Plato’s spawn cold ivied eyes
Snare truth in bone and globe.
Harlequins coin pointless games
Sneer jokes in parrot’s robe.
Two women weep, Dame Scarlet Screen
Sheds sudden theatre rain,
Whilst dark in dream the Midnight Queen
Knows every human pain.
In air, fire, earth and water
World on the scales.
Air, fire, earth and water
Balance of change
World on the scales
On the scales.
Bishop’s kings spin judgement’s blade
Scratch “Faith” on nameless graves.
Harvest hags hoard ash and sand
Rack rope and chain for slaves
Who fireside fear fermented words
Then rear to spoil the feast;
Whilst in the aisle the mad man smiles
To him it matters least.
Heroes hands drain stones for blood
To whet the scaling knife
Magi blind with visions light
Net death in dread of life.
Their children kneel in Jesus till
They learn the price of nails;
Whilst all around our mother earth
Waits balanced on the scales.

People complain that this is another "Epitaph" but why would someone complain about having another amazing song?
Honestly. Sure they’re similar, but they do have differences and each is amazing in its own way. Few other songs make me feel the same way as these do, and the fact we have two of them rather than just one is a blessing in my opinion.
Personally, I feel Epitaph's lyrics speak to me more, but In the Wake of Poseidon has a melody and a beat that affects me in a way, very few songs have.
This album is like “in the court of the crimson king’s” younger sibling. Similar, yet not totally the same.
the background singing is more reminiscent of the title track of their debut anyway.
I like itwop better than Epitaph purely because the chorus is amazing
So, imagine my shock and disbelief when I saw King Crimson pop up on the FlyLo station in GTA5.
Ayyeee that’s why I showed up here too
Yes. I was waiting in gta lobby for a job to strt and this song started playing. I freezed up and was like what is this song, it’s so beautiful!!
Bro I was flying to a bunker or something in my helicopter and was listening to FlyLo as usual, but was aware of the new music. I, somehow in my years of listening to classics/oldies, completely skipped over King Crimson (I'm a jojo fan too so that's a serious fail). I hear this in FLYLO of all stations and I'm like "This is..... beautiful". And here I am. My god I'm glad I found this.
Same here.
wait, what, i have like 150 hours on gta and i have never heard it, is it new?
Greg Lake had one of the most beautiful voices of all time... What an amazing artist. Rest in peace, Greg.
Agreed! Back in the early 1970's when I was a teenager, I discovered King Crimson. Greg Lake's voice led me to ELP....I have been an avid fan of both bands. ever since.
Love the prog rock from the 1970's.
Miss him so much

Greg lake, Jon Anderson, and Justin Hayward are the voices of the sound track of my life.
My daughter is a drummer. I sent this to her she was blown away by the percussion on this song. Thankfully we can have access to masterpieces and share them with a younger generation that would’ve never heard them.
Michael Giles is so underrated, his drumming is simply brilliant.
Giles is incredible no doubt
I honestly can't describe how much I love this song; if the apocalypse had a theme, this would be it
Been thinking the same for years. Wow.
Retro go back to #courtposting I need money
Same thoughts. For a long time, i saw this tune as "Epitaph part2", but this stand by his own as one of the milestones of the KC catalog

King Crimson?!
Actually uploading high quality audio of their music???
Bless you Robert Fripp for seeing the benefits of internet preservation, imma listen to more of their discography now
Waiting for discipline plss
I doubt this has anything to do with Robert Fripp and more to do with the launch of TH-cam Music.
@@fleursbruyantes4177 YT Music has existed for a long time now...
Bob Dylan once wrote a song so great that he wrote it again and it was still perfect. King Crimson once made an album so perfect that they made it again and it was still flawless. Only those two musical savants could pull this off and still be the envy of their peers.
Like a Rolling Stone, Positively 4th Street
and
In the Court of the Crimson King, In The Wake Of Poseidon
of course
How do you know when all of this music was written? Pictures of a City was in the rep before they recorded this album
Actually Dylan has reused his own music in a couple of songs:
Girl from the North Country and Boots of Spanish Leather (most obvious one)
Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues and Visions of Johanna (they feel really different but musically they're very close)
Time Passes Slowly and Isis
Like a Rolling Stone and Handy Dandy
Apart from Handy Dandy they're all good songs though
All of Bob's songs sound the same LOL
well said in fact super well said!
With Michael Giles drums, Greg lake vocal & the mellotron sounds just perfect.
My favorite King Crimson Song. Best drum outro.
Same here , on both counts . The drumming is superb !
Spot on. The drumming makes it stand out so much (not that the rest of the band isn't playing great either!)
Michael Giles...a legend
I think it’s Bill Bruford on drum kit 🥁
@@LanceHouston-x7x it's not Buford. I think Buford was still playing for Yes at this point. It's Giles. Same drummer as on the first King Crimson album.
Spechless. Just sit back, lay down, close your eyes and let the music flow through the stereo speakers and feel the vibration of the bass and drums with the subwoofer. Totally masterpiece. Timeless.

