@@SouthernGentleman Tariffs, taxes, Harpers Ferry, war crimes...how is any of this relevant to Mayor Landrieu's argument? He's talking about a daily reminder to black and brown folks that they were once considered property, not deserving of human rights, and that the men whom these statues honor fought to preserve the system that depended upon that consideration. Why should those men be honored today? Why should the descendants of those humiliated, enslaved people be reminded daily that such men are still honored?

Just finished watching Mayor Mitch Landrieu 's speech regarding the removal of the confederate statues from public lands. I applaud his Eloquence and his Humanity. His words rang true to many people who truly believe that America is One Nation, not separate states, and that we, as a people, can move forward as one, as well. We are definitely stronger as we stand together. I will visit New Orleans in the near future to appreciate the diversity and beauty of a city that was smart enough to elect a man like Mitch Landrieu to lead their city through a part of the 21 st century. Thank you, Mayor Landrieu, for your inspiring words.

OK. They were 1 nation. In 1859. The war was not, I repeat, not, a war against slavery. It was STATE'S RIGHTS! Look. Here's the real story : 1. Texas was annexed until 1845. 15 Years later! That was in 1860. 1 year later, we went to war. When I say, we, I mean the Confederacy (Confederate States of America) was formed. It was not about slavery. It was state's rights. Slavery was just a part of the cause.

lololololol, you think that all of the other members of your so-called "ethnic group", the African-Americans and the Natives, would be in favour of the legalization of slavery, and rendering it protected by the Constitution?
      Hahahahahahahahahahaha
      you're funny 😂

    • @michaelcoulter1114
      @michaelcoulter1114 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bloody Bill Anderson
      Lololol, English? Australian?
      Nope.
      I am Canadian!
We also use the English spelling, as you obviously didn't know.
As for my education, Canadian schools are superior to American schools, especially those in the South.
You specifically told me to Google the Corwin Amendment, which was an attempt by Southern politicians to enshrine "States Rights", and amend the Constitution to provide a legal basis for continuing slavery in those States that practiced that "Peculiar Institution". If such an amendment had passed through the House of Representatives, and the Senate, and been signed into law by the sitting President, then slavery might well have continued to the present day, though I doubt that would be the case, as anti-slavery sentiments were on the rise in the North, while the majority of the civilized countries of the world had already banned that odious practice, or were in the process of doing so at the time in question. Perhaps the only moral stand the British Empire ever took in its heyday was to ban slavery in all of the territories claimed by the Throne of England.
As for your question regarding when you threatened me, you implied such a desire by ending your reply to my comment with a desire to kill Liberals, which you obviously thought I was.
Wishing to kill people over their political philosophy while you live in a Democratic society, shows you for the fool you are, as the strength of any Democratic society is allowing, actually demanding the freedom of all people in said democracy to choose their own philosophy. Without that freedom, there can be no democracy.
Of course, America isn't really a democracy anymore, is it?
It stopped being a democracy the day the SCOTUS allowed corporations to buy your politicians with "campaign contributions", and sweet patronage deals guaranteeing politicians high payed jobs when they retire from "public service" (hah!)
The last election showed how far the US has fallen - one party, the Democrats, colluding with their favoured candidate to insure her victory, and the Republicans choosing a so-called "populist", who promptly showed his true colours after his election by using Executive Orders to slash environmental protections, gutting protections for workers so corporations can make even larger profits than they already were. His next action was to replace Obamacare, which will cause tens of millions to lose their health insurance - estimates range from 21 million to 36 million people will be affected.
America, the country that was one of the first countries to choose a Democratic system of government has become an Oligarchy.
This isn't the usual America-bashing from a Canadian, this is sorrow that our neighbours have changed so much that they're hardly recognizable.
I admire many of the accomplishments of America, I like Americans, and treasure the friendship our two countries have shared, but truth must be the foundation of any friendship.

