Yea, it's important to note that there is actually an interesting amount of buildup between Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Marvel Team-Up to The Ultimates. Pretty much all four Ultimate ongoing titles begin before The Ultimates and eventually intersect with its events in one way or another. Chronologically, Ultimate X-Men is the first time we meet Nick Fury as a S.H.I.E.L.D. spy before he takes Ross' job as Director; He's a Colonal here. We see him again in Ultimate Marvel Team-Up #5, in the second part of the Iron Man story, where he's clearly running things, no longer active in the field, but he's still a Colonel. It's not until #14, when he recruits Black Widow into S.H.I.E.L.D. that he's officially referred to as a General. BUT, we still haven't crossed The Ultimates threshold here because his first appearance in Ultimate Spider-Man, when Green Goblin makes his first comeback, happens before that. In terms of The Ultimates, themselves, not only are Iron Man and Black Widow set up, but most importantly the Hulk's two-part Ultimate Marvel Team-Up appearance in #'s 2 & 3 not only establishes what happened that lead to where we find Bruce at the start of The Ultimates (They even feature a one panel flashback), but also manages to be the foundation Bendis uses to connect Spider-Man and the Hulk way later in Ultimate Origins. Talk about the long game... Anyway, if you reference my timeline that I commented on your Ultimate Human video, you'll see that the first couple'a issues of The Ultimates doesn't just occur before the "World Tour" arc in Ultimate X-Men, but also falls after Ultimate Spider-Man #27, and after Ultimate Marvel Team-Up concluded it's run. Ultimate Spider-Man Super Special #1 acts as an epilogue to Ultimate Marvel Team-Up and to Bendis' first mega-arc of Ultimate Spider-Man, and it features Peter watching the live coverage of Captain America's return, just showing how far into Ultimate Spider-Man The Ultimates takes place.
At this point I feel like the more Smokey reviews the Ultimate Universe the more of a mental breakdown he goes down on. Btw Smokey what are your thoughts on X-Men 97? Personally I adored it and its probably one of the best comic shows/adaptations Ive seen.
As someone who abhors the original 90s cartoon, I really loved '97! I still need to finish it but it's definitely the best animated series Marvel has released since EMH or Spectacular Spider-Man!
Kudos for the Game Changer shoutout!! Ok, so I think that this particular depiction of David may be sounding tones of Spider Jerusalem from Transmetropolitan
Hey Blake, Great video as always. I'm glad that you enjoyed this story as much as you did. This is actually my favorite ultimate X-Men story (granted I haven't read all of them but still). I actually like how it starts off and how it ultimately concludes, both with the fight against Proteus and the conversation between Xavier and Magneto. Keep up the good work.
Loved your video on this volume! Idk why but I always laughed at the part where Xavier reveals he knew that Braddock was possessed by David, for two reasons: 1. The super-posh Betsy Braddock ordered French fries with extra ketchup at their restaurant 2. Betsy’s straight (as far as Charles and I know) but she also kept checking out the waitress whenever she walked by TLDR David’s cover is blown just by his being a teenage boy lol
Yeah Ultimates came out like.. two years into the Ultimate Universe? It was just X-Men and Spider-Man for a bit, like.. a good bit, because all storyarcs were about 6 issues each, or had two story arcs of three issues. I think it was a Bendis thing? Either way, it makes sense that the Ultimates weren't around for the first 12 issues of X-Men, they waited to introduce the Ultimates. There was some.. Ultimate Unlimited or smth book too which was introducing/alluding to the rest of the Ultimate Universe but about 90% of that mag got retconned when the chars were actually used. I know Nick Fury was white, Spider-Man met (Green) Hulk who literally was just 616 Hulk-like, and they also introed Daredevil and Punisher.. but I think both of those were actually kept as-is when used in actual Ultimate stories so that's the 10% that wasn't retconned. I read this stuff more or less as it came out in TPB form, so yeah.
the nick spensor ultimate comics x-men series is honestly my favorite jumping on point because of how much it shakes up the status quo in a post ultimatum world and kitty Pryde is set up to be a better professor x while jean is starting to become more like magneto.
I hate how this video has like 4k views and only 200 likes. It's just one button and yall enjoying this. Yall keep coming back. Anyways loved your video!
I love good slice of life stories and as far as superhero comics go, o one does it better, or did t better than the X-men. My favorite story ever to feature the X-men is X-men annual 96. This was just after the Onslaught storyline and the X-men, X-force and Generation X are all getting together for a day of fun ad a picnic as they deal with the whole situation. It was just a great story of people relating to each other and hanging out and dealing with a traumatic event by just spending time with each other. Also, the epilogue to Kingdom Come where Superman, batman And Wonder Woman are having supper together at Planet Krypton and just talking...It's the Superman/batman/Wonder Woman story I have always wanted. But then, Kingdom Come is my favorite comic book of all time. My second favorite X-men story is Cable issue 20 when it's the end of Legion Quest, just before 1995's big Age of Apocaylpse, and the heroes have failed in their mission to stop Legion from destroying all reality and the X-men spend their moments talking to each other and letting their feelings be known. It's a bit more emotional than the X-men Annual '96 was, but I like that one better because the annual was a bit more fun and also, included a few more characters. As a writer, I like to write epic superhero stories and then turn around and write about two friends working at a gas station or a teenage boy dealing with his friend's death by working at a video store, or a teacher and student helping each other to be better people. Never underestimate the ordinary things in life, for it's in the mundane that we can find the amazing.
I quite liked this story, At least compared to other ultimate stories, There were really only 2 typical ultimate universe moments, Xavier calling his son a pet and blob catfishing beast, It was fairly normal otherwise. Something i do think the ultimate universe did well (At least initially) Was thag events felt like they mattered, Characters could die, The status quo felt less important, Of course this fell apart but for all it's faults the ultimate universe actually felt like it was progressing forward unlike how the 616 universe often is hesitent to move forward
I wasn't expecting you to mention Alex Jones 😂. His reality warping isn't really a result of his fusion as 616 Proteus had telepathy and reality warping.
Well no shit the first 3 volumes of Ultimate X-men takes place before Ultimates. The first debuted in 2001 and the latter in 2002. Doesn’t take a genuis to figure that out.
Ultimate secrets would be nice! I don't really have a reason to recommend this other then Jessica Drew is on the cover and I love her story in the ultimate universe.

