it and be quiet! 4. Global shutter is a buzz word and has been around for years! Canon had a global shutter camera in 2016 the C700 GS edition and it had the same issues Sony is having today with the a9III! the only Company to have solved this issue thus far is RED cameras and that camera starts at $35,000. 5. Go take pictures and watch videos peacefully! don't start issues with me in the comments section! No one wants those problems. lol 😂
Canon bodies feel great except for the placement of the wheel at the top. I have to adjust my grip to comfortably rotate it. It'd be perfect if it was in front.
nah canon's top dial is the best thing ever in terms of camera ergonomics imo. i found it much easier to access compared to the front dials from sony or lumix bodies
Got to test one a week ago compared to my Z9. It's a great camera , but I was sure the AF would be leaps and bounds better , but from my experince at least , it was very close , maybe even hardly noticeable . It was crossfit gathering, Both cameras had very similar keeper rate , and what confuses the Z9 like colorful wights , confused the R5 II just the same , I took both with 50 1.2 of each brand to keep it as close as possible. Just as we have reached Image quality plato , I think we have for AF as well. BTW , Nikon's 50 1.2 has far far better build quality than the canon IMO , no wonder why it's so huge.
that will always be the case regarding your comment on the lens. Nikon lens are optically top notch but some people wonder why they are bigger and heavier. They are bigger and heavier because Nikon corrects lens breathing optically amongst other corrections, which obviously ends up with a final bigger and longer optical formula. Sony for example does correction for lens breathing digitally and thats why they manage smaller lens.
The ridiculous price of the P battery and grip(s) and lack of 3rd party lenses is a major negative for me, if you compare this camera to the Z8 it still behind in many areas. I wont be buying one until they allow 3rd battery and grips to be used

@ER-gn8io I did. I left Canon, and now Sony all the way. And you find it interesting that I call out Canon on their bullshit? If you are a canon user, It should be in your best interest that people do call out bs like that. Say you have spent several hundreds of dollars on R5 m1 batteries, and suddenly they are of no use; that is bad for you. And apparently I was not the only one; do not believe for a second that if Canon did fix the incompatibility issue with a firmware update, was because of themselves. Pretty sure others have complained about it. *But I am very happy to hear they did it. That is a point to Canon.* 👏🏼👏🏼 And side-note, I am equally frustrated about bullshit anti-consumer strategies from Sony too. Mostly the limit of no teleconverters or >15 fps framerates with non-Sony lenses. And I do not even have Sony gear that can go faster than 10 fps. Still, a bullshit restriction. Being loyal to a brand does not mean blind acceptance. It means also calling them out when they do wrong against you.
Hopefully Canon will leave their power switches under the right index finger. This makes me want to re-explore the idea of the R. Canon's handling really suits me, but they made a lot of silly mistakes. All we ever needed was a mirrorless 5D classic.

It is interesting having only recently visiting Wales from Australia that I now recognise some of the scenes used!!!
It hurt watching you try to hit the buffer with the mechanical shutter 😅😅
Me who just shooting TikTok videos: Yessss!!! I need this kind of camera specs!!!!
I don’t know about you, but I love my R5 Mark II 😊
Yeah me too. As a birder this camera is perfect.
Assignable and instant!
on this camera can be use EF lens with an adopter ???, thanks
Great review thank you, and good to see a bit of Cardiff.
This would be a great replacement for my 5DmkII. Unfortunately, this is little too expensive for a hobby, so I got R8 instead.
The battery life seemed about the same to me, from the extent of my testing
I love my original R5. It’s more than enough for what I do.
Is 15 frames per second not enough for you? Go to 8k 25p, that should be enough.
Hah, nice circle argument; does the 15fps (for af-c) matter or doesn't it? : P
I dare say that for many scenarios you don't need more than 15fps.
Thank for the insights. what is the slot next to the battery for? Your fan from South Africa
When is the RF 28-70 f/2.8 review coming out?
He has one already, what do you mean?
@ziadelgheriany3429 That was a preview, not a full review
Hi Christopher thank you. Please review A1 mark ii as it launches on Nov 19 as well please if possible ❤
Imagine if Canon, for the third party lenses, said this to camera makers of other brands:
"Do you guys never use first party lenses?"
And this camera introduces DiGiC Accelerator, which is Canon's answer to Sony's AI processors
Overal, this is a camera designed for all genres of photography and videography
sony's "ai processor" first implemented in A7RV is used for ai driven autofocus which was already a thing for older canon bodies like r3 and r6ii
Which raw converter do you use?
How’s the battery life?!
Similar to the R5. I shot a wedding yesterday with a battery grip on and used a quarter of the battery after 413 pics.
Unless I missed it you didn’t mention that the very expensive new batteries are required to enable all number of the new functions particularly video and I believe the pre capture. I have yet to be persuaded it should replace my R5!
No, with N/NH batteries there's no limit on photo side.
Pre continuous shooting not available neither is dual shooting ( photo and video) with n/nh batteries
Thank you !
The iso25k can be improved to negligible with Adobe enhance but its annoying.
canon did quite a bit with this one it kinda makes the R1 less interesting in comparison tbh
I love my R5 mII sooooo much. Expansive yes 😂. But i Cam for soooo long time. Thx Canon. 😘
I used this camera and I don’t think it’s much of an upgrade from the original R5. It’s really just an incremental improvement and more of a Mark 1.5.
Well done, thank u
R5 Mark II 👍
Obviously a very good camera, however as I am coping with my 6D Mk2, will have to wait for a lottery win to fund any purchase.
Deliberately omitted the cost of RF glass and associated issues.
I love my Z8 and my lens selection.

