New High Performance Sander Review at 1/2 the price that is not 3m, Festool, or Mirka

  • I was about to break down and spent $650 on a Festool sander. All of the sudden the 3M Xtract sander hit the market. This is great I can get the same performance for $100 cheaper. After reading the reviews on 3m's website I decided to hold off. Then I came across this video.
    • A Cheaper Mirka DEROS ...
    This sent me down a rabbit hole. Is there a nonnamed version that is a better value? I found that this knock off was made two years ago. It can still be found on Amazon under the several different names. Less than a year ago a company can out with a version that looks almost the same but fixed all the issues that were raised in the video.
    Their model has variable speed paddle switch. It remembers the last setting when turned off or unplugged. It has a long high quality cord. Most importantly it feels like a quality tool. For the price of a Mirka Deros you can buy 3 of these. If you have watched my reviews then you know I like high value tools not high cost. This sander has to be at lest 80%-90% as good but cost only 30%-40% as much.
    You can get it here. You can also get up to a 4 year replacement

    Here is an analog switch like I use. Mine gets kicked around but still works
    amzn.to/3IfMwfa
    Matt @731Woodworks reviewed this switch. I am not sure if the electronic will hold up in my shop but I plan on giving it a try
    amzn.to/3XipZn2
    Don't forget the sanding disc. The Xtract is worth it in my opinion and is cheaper than buying sanding mesh at the box stores. I use 80 grit then go to 120 grit and finish with 220 grit on 90% of my projects.

    Thanks for the review. I was considering the 3m Xtract until I saw the reviews on the 3m site. I can get this sander with a 4 year protection plan from Amazon and still spend less than the 3m model!!!

      This sander has been a real game changer in my shop.

      I have no inside information, but I find it curious that this sander and the 3M sander came out around the same time. They both had some issues with their switches, but both have since corrected this. When I last checked, most of the negative reviews were old. With that said, this sander is one of the most-used tools in my shop. I have made a holder for it so that I can hang it next to my workbench. If it ever breaks, I will order a new one the same day.

    I really love your channel. I value your opinion on tools, because you seem to have the right balance between appreciating quality and keeping things affordable. Please show more of the what you build. I’d like to learn from how you work.

      I need to work on that. When I am building something, I concentrate on making a quality product. It is hard for me to video and not make mistakes. I have been trying to transition to making videos. I have started remodeling the shop to make better videos. I just posted under the community tab on my channel of what I am doing right now.

    Definately going to swap the 3m out for this on my "to buy" wish list. I'm using a Bosch 5" sander currently that I got about 4 years ago, which gets the job done but the vibration is crazy. I upgraded to it from a cheap Harbor Freight. Now I'm at the point in my work and experience that I could definitely benefit from a good quality sander. Thanks for sharing this tool!

      I have been trying to up my sanding game. I have 3 cordless Ryobi sanders. They are each marked for a designated grit. It works well for small projects. That way, I don't have to keep changing discs. Looking around from where I am sitting, I can see 9 power sanders and a dozen different hand sanders. Non of them have a 5mm stroke. I never knew that there was such a difference or I would have upgraded a long time ago. They have a festool ro150 clone I may order next payday. They also have a burnish tool. I can get all three, and it will still be less than what I was going to pay for one festool. This way, I can afford to get them all.

    I purchased this sander about 3mo ago and absolutely love it. I use the 3M cubitron sanding discs and there’s very little dust. I actually enjoy sanding now. I purchased the 5” head for it as well since I had a ton of 5” discs at home. It’s really quick and easy to change the heads. I can’t recommend this enough.

      I was just thinking something similar today. People hate sanding because their sander sucks but not in a good way. This thing suck but in a good way. I just got the eccentric sander. It is also crazy good.

      Thanks. Come back and let everyone know what you think after using it. I do a lot of table tops. I want a flat surface, not just smooth. I have considered making an interface pad out of an aluminum plate for my old sander. When I saw a festool video showing their hard pad, it really made sense that the accessories made a big difference. If I find one that fits, I will post it in the description.

    I've looked at these Chinese/Taiwanese Mirka style sanders before and that includes the 3M version. For me it's more for curiosity at this point as I do run the Mirka Deros which also has its own reliability issues voiced across social media platforms. I primarily run Festool sanders and extractors though. Festool shines in reliability, warranty, and their 10yr claim of sourcing parts/consumables for said tool if it becomes discontinued.
    I looked at the various Mirka style electric sanders when I was debating the Mirka Deros purchase. I couldn't find a Festool EC 150/5 anywhere in North America in Jan/Feb 22 without a 4-5 month wait time when replacing my oldest 150/5.
    The Mirka is as of now still a very good sander not quite a year later. Light, low profile, and just a comfortable sander. Dust collection is just as good as a Festool hooked to a good extractor.
    I think some operator error may account for some of the reliability issues with the Deros. In the manual it states that if using an interface/protection pad to keep the rpm's in the 7k. It has up to 10k on the paddle. I think max speed regularly with an interface pad may allow vibration to damage the control module. But it's just a theory. I did set the max throttle speed at 7.6k through the App and hopefully I don't experience the faulty control module issue.
    As mentioned I have looked at these styled sanders and that includes this Max. One thing no one ever answers me about is pad replacements. Do the obscure brands offer replacement pads for the long term? As in 2yrs + later can you find pads? And most importantly do the Mirka branded pads fit the Chinese/Taiwanese sanders?