    • @michaelcoulter1114
      @michaelcoulter1114 7 ปีที่แล้ว

The Constitution of the USA sets forth the powers of the Federal government, and also limits that power, dictating which political circumstances lie within the purview of the "Several States" and which are Federal in nature. This was intended to give common rights that cannot be infringed upon by State governments, ensuring that each State conforms to that central group of rights and freedoms, while allowing each State to control certain matters that enhance and define their own cultural norms.
"States rights" were never intended to set up independent, de facto countries within the central body of the United States.
The Civil War started because of several factors, that is true, but the BASE cause was slavery, with the other factors propping up that central issue, essentially to allow the argument that "it isn't just about slavery", an argument that is still being propagated to this day.
      Why?
It's difficult to accept that you seceded from the Union because your ancestors wanted to continue owning people, I'd imagine.
Canadian schools are objectively better, with continually higher results on standardized tests, compared to American schools. This isn't an opinion, this is fact. My claim that Southern schools are inferior to Northern schools is also objective fact, based on standardized test results, not subjective opinion.
As for my stance on President Trump, the statements I made in my previous reply are also facts - he has gutted the EPA, removed protections for workers, and is in the process of gutting healthcare, all for the benefit of corporations and the wealthy.
Did you know that there are 40 members of the House of Representatives who collectively own tens of millions of dollars worth of stock in healthcare corporations? That this stock will appreciate in value by over 23 million dollars if Trumpcare passes?
A similar situation exists in the for-profit Prison industry, which has led to the closure of Publicly funded Prisons in favour of increased investment in for-profit prisons. For-profit prisons are inefficient compared to Publicly funded prisons, the rate of recidivism is higher in inmates of for-profit prisons, and the number of conflicts between prisoners and guards that result in increased sentences for the inmates is nearly double.
It makes sense, of course - a never-ending source of prisoners guarantees increased profits for the corporations, and if the lives of prisoners and their family's are destroyed, they're just poor people, right?
Why do you think that the "war on drugs" is still being escalated, despite the fact that it has been an abject failure since it was declared? The head of your Justice Department has publicly stated that he will instruct prosecutors to seek the harshest possible sentences for low-level drug offenders, leading to yet more people being given what are effectivly life sentences for simple possession of marijuana, while violent criminals are receiving short sentences, and being released from prison to commit further violent crimes.
      How can this be explained?
Simple, there's a profit to be made.
And profit is all that matters to corporations and the wealthy.
As far as your claim that Canada is a "vassal state" goes, do you know which country is the largest supplier of oil to the US? The largest supplier of electricity?
      That would be Canada.
During the economic meltdown that began in 2008 Canada suffered very little loss, and recovered far quicker than any other country in the world.
      Why?
Because you continued to purchase our oil, electricity, and other natural resources despite the dire financial situation your country was in.
      Lol, who's the vassal?
Obviously, that's a joke, but our two countries have a unique relationship, unlike any other that exists on Earth, and to describe Canada as a "vassal" shows a lack of understanding as to the nature of that relationship.
We are family, and I hope that never changes.

The Civil War was a power grab as much as it was a war of ideas. Born in mid 60's, and grew up in Carolina pulling for the Tar Heels in basketball, all I knew about this history was the t v. Series Roots, and elementary teachers telling us how the good guys beat the bad guys. I had to learn on my own about my North Carolina history. Peasant farmers removed in the Scottish lowland clearances, getting their thatch roof houses burned to the ground. Moved to Down and Antrim and found no peace, basically living in exile. Moved to the Colonies, came through Philadelphia and settled in frontier providing a buffer between the native people and the wealthy English living closer to the Atlantic. Moved to Carolina and started the Revolution against the English. Moved to Alabama as squatters. Coerced again to fight a rich man's war between rich factory owners in the North and rich land owners in the South. Fighting the same Irish Catholics they were encouraged to fight in Northern Ireland. Survived and never brought up that damned war to their offspring. Celebrated 4th of July in 1866 calling a huge family reunion. Never looked back. But no one told me this. Later I learned I'm 70% Celtic and 1% African in my spit as are a lot of other Carolinians. In the 1%, there is East African hunter-gatherer and their Bantu Congolese speaking oppressor mixed and intertwined together. I also have English oppressor in my spit mixed with the Celtic. Who isn't a descendant of sin? Who isn't wearing clothes made by slave labor? Who wears the nickname "pimp" with pride? We Americans need to get over ourselves. We are the proudest country in human history. The world sees us all the same. Deserving. They're not impressed with our good intentions.

Great speech but I still don't agree with the removing. Those men should be honored for standing up for what they believed in, regardless if it was right or wrong. Even though you may disagree fundamentally, that is the most important lesson to teach. To fight for what you believe in. I'm proud that the colonists stood up against G.B. to start this country. If the Americans lost, we probably would have looked upon them as traitors as well. It's kinda funny cause I love the U.S.A just as much as i'm a proud Southern patriot. I respect the sacrifice that each side made for their families and citizens.

Robert E. Lee was a gentleman's gentleman. The North was the aggressor in the Civil War, and of course, they owned slaves! Grant had slaves throughout the war and was reluctant to set his slaves free after the war. Sherman also owned slaves and was a pyromaniac who burned Atlanta and committed other brutal acts! I WANT HIS STATUE REMOVED! The North did not wear a white hat and the South did not wear a black hat. It was the bloodiest war in history with good guys and bad guys on both sides. Taking down Southern monuments is denying my right to free speech. It is unconstitutional! I like what Judge Judy said about the law - "The law does not give a rat's ass about feelings!" The radical minority does not care about a 156-year-old CIvil War; they want black power and they are coming to everyone's neighborhood!

The confederates we're just as well entitled to those monuments as the federa troops are, they fought as ardent patriots against a government they found oppressive and in someways were. To sit and say they were the "bad guys" throughout the civil war is a sad representation of the horrors and evil of the civil war. There were no good guys, just look at Sherman's March to the Sea, tearing railroads, burning farms, stealing food, and valuables. Each side had their just causes, and each side had their, unjust beliefs. They were all equal patriots fighting for a better America, at a time when states rights over federal rights was the important thing.

"No refuge could save the hireling and SLAVE, from the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave..."
".....O'er the land of the FREE and home of the brave."
Colin Kaepernick's decision not to stand was met with a great deal of hostility towards his patriotism. But if you review the original version of the song, the "land of the free" was a wolf-in-sheets-clothing jab to the hireling/indentured servant/slave or however you want to dress it up.
The national anthem needs to be removed and replaced right along with these monuments...
    .....And Kaep deserves an apology....
1000 likes if you get it and want to see it changed...
1000 hates if you swallowed the blue pill....
