This show really was written like a science fiction novel.
Remember that time she became a local Drazi leader by mistake? That was hilarious. I love this series.

I first saw the series when I was relatively young, so it took me a couple times to understand what actually happened there. 😅

Sage advice.
"I'm in the middle of 15 things, all of them annoying" is perhaps my favorite quote from B5... possibly second, only to Zathrus' fantastic "Sad life, probably will have a sad death. At least there's symmetry" rant. Man I loved B5.
That reminds me. I need to do a video for Zathras. He may have only been in three episodes, but pretty much the entirety of his scenes are worthy of videos such as this.

I love Zathras, and Zathras, and Zathras. I even love their cousin Zathras.
Zathrus, one of the few to actually get Ivanova. "Not wanting you to get confused" as he pats her head.
Ivanova is such a kick ass character. It can be tender or tough. The show is full of great actors, but Claudia Christian still stands out a little from the crowd.
It was never the same after she left.
She could do both tragedy and comic relief so well. Recasting her part would be tough.
Best character on the show.
I still LOVE the episode where Sheridan told Ivanova that the Pilots would keep practicing until they got it right. The legendary line by Ivonova? It was along the lines of "Yes sir. Maybe in the next drill we'll start using LIVE AMMO. That seems to have a marked increase on efficiency!"
You could see the pilots freak out when she emphasized "LIVE AMMO". It was glorious!
1:57 "...all I can figure is that I'm repaying karma at a vastly accelerated rate."
You missed the "I am Death Incarnate" one and the one, where she talked a previously unknown species into a war by mentioning the Vorlons

Ivanova saying nothing happened, please remain calm means its time to panic. (I also loved that episode where Sheridon outsmarted the council into doing what he wanted.)

2:18 - I know these clips are all about Ivanova, but can we just take a moment to appreciate Franklin’s comments about her “borders?”
And somehow, Franklin survived saying that. She must have felt merciful that day...or her revenge later was gloriously unsuitable for viewers.

@@robertbusek30 I don't recall her ever going off on anybody for paying her a compliment unless she knew they were trying to manipulate her. Ivanova was hot and she knew it, it just wasn't what she was all about--brawling with the Drazi was more along her idea of a good time than dancing and soft lights.

Same here! I usually try to pick one favorite character from each show I watch, but every attempt to do that with B5 has failed. There's reasons to like all of them, including the bad guys even if it's liking to hate them.
Hard to choose, g'kar and londo, especially together.
JMS is remaking the series, so I suppose we'll find out for sure :D
@@devilsluk Still just a script, apparently CW has an option but HBO would like it too but CW needs to pass but instead punted it to 2023. Watch The Offer to understand how dysfunctional the industry is.
It's much more similar to modern TV than it was to most of its contemporaries, being a pioneer of arc-based, serialised storytelling.
The real reason it couldn't be made today is because it's an original property and not an adaptation, sequel or remake of a proven success.
The ‘Babylon 5 Mantra’ will forever be my fav Ivanova line, and one of my favorite lines from the show period. It was so early in the show, but encapsulates her character perfectly
It would be my favorite line if it wasn‘t for a very small thing. This show also features a scene ending with the line „if you value your life, be somewhere else.“
@@christianemden7637 good ol’ Delenn, may she Rest In Peace. Her monologue in that scene is by far my favorite one of hers, and easily in my top 5 for B5 overall
But they cut it short. She follows it with a glance upward and "sorry about the 'god' bit."
Ivanova was one of the best strong Sci-Fi Female leads in history and im all for it in the 90's she was in an elite group of strong Sci-Fi leads.
I had forgotten how terrifying she actually was.
I agree, that’s one reason I find it so insulting when the left pushes the idea that there haven’t been any strong female characters in movies and in science fiction, as by doing so they completely discount Ivanova, Delenn, Ripley, Leila, Sara Conner and countless other amazing strong female characters over the years. I mean they could easily make a case of this type of character being under represented in shows, but instead they push an extremist narrative which ignores the women who have done such amazing works in films and on tv as an excuse to jam women into roles just so that spot is filled by a woman.

I like her so much better then Janeway. Cuter and scarier. And didn't doom humanity to the borg. Lol
The problem rises when you don't think of the female characters as more than just being female... For a great majority of all the scenes in B5 you could gender reverse the rolls, and it still makes sense as there is no gender propaganda being pushed... Even from the most sexist species ,the centauri, there was still plenty of scenes showing strong powerful women that wasn't just hating men because they were men...