    • @ShopRamblings
      @ShopRamblings  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So far I have not had any problems. They do sell replacement pads. Some of the generic pads also fit. I tried my festool pad but it did not work. I don't currently have a mirka pad, but it looks like it might fit. Next time you need to replace one of your mirka pads, send me the old one. I will see if it fits. So far, the only thing I do not like is that I don't have a hard backing plate. The only one they currently sell is "medium." One day, I will get around to picking up a mirka hard pad. I have heard from a couple of mirka users that say they were surprised at how good this sander is. They are not saying it is better than or even equal to, but at a third of the price, it come closer than most would think.
      I just got in my 4th MaxXt sander. It is the Rotex style. I am looking forward to putting it through its paces. It removes material ridiculously fast and surprisingly smooth. It I run into any quality issues, I will be sure to post a follow-up video.

    I have the same 1 I always check to see if someone else is testing it out here. I took a gamble and bought it when it just came out i had no issue using the maxxt besides it rubbing the rubber of the backing pad. Overall my experience has been awesome.

    One thing you need to use a pad between the sanding mesh and Velcro base or the hooks get destroyed
    3m makes them

    • @ShopRamblings
      @ShopRamblings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have seen/ heard that. I have been using the sanding screen for a couple of years now. I started when Diablo first started making them. The old gold colored ones. They came with a new protector pad in every pack. I never used them. I can go through several hundred discs before I have to change pads. The big thing I find is using a worn-out disc and letting it over heat shortens the life of the velcro quick. I have only been through maybe 70 discs so far with this sander. The way this sander is vented, it runs very cool. The velcro is still working well, but I have been trying to find some different backing pads. Maxxt sells a replacement for $19. I have been looking for a stiffer pad. I bought a festool pad. It fit the sander, but there was a gap, so there was no suction for the dust collection. The Mirka pad looks like it might fit. I am going to try that one next.

    Thanks for posting! I am interested in buying a few in for our workshop but I have read mixed reviews on reliability. Is yours still working?

    • @ShopRamblings
      @ShopRamblings  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was concerned about the same thing. I did some research and found that this sander was released around the same time as the 3M Xtract sander. On 3m's site, their sander had similar reviews. Those reviews were when they first came out. I believe they both were using the same part that was causing the problems. It was identified and redesigned.
      As far as my sander goes, it stays on my workbench. I try to remember and turn it off at night but it stays on 24/7 most of the time. It has a dedicated dust collector that is only connected to the sander. I was surprised a couple of days ago when I replaced the bag and it had at least 15 to 20 pounds of baby powder dust. It seemed like I had just replaced the bag not long before. I am not sure if it is that the dust collection it's so much better than I'm used to or that it is so much more pleasurable to sand that I am sanding more than I previously have been. Either way more Sawdust equals more or better production. I am convinced that XT tools was about to give these high-end Sanders a run for their money. I am getting ready to purchase there eccentric sander and they're burnishing tool. I hope to do some reviews on those good or bad in the next few months.

    Did that hose come with the sander? I got one of the other cheap sanders like that from Amazon. It works rather well actually, but the dust collection and hose is rather terrible.

    • @ShopRamblings
      @ShopRamblings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the hose came pre-attached. It works great. It seems there was a version that looks similar, but you can tell the difference in where the cord connects and the speed control switch. This one runs $30-$50 more, but I think it is worth it.

      I am only in the shop 4 days a week, but I use it every time I am in the shop. It is connected to a separate dust collector. It uses 5 bags. I have completely filled it, I believe 3 times.

      That sucks. I look at 3M's website and cannot find any warranty information. Have you tried contacting them? Every brand is going to have a certain amount of failures. But when you pay more for a name brand you expect that when it happens that they will take care of you.

  • @ClintonCaraway-CNC
    @ClintonCaraway-CNC ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How can you "compare" this to the high end tools that you neither own nor use?? Do you think thats a fair comparison or recommendation??
    Your comparing apples to oranges I'm afraid. Possibly not but the people who are using 3M sanders are most likely people in a commercial environment running the sanders hard. The durability issue are probably after a ton of abuse. I've been using 3M pneumatic random orbit sanders for years with no issues. We now have a couple of the brushless 3M electric sander and they are amazing. If you want to compare the two products... you need to have at least used the product. How can this company produce obviously a much cheaper product and use the same quality parts??? Answer.... they can't.

    • @ShopRamblings
      @ShopRamblings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not sure where you got that I "don't own nor use" any high-end sanders. I never said that. I did say at around the 4 minute mark that if you owned a high-end sander, you wouldn't downgrade to this. That this was for your average person using a box store sander. There are tons of reviews on festool, mirka, and 3m sanders. Most of the tool reviews I do are on tools that have a higher performance to cost ratio or that people might not have heard of. After using both, I can say there doesn't seem to be much difference to me. Can you help me understand what difference you found?
      Not everyone has had a good experience with the 3m. Check out the reviews on their site
