    I don't think a college degree is gonna correlate that highly with being a good English teacher. Yes they should screen the teachers, but a college degree (or a specific major) is probably not the most useful criteria.

    Vietnam has already lost many unqualifed English teachers. Simply put not enough teachers for the demand.

    The news article might not have been clear, but this discussion wasn't about letting people be teachers in Vietnam without a college degree. It was about allowing English teachers without a bachelor's degree in teaching specifically be English teachers. There is an exception that allows those who have a bachelor's degree plus TEFL to get get a work permit anyway, so this doesn't really affect degree holders either way. But it's definitely not about them allowing non degree holders to work here as teachers - they're strict on that here.

    In my opinion in the real world, regardless of laws, where there is a shortage of workers employer have to be flexible. The work will have to get done.

  • @koasana

    I am a teacher here in Vietnam and this isn’t entirely true. You still are required to have a TEFL to teach at any school/English centre, and to have your visa sponsored legally, you do need a degree. No exceptions. They may hire teachers to start but most will end up having to leave because they won’t have the legal documents required to obtain a work permit. I have personally watched this happen over and over again.

      @MT-zv2vg ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@fatandbroke That's not true at all, they're making the requirements more strict in some provinces. Now in Binh Duong you can't work legally as a teacher without a certified document of 3 years experience in a country outside Vietnam alongside the already required bachelor degree and TESOL/CELTA.

      @@fatandbroke That articles is about one committee's opinion. It's not a depiction of the current requirements. If anything it's becoming more stringent. Half of the teachers at my school have to leave because of that new requirement of the experience letter. I'd rather your interpretation be true but that's not the current situation unfortunately.

    Great news!
    I hold a B.A and an M.A in English Lit, this is great news for Vietnam (slightly bad news for me) imho.
    It makes sense on paper that only people who were taught English should teach English, but in practice, the Vietnamese hiring manager, teachers, and parents are much better able to tell if someone is a good teacher than a piece of paper ever can.
    Certainly, the average person with a B.A, is better at teaching than the average person without one, but the TEFL industry is really a lot of on-the-job training, and there are great teachers with no degree and terrible teachers with degrees.

    @markholland6657 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    as long as they have a TEFL or TESOL they should be able to AT MINIMUM follow a curriculum! at least being a native English Speaker is a good start!! the whole course is designed to teach the person HOW to teach someone to speak English.. the rest comes down to individual character of the applicant!!! Even people with a degree can still be irresponsible or 'get caught in the sauce' as you say.. the qualifications don't make any difference!!! I knew teachers who don't drink, have no degree and lost their jobs because of the restrictions, and some who have masters degrees or even are headmasters and are regularly out drinking ridiculous amounts every day getting pissed and then going to school the next day or even drinking in lunchtimes... just bring in random alcohol and drugs testing for teachers from Mon - Fri, what they do on weekends is their choice, but during school time/working time they need to be stone cold sober if they wanna work around kids...... that should weed out the bad apples!! simples!!!

  • @m.a.2649

    Getting TEFL/TESOL is easily attainable thru these certificate mills. If they go thru with this and not require uni diploma, this plus the 90 day tourist visa will reopen the flood gate of the sewage of begpacker 'teachers' pre-pandemic

    It would be great if they offered the 90 day visa and made it possible for people without college degrees to teach. They should be limited to the age groups they can teach, pass C1/C2 level tests, and be paid less than those with a degree. Even in the US we have teachers with actual teaching degrees that suck. It really depends on the individual. Not all people from English speaking countries are proficient in English. It should be at the discretion of the hiring school. They should have an HR staff member that can evaluate whether or not someone is suited for the needs of their students.

    I just moved out here from America to find a job, but if this law goes into effect, it'll be the final nail in the coffin for me. Don't get me wrong, HCMC is OK but maybe a bit of a let-down. Salaries aren't great with the Filipinas, Indians, Moroccans, and Russians flooding the market. Training centers have obnoxious, imbalanced schedules anyway. "Hi, Mr. Foreigner. We want you to teach for 3 hours on the weekdays, and 10 - 13 hours on the weekends." I mean, I knew about the salary and the weird work hours before flying over here, but I was itching to check Vietnam out anyway.

      I have the experience in studying English in HCM city. I studied three classes at two different English centers and my teachers come from Canada, US, Ireland and England. Honestly, reputative English centers and students would prefer the native rather than the accent. I heard a story that an Indian teacher with a standard American accent was rejected by a famous English center just because of his Indian passport. However, there are still chances for them in the less famous centers.

    I don't think a college degree is necessary to teach English, but I think certified in-classroom training should be required. The issue with the online certs is everyone passes so it's hard to weed out those who will perform poorly when actually teaching face-to-face. The reputable employers and training schools require an in-class demo.