Man that final moment between Eric and Charles would be so sweet if I didn’t know how their story ended
You forget the part where ultimate Gambit killed hammerhead, then hammerhead shows up later and Ultimate Spider-Man like that never happened
"he's just sitting there...
MENACINGLY!!!!!!"

Good vid! Can't wait for Squadron Supreme 4, I am fully invested!
Kudos for the Game Changer shoutout!!

I think I summoned this video because I was watching the X-men videos 😂
And here I thought I summoned it, cause I was watching the all of Fox films
Ultimate x-men is such a interesting series in my opinion
Yes it really is

This video is criminally underrated

is that same eric that will break xaviers neck?
Yes
Just goes to show why the Ultimate universe sucked. Even when they have great idea, they squash them trying to be edgy.
david’s pinhead look reminds me of frank millers art from Dark knight strikes again
Can’t wait for you to talk about the Art of this one. My god I legit had no idea what was going on when iceman lost his shit
the nick spensor ultimate comics x-men series is honestly my favorite jumping on point because of how much it shakes up the status quo in a post ultimatum world and kitty Pryde is set up to be a better professor x while jean is starting to become more like magneto.
21:36 why is there just a statue of Spider-Man there?
Prof X: They ruined my book tour! LOL ;P
Would’ve been great if magneto was written like this throughout the rest of the original ultimate universe but alas we can’t have nice things
I'm surprised that Xavier didn't become The Maker honestly, he's more of a prime candidate than Reed Richards.

I can’t wait for you to cover the Ultimate Gambit storyline.
16:21 excuse me, is this supposed to be Professor Charles Xavier or Nolan Grayson?!
I quite liked this story,

My guy looking like Jack Perry from AEW

I'm not sure why, but did anyone see those action figures that resemble Spider-Man
21:36 stan lee cameo
Ultimate secrets would be nice! I don't really have a reason to recommend this other then Jessica Drew is on the cover and I love her story in the ultimate universe.
The ultimate universe is one of those things I could not begin to understand the continuity of.
not gonna lie Erik look fine as hell when hes not Magneto.
It reminded me of flash villian.the thinker maybe. May be the one You are thinking of.
Ah sorry for the miss I was busy listening to Rock Lobster. Thanks though.