Michael Giles drum fills on this are bonkers/genius, especially on the end coda.
Also, some of the best Mellotron work ever.
Agree! That drumming is jaw dropping. I LOVE when that 'Tron Brass comes in and sends chills up my spine.
One of the greatest endings in rock history.... The definition of "epic"

The definition of "epic-taph".
i’ve only started getting into king crimsons other albums as a whole, this song is what convinced me to try them out because holy shit is it amazing
Prepare yourself for a fucking wild ride then. This is probably the last song in their catalogue that sounds so similar to Court

Greg Lake's Lead Vocal is so heartfelt.
I've read where fans were so moved by King Crimson's music at concerts that they would openly weep.
I bought a sealed reissue of "In The Wake Of Poseidon" yesterday which features the wonderful artwork - "12 Archetypes". I immediately went over to Michael's and bought an album frame and proudly displayed it on my bedroom wall.
those people crying were high. i sometimes get a little too wacked out and tear up to gregs voice in the final verse in epitaph
Each of the archetypes features in the song. It's an album cover you can read while listening.
My favorite one. I can't understand how many people simply don't know this. It is transcendental.
Have been huge Crimson fan for over 50 years now and I never tire to hear the brilliance from 1970 to 2021. Thanks for posting this timeless masterpiece!
I saw them in '74? Majestic theater Dallas. What a night!
I first purchased the record album "In the Court of the Crimson King" for $3.75 when I was in 10th grade in 1971. I have been a fan ever since! It also led me to Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

Man there’s something so special about their 70s albums. The contrast of dark and brooding to serene and melancholic I can’t get enough of. Poseidon and Lizard have some masterful acoustic work from Fripp, one of the reasons I love the prog and jazz fusion guitarists so much. Crimson will always be the Kings of Prog for me, way darker and dangerous than their contemporaries.
I always looked at ITWoP as the apocalypse that ITCoTCK predicted
That outro is something else. The drums and mellotron really come into their own here.

Il testo è semplicemente fantastico, poesia pura che secondo me dovrebbe essere fatto ascoltare in tutte le scuole di musica e non solo, saluti da Treviso

melotron turns its absolutely melancholic...what wonderful piece...
The wake of Poseidon, was one of your favorite songs. A sweet but complex song, a non-trivial music with original movements, the wonderful voice of Greg Lake, the unmistakable guitar of Robert Fripp. This music resembles you, it is sweet and sad at the same time, like the feeling that pervades me when I think of you, my sweet love, lost forever.
You can also "read" the album cover for all the characters in the song.
Esta pieza es una obra de arte que te da un viaje sin necesidad de drogarte ella es con sus notas un alucinógeno de acordes que te lleva mas allá del tiempo, insuperable....
🔥🔥
I agree. This song is the closest thing to taking drugs that doesn't involve taking drugs.
Greg Lake's voice always thrills me, specially when he was in KC
Waiting for Larks' and Red, THRAK is really good too, but it's not releasing anytime soon, I see.
Court of the Crimson King and Wake of Poseidon were like a one-two punch of demented genius..
No metal band with their talk of drugs, overdose, death, and politics will ever reach the despair, depressing, and cynical atmosphere that OG King Crimson had. They’re the GOATs when it comes to this heavy style of music.
i was so focus in the drums that complety forget this haves lyricis
I've noticed a lot of music fans make the mistake of assuming that certain songs were written before/after other songs simply because they appear on a subsequent record. Do we know for sure that the music for Epitaph was written before Wake? A Man, A City was a part of the live repertoire along with Schizoid so why does everyone assume Schizoid was written first?
The fact is that we don't know and its more likely that a lot of music was laying around during Court and they had to pick and choose what song went where, etc. This is more common than people seem to think.
The “in the court of the crimson king” was their first album right? In the BBC radio album “epitaph” from 69 had epitaph featured in it, I’m not sure what year this song was made but I’m sure epitaph was before it
A Man, a City wasn't fully written until the start of the US tour in November 1969 (the lyrics were written in a hotel room in New York), though an early version of the instrumental was played as part of the Trees suite at a show in Croydon that October.
"McDonald and Giles" contains some tracks that would have gone on Poseidon if Ian had stayed.
Average Epitaph Fan Vs Average In the wake of Poseidon enjoyer
Both are equal
There’s no vs here, both have great taste.
Both is good
Both are Great!
Epitaph and ITWOP...both masterpieces!!
The *kick kick snare in between the drum fills is so satisfying, it almost acts as a hype man to the fills like "yeah I just said that" or something
Easily one of the true masterpieces ever recorded by genius musicians that were incredible at there profession.
Have loved the Mellotron ever since first hearing it on "In the Court of the Crimson King" album back in the early 1970's. Today I have a mellotron VST on my Yahama MODX synth keyboard. It's an amazing sound to create with. Fifty years ago I never imagined such a thing would be possible!
Life-long King Crimson fan.
When I finally get a job and some money, the mellotron is gonna be my first instrument. I love hearing it.