Such a brilliant, motivated, powerful performance, of a brilliant, motivated, powerful character, who happens to be a stunningly beautiful woman. Ivanova will always be one of my ATF characters, portrayed by one of my ATF actresses.
If they remade this, Ivanova would be dropping F bombs all the time. This show was able to convey angry and all other extreme emotions without swearing up and down
And we never would have gotten the scene with Sheridan explaining the word "butt" to Delenn because he would have used the other word when he said what he said.
@@AuthorDodgeMerrin I think they DID use swears in this show but they were only for specific scenes. Modern day Star Trek uses an F bomb like every other episode as well as other swears.

@@Excalibur01 They swore all the time, but the human characters at least used alternative swear words like "Frag" and "Stroke," leading to Delenn saying "Absofragginglutely, Dammit!"
Worth noting, Star Trek also did the "make up swear words" bit, with one scene in TNG having a Romulan Admiral using Klingon profanity to insult Worf, and Riker using Romulan profanity to insult the Admiral in exchange. Other times they'd just have Picard swear in French, which is of course no more a real language than Klingon is.
@@Raguleader It was a different time for TV. Today, scripts are defined by how profane it is, how dramatic the scenes are and also add excess violence. It's the post Game of Thrones world of TV.
Back in the day, a show isn't judged by how violent, dramatic and profane it is.

Straczynski actually has a new book/comic/graphic novel about to start (or maybe it released this week). I don't know much about it but I was going to give it a try because of how much I liked B5. I hope that it's good.

Ivanova is the very definition of break glass in case of war.
When thanking or praising God please remember that Ivanova is very busy and should only be disturbed in cases of extreme emergency.

I loved Susan. She was one of my favourites.
I saw Claudia Christian once in a store at JFK or LaGuardia in 2007. She was in line to check out, and I was a couple people behind her. She looked back and we had eye contact. I just smiled and she went on about her business.
I just really wanted to go up to her and ask "Boom today?", but I know from living in L.A. you just leave actors alone in public and give them their privacy. She still looked great then as well.
One of the best characters on B5. She typically got the snappiest lines.
I'm not sure I would have been able to restrain myself if I'm being honest. Good on you to respect her as a person as she went about her business.
Ivonava had some of the best lines in the show. There is a woman you do not want to piss off. Remember, she once threw a telepath out a window of a 3rd floor room. We can only assume she knew the pool was down there....

B5 was everything any series (Scifi or otherwise) could ever hope to be. With a Beginning, A Middle and a satisfying end. Rumors are that there are plans for a do-over. Why? Leave PERFECTION ALONE.
Someone always think they can make it better by making it "edgier". Probably want to make Ivanova a lesbian.
A re-master with external shots modernized & perhaps bits added to better fit the implied scale would be great.

This gave me the biggest ear-to-ear grin.
If not for the very outdated cgi, that show could have been a good mine today.
Amazing immersive story and cast to this day.
Good CGI tends to just be a cover up for bad writing.

I am always amazed that she got pushed to the side in Hollywood. The writers produced good lines but she made them so interesting and memorable. Claudia was talented but some people could not get by the good looks sigh.

That speech would send me running without her ever having to fire a shot. Her tone alone is enough to make anybody realize they are about to die.

writers of today need to take note. LtCmdr Susan Ivanova is the archetype of "strong female character" you cry about so much
they made her a strong character without having to point out every 5 seconds that she's a woman.
But she was also a woman, the modern strong female needs to be strong independent, and remind you regularly of her being a female, since otherwise you would easily mistake her to a him. This is where the modern ones fail, they focus too much on the strong part, to the point of forgetting that a strong female also must be female.
Strong? She said is GOD..
Writers of today are mostly sociopolitical hacks with no writing skills

There were a lot of well-written strong female characters back then. TV and movies in the 70s, 80s, and 90s had plenty of them, including leads. I have no idea why modern "feminists" ignore them

Ivanova kinda reminds me of Major (later Colonel) Kira Nerys from Star Trek: Deep Space 9. They're both great at their shared job, that being the long-suffering but well-respected second-in-command of a massive space station populated by aliens from all across the galaxy (and when I say aliens I am including Humanity in that list as we are all aliens to each other). Which makes me think what a crossover between DS9 and B5 would look like. I'd imagine Londo would automatically be on Odo's radar for all the nonsense he causes, and Sisko would probably ask G'Kar to stop singing after he receives a petition (led by Quark) for G'Kar to stop singing

To preface, B5 is my top favorite TV series ever. The Shadows ship is the scariest alien space craft in all of Sci-fi.
With that, Buffy the Vampire Slayer has a good, strong female lead and some very witty dialog. Look up the episodes "Hush" and "Once More With Feeling"
Buffy: "I get nervous and I start babbling ... and he starts babbling ... and it's a babble fest."
I briefly met Claudia Christian once at a Renaissance Pleasure Faire. Very lovely lady.
Babylon 5 is also my number 1 favorite series. It is a big inspiration to me in my own writing in all areas, but especially when it comes to character development and light-hearted humor.
