This is one of those songs that has a perfect title. That saxophone refrain makes me feel like I'm walking through the red light district, that extended guitar solo has "highway cop chase" written all over it, the downtempo section feels like I'm looking at the sun rise behind a cluster of skyscrapers, and that chorus could easily fit into a montage of violent crimes happening throughout the city. Such a beautifully crafted tune. Tbh I think saying this is 21st Century Schizoid Man version 2 doesn't do it justice. Yeah they both have the same basic song structure, but this track feels much more complete and fully realized than 21st Schizo. Out of the two, this is the song paints the most vivid picture. A picture of a city
this and schizoid man might sound very similar at times, but they both have very unique things to offer and have their respective places on the KC discog!!!
And to think...he took a short amount of time off from his job as a computer operator to do the session for this, and also the "McDonald & Giles" LP...and then back again.
Some of you may not know, that the original name of the song is not "Pictures Of A City" and not even "A Man, A City", it is "The Exact Moment, When Jazz-Fusion Became Prog-Rock"

After the Court and Poseidon albums, two incredible albums that I adored back in the mid to late 70s, I couldn't wait to hear more from King Crimson. Starless and Bible Black was so disappointing that I was left deflated. Fast forward to the end of February 2022 when I'm lent a copy of the same album and I have realised I was just unable to appreciate it then. It is soooooo RICH! It's been on all the time as I drive around in my van (and the motion possibly helps to absorb it). I didn't deserve it all those years ago but right now, well, it's nothing short of a masterpiece. I don't know what else to say!
I have also recently re-discovered S&BB, though I liked it well enough when it was introduced to me. Now I hear Fracture in a totally different way. For the longest time I only listened to Belew-era KC, but all winter long I've been geeking on the Wetton-era albums (Lark's Tongue, S&BB, and Red). But in the last month it's been the first 4 KC albums. I never appreciated the long-form improvised pieces until this age. Man, listen to A Sailor's Tale. Then listen to it again ;)
I never heard In The Wake, and my introduction to this song was seeing them live in 2015. It plastered me to my seat. I need to really listen to this album ... finally!
After all these years it is nice to see Michael Giles get his do respect, like the Pioneer of prog drummers. I wonder if BB ever acknowledged him as influence, or Phil for that matter.