Yeah, ju the Artwork was always a crucial aspect of the whole Trip.
Yeah, this is the second to last King Crimson album cover that looks absolutely beautiful(the last being Islands). If people accuse this cover of being cluttered then they haven't seen the cover for Lizard.
@@Christian-97 All the archetypes on the cover of Poseidon appear in the title song. You could read the cover (inside and out) whilst listening to the song. An "audio-visual" experience ;-)

Greg Lake the voice of an angel
Pictures of a City = Schozoid Man

Do Robert and the other musicians who created this even realize how great it is?
Absolutely inspired, gorgeous, chilling, timeless! RIP Greg, live long and prosper Robert.
This song includes the double track of vocals on the third verse and chorus elegantly. I love this one.

Sinfield really is an epic poet in the Blake tradition of English poetry.
Al minuto 6:58 mi cade sempre una lacrima di nostalgia, tante giornate passate nella mia stanzetta ad ascoltare quest album...
A fantastic follow up to Epitaph and In The Court Of The Crimson showcasing gorgeous vocals from Greg Lake with beautiful acoustic guitar playing and haunting mellotron from Robert Fripp. For me, the most epic track of the entire album that could have easily fit in with the King Crimson debut album
Michael Giles is amazing on this track
They created this amazing formula that was for In Court Of The Crimson King. Fripp and Co. continued that formula with a different set of tracks with In The Wake Of Poseidon. I like it when a band is patient with something great they’ve got at the start, and continue to develop it to create more excellent music, rather than completely changing their style for their second album and because of that failing to comply with the new style they got. In other words it’s not as good and they fail. I’m only saying this about the bands who have had this kind of approach. So I’m glad this album is similar in style to In Court Of....Great stuff!!!
The 'McDonald and Giles' album contains tracks that would have been on 'Poseidon'. I still tend to view those three albums as a Crimson 1970 triptych. The egg was then broken and they moved on. Interesting fact that there was no mellotron on M&G and they used actual strings and brass.

Michael Giles' drumming during the finale is just from outter space, fantastic !
work of art
My fav. band for 45 years and love the comments below-the album cover suggests the mystery and wonder of the human spirit, if imperfect with the depiction of the slave.
What I have loved for 50 years about this and several other classic KC compositions is that I can listen to the entire piece focused on the vocals and lyrics, or on the mellotron, on just Robert Fripp's elegant fills and counter points, or on the bass, and of course on Michael Giles's unique drumming.
In short, it's endlessly fascinating!

just a brilhant artwork, a lovely masterpiece. R.ip Greg Lake.
So beautiful💕💕
To my mind, Poseidon is like a reflection of the first release...and overall i like it better. Stranger, more mysterious, more atmospheric. A spooky, singular pinnacle.
Possibly my favorite Crimson track but as a drummer I find the drums on this too busy. If you could take the style of playing that Bill Bruford did on Exiles and impose it on this track then this song would sound almost perfect. But aside from that I love the melody and the fantastic vocals by Greg Lake. A Crimson Classic!!
Indeed. Excess and repetitive drumming has ruined an infinity of potentially great songs, from fine young cannibals to eurhythmics: ideally, you shouldn't even be aware of them at all - thought of course this is a rather deliberate overstatement. Bruford was a (the) master of discretion, subtlety and imagination - he really listened to and interacted-integrated creatively with his fellow musicians.
@@markmillan5793 coined the term: "admirable restraint"!
@@dudleylitz7369 Exactly ! As opposed to penetrant and "overbearing" so to speak !
I disagree, the drumming is what elevates this to masterpiece status for me, especially towards the end
@@dudleylitz7369 That was in reference to his non-playing on Trio. His actual drumming isn't that discreet and better for it. The drums on One More Red Nightmare to name one example are just as prominent as the drums here and like here, it's arguably the best thing about the track.
I was normally playing GTA online with my friends then suddenly this song started playing in like 4:30 and i was literally mesmerized by it. muted all of my friends' voice chat just for hearing this work of art purely.

Every time I listen to it I get chills.... ( and I've been getting them for just over 50 years! )
Great song!!! Wish they posted the slightly longer fade out version. We miss some of Michael Giles great drum fills at the end on this one. Can’t get an answer to why 2 different song lengths. The 1987 cd release had the 7:56 length and the 40th vinyl release, though the Steve Wilson 40th CD mix uses the 8:26 version as does the 2019 vinyl release. The “download card” that comes with the 40th vinyl has the 8:26 for the vinyl transfer of the original Island album. Master tape mixups?
