  • I equipped a 3D printed boat with 10 tiny electric motors with 16 kilograms of thrust. The boat is a 200% larger than my previous version!

    What an emotional roller coaster. The disappointment in the end is so tangible that it comes through the screen. And when you said that you are grateful at least the batteries survived it brought sad tears to the corners of my eye. On the plus side, having these fails in the videos makes them more interesting, so it is something

    2 Small tips, first maybe invest in a smokestopper. This way you can test your electronics without the worry of them breaking. Second tipp would be to setup a failsave for your receiver so it turns of the throttle the moment it is out of RC range. Would make it easier for you to get the stuff back and also stop it from burning

    • @derralfono
      @derralfono 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Indeed. If not smokestopper, then a scientific power supply would also be life saving for testing electronics, because of the current limit which can be set.

      It would be good to hear you talk through the design decisions you made like why air versus water props. If you dialed back the production values on stuff like practical special effects (4D printing etc.) it might give you more headspace to think about those aspects of your videos.

    Im no pro, but i guess that these 4 in 1 drone escs are more optimised to run at like 40-50% for most of the time and just shortly peak at 100% or 65 amps. Because when you are flying, you are normally not constantly giving them full throttle. Maby that caused them to heat up really bad and burn out. Maby installing a fan and some heat-sinkd could prevent this? I dont know, its just a guess, but interesting Video!

    • @wflagg
      @wflagg 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

      they are also expected to be flying with constant airflow, not inside a conatiner

    • @toolbaggers
      @toolbaggers 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      ESCs work harder when under partial throttle. 50% power means the ESC has to switch on and off equally at high frequencies. Think of the ESC as a bouncer at a club. Much easier work for the bouncer to just let everybody in versus having to sort through people and deny some from entering.

    Super Glue Accelerator: I've found that using super glue to match up parts and spray accelerator on the outside once the match is perfect is much calmer than trying to match parts in one go. Also, alignment features are awesome. I typically create square pyramids (extract them 100mm but at -45 degrees) - they print well on the positive part. It's easy to subtract from the mating face, but I also offset the mating faces by -0.1mm (I create a gap) to allow the pieces to mate up perfectly. The negative part also prints very well. Something to consider when mating parts.

    I would recommend using water propellers. Water is 800 times as dense as air, so you have to move a ton more air to get the power of a small water propeller. I saw that you did finally get the boat up on the planing surfaces, so that's good. I saw a couple places where it tried to plow into the water, though. Maybe an improved design or more weight aft would help get the front up and out of the water faster. Great project!

    • @joewoodchuck3824
      @joewoodchuck3824 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The medium density should be proportional to how much power is needed. My thinking is that if you can efficiently couple X number of watts to the water, then it should take about the same wattage for similar performance by efficiently coupling with air. I emphasize efficiency because there are ideal air propeller designs for a certain application just as there are for water propellers. I don't know how to arrive at those designs, but I'm sure there are people who do. Air propeller choices are abundant. I've not found many water propellers for models.
      Moving to another facet, I've been toying with the idea of a simple and much less sophisticated air boat design myself. I'm going the air propeller route because there's much less to fuss with due to all components being out of the water.
      Lastly, air thrust from will tend to push the bow down so it doesn't have a tendency to back flip at higher speeds, where thrust from below would tend to lift the bow. Sensible bow shape is needed for each of course.

    Good work my friend. Something to
    Maybe try would be angling the motors thrust down a little more then just straight back to help lift the hull. Those sponsons want to be barely skipping the water if at all. Can’t wait to see more of this hull!!

  • @DerRCModellbauer
    @DerRCModellbauer 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    It could be that the propeller pitch is pointing towards the boat and not backwards 5:35 . Turn the propellers and you have more thrust. Nice project. 👍

    Hey, i loved the build but i have a sugestion. Add a resettable/thermal fuse in your boats so if they catch fire, all power gets shut off and the boat will stop. You could also add one to fill it with water or have something for that so it doesn't burn up. Still a awesome boat!

  • @Archestrel
    @Archestrel 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    You might try to put the motors mount a bit futher ahead to reduce the torque that pushes the head of the boat into water. I'd also try my best to reduce splashes that slows the boat down. Anyways your videos are always a pleasure to watch, keep up the good work!