You forgot to mention Clog-2
So many people are going to upgrade just for the full sized HDMI port.
@@justinburley8659thank you for pointing this out. People love treating that lens like it’s the worse thing since WWII
It is a super sharp and light lens. What you see in the EVF is what you will get in the end result after correction. Try having a 3 hours session and you will appreciate how light it is for a f1.4 lens. Please look at the real world result instead of test chart 😐
Thanks
Thanks for the support!
I don't understand why the prices in the UK are so expensive? The US prices are much less.
In Deutschland sind die Preise wohl noch höher! Canon R5 Mark II kostet 4799€
Tax
i don't remember it being this loud
It sounds louder because there is no lens on the camera. Pop a lens on (which is how the camera will be used) and it is much much quieter. I personally think it is quieter than the original R5, although I have only tried the R5II in a shop environment so it's difficult to be certain.
crazy to think that the two batteries inside the pack would cost us barely 40 bucks (good ones) and would come without any 3rd party protection. also a camera that overheats is flawed in my mind, so to ask for that much money for a batterygrip with a fan is very bold.
The overheating is criminal.
£4300 for the body and say 3 or 4 lenses close to 10k crazy
R6 MK3 might be more interesting
Dear Santa...
R5 M2 has no IBIS HIGH-RES SHOT, WORST DR THAN R5, NO SHUTTER SYNC LIKE C70 OR R5C AND ODD RESOLUTIONS (NO OPEN GATE.)
8k 60?!!’
Yes. In RAW and in Clog2
12k 20? 18k 15 30K 40! all these numbers mean what? serious question though because I just made it up and can't figure it out!

Nah I’m good with the Z8
Was wollen Sie denn hier! Ob sie zufrieden sind oder nicht interessiert hier kein Aas! Es gibt schon genug die hier ihren Hirnfurz abstellen!
The ridiculous price of the P battery and grip(s) and lack of 3rd party lenses is a major negative for me, if you compare this camera to the Z8 it still behind in many areas. I wont be buying one until they allow 3rd battery and grips to be used
Canon isn't great when it comes to adding features via firmware upgrade. They'd prefer you buy a new camera with those features 😞
Wer ist darin besonders gut? Jetzt sagen sie nicht Sony!
05:49 Register persons has been in Sony cameras long before
And it's in the Canon R3
@@OliverMay1 Has been funny seeing all the YT R3 "pro" users shilling the feature in the R52 as new and useful.
@@cameratool I shoot an R3 and an R5 and I have to admit I am looking longingly at the R5II 🤣
Do I need it?? Not at all? Do I want it?? Yes and no. It likely will replace my R5 at some point, but my R3 is a tank and I prefer the form factor and layout. (I might upgrade to an R1 when it no longer requires me to sell a kidney to pay for one 🤣).
The R5II is a nice upgrade from the mk1 but it can't replace my R3.
This camera is the definition of overkill.
The eye focus is why I would like this camera even though I don't own a Canon. $400 in four years' inflation, no wonder the US voted differently this time.
The battery incompatibility screams Apple-mentality. Jesus christ Canon.... Isnt it enough to skin your users on lenses. Do you have to do it with batteries now too?
Look at Sony: 2 different main battery types! And they are phasing out the old one more and more.
That is a point to Canon.* 👏🏼👏🏼
And side-note, I am equally frustrated about bullshit anti-consumer strategies from Sony too.
4790 euro, no thanks.
Eye-control always worked well for the Mig-29 pilots... never missed a target ;) Ah the battery scam of Canon... as i said, a scam. Mark II not worth the absurd price. Get R3 for less and its better.
Over 4k € for a camera feels like Scam..People buing Cars for that.Nuts
yes and some people buy cars for even a million or more! 🤣
I can't imagine those are very good cars
Why make such great cameras and then give people almost zero lens options. Canon is so out of touch with this it’s almost self harm at this point.
yeah and they're baking noise reduction in raw files on low iso, easy pass for me especially for this price
You forget to mention while comparing with z8 that R5 ii has high rolling shutter issue which is weird z8 has no issue with this ..also DR is also bad compared with old R5 and also Z8...
That's what 'Much faster sensor' means
Z8 has less dynamic range
@@goldenstasgsdepends on shutter used. Both in electronic shutter Z8 has better dynamic range. R5ii in mechanical shutter has better dynamic range.

Nikon made 4ms sensor speed you need in 0.1% super fast shots and that’s why they sacrificed with DR. It’s huge fail for Nikon and they lost battle with Canon again.
I don’t really think it’s much of an upgrade from my awesome Fuji xt10 camera with its amazing 16mp sensor and super accurate auto focus 👌💪🏻📸
What I would t give for Canon to drop a PHOTO ONLY high megapixel body a la what Hasselblad has done…Guess I’ll just keep sticking with my 1DXmkiii…which has never shot one second of video…nor will it ever! 😅
Mirrorless cameras are in fact video cameras; having a photo-only ML camera is nonsense, as what you see in the EVF and in LCD is indeed a video. You can't remove, or not install, video on cameras; video is what they're based on, there's no price saving, size shrinking, weight saving, etc, in not having video. If you don't record videos, just don't, even if your camera allows it.
