I'm still not entirely sure how I survived Reach. my squad said I had gone feral and simply started killing everything, that explains why I woke up covered in blood, wearing armor that wasn't my own and carrying an empty Gauss turret.
Realistically the UNSC ground forces fought on Reach like they did on every other planet the Covenant choose to attack. They set up a retreat path for civilians and fortified the hell out of the approach to their positions. Basically turned each of their planets into well Cadia in terms of how they fought defensively . Most of the Covenant casualties were a result of the Covenant being forced to attack fortified position. Any time they tried to do some kind of rescue mission they got turned into well the video above . Burnt Swiss Cheese by the Covenant. More often than not on reach the UNSC didn't bother helping the civilians except pointing them in the right direction. There were evacuations of civilians but it wasn't easy to say the least.
