Imagine the mods you could do with that. You could put a huge rechargeable battery pack into it so it stays lit until the end of time. Great video though. I wondered why you put the shell back together prior to testing.
I think I have that same Helping Hands and if it is the same one I honestly don't blame you for not thinking about using it right away because it's not nearly as helpful as advertised. I have personally taken to using hemostats and sticky tack for almost all of my work holding.
You're practically guaranteed 5V with a USB plug. With a barrel jack, people will plug anything in that fits. I'm thinking USB removes the need for a 5V regulator to be installed and other protective components.
because you have like 5 USB C chargers around the house anyway that will work, your power bank can do the trick and we don't need 5 sizes of barrel chargers this way. I don't miss the days where one drawer in your house contained a collection of 50 different barrel chargers in 5 different sizes, all with varying voltage.
You're joking, right? For the one disadvantage of robustness, you still come-out way ahead by using a standardized, universal and ubiquitous power source. I honestly find your opinion a little baffling.
This repair was crying out for a conversion to a rechargeable light sign, so much room for a battery and charging module, Im sure you would have all the parts in a salvage bin you will have gathered from previous projects/ beyond economical repair etc.if you're like me.
I see Steve is using the new IPA AI. Rub it over the board a few times and it automatically adds missing solder for you. ̶s̶t̶u̶p̶i̶d̶ Clever IPA AI thing
In the end you won that is what matters sir and showing the world that things can be frustrating nice!, stupid light thing 🤨or is it just being Strange. Thanks, StezStix Fix?
Hay Steve we all get days like that but you got there in the end why do you put things back together then test it out l think you should try it first before putting it back together 😊
You are pretty solid at diagnosing and solving issue Steve, but a few thoughts on your soldering style: First, CLEAN YOUR TIP!!!! Frequently. Your know those stands with the brass scrub pad in them? That is the way, and perhaps consider one of those little containers of soldering tip refreshing from time to time. Second - you leave a LOT of carbon behind, what temp are you using? Perhaps experiment with a lower temp? Finally, tooth brushes are so much better at cleaning flux residue - nice stiff bristles. And finally, a question, what flux are you using, cause I need to get me some of that! Stay excellent, Steve!
@@yummyklown9226you'd also need CC1 and CC2 with a 5.1k resistor to ground to set the power supply to 5V, but even with that there are six pin USB C ports that are easily soldered by hand.
Hi mate, would you be interested in fixing a 2017 nividia controller that right joystick drifts? Would love to see if you can sort. Thanks in advance. Ian
I’m glad I caught your video. I just sat down to recollect my thoughts as I’ve been also having one of those days. I just spent 2 hours ripping my shop apart looking for my butane soldering iron which I’ve had been using for close to the past 10 years. I figured that’s ok, I have an extension cord I’ll just use the electric. Another hour later??? Can find it… Where do these things go? It’s driving me mad. Unfortunately for me,my boys have moved out of the house several years ago so I don’t even have anyone to blame😢,lol. Thanks for the vid and the smile, hopefully our day will turn around 👍
@StezStixFix ive got a sega mega drive im despite to fix its not getting any power do you have any idea whats causing it ive took it apart and the power wires look fine no damage or anything
Makes a change to see you fix something simple and you still made it look difficult 😁 For my devices that charge via USB, USB C , Micro USB ect I use the magnetic charge cables where a device end comes off. So my tablets, phone and PS4 controller has a small magnetic adapter plugged in and the charge cable clicks into place. This also saves ware on the port. Love your vids
Btw Stez, if you're a Bolton FC fan, I hope your next shite is a hedgehog, they let me down on both of my bets today, got beat at home by Carlisle, bunch of twonks :(
What is up with todays micro usb sockets, are they soldered with and to boards made from chinesium or is it just the poor quality lead free solder used today ? They break so easily, its not like a light up box is constantly being plugged in and unplugged all the time.
Whilst I love the retro gaming stuff I can't actually see myself getting something like that off eBay and having a go myself. However, the skills you've taught me are transferable and this kind of product is something I'd have a go at. Unless there's something retro that is a collectors item I can't see them being used. This, however, you have saved from landfill. A slightly more complicated port repair with a satisfying ending. Great work.
Lol, I think this is the first time I've seen you actually put the batteries in and not just make them magically insert themselves.
Yeah, thought I'd go a bit traditional on this one! 🤣
stretch out the video time for ad $$$
@@StezStixFixI'm surprised you didn't attempt to swap in a USB c port

I'm loving the magnetic power connectors you can get cheap, just drill a 6mm hole and solder the leads, no more plugging in and out.

I have been binge watching all your videos. top stuff.
was that melting plastic I saw at 5:02? The black bit in the bottom left of the port...
Great fix, I probably would have put the sign "upside down" for the thumbnail 😂
Love the channel mate you actually inspired me to start fixing electronics myself.
Quick question what thermal camera do you use?
Ohh my god you showed the secret of how the battery gets into the device it's unbelievable my mind is blown!
Nice job. But the one question remains: Why is something like a Stranger Things light thing even existing?
Making money.
You should see the amount of products (way more useless than this one e.g. Lots of kitchenware) tailored to Americans out there.
youve never seen fandom merch before? I'm certain you have, lol.
Why do adults play with miniature train sets?
because having a full scale train needs a hell lot of garden? 🤣😂
@@bufordmaddogtannen The key-word is "play".
I love this Stranger Things crossover
Would have liked to have seen a USB-C go on there. Those micro USBs need to go straight into the garbage as far as I'm concerned.
@3:30 screaming at the screen, “swap it to USB-C!”

hemostats are tragically under-rated tools, imo. i wouldn't be without them these days.
Nicely done Steve!
Love the music in this one
Very enlightening fix - Stupid Light
Good afternoon from Miami. Nice to see you again !
After watching hundreds of NF videos, its, well, tempting to watch this, errr, art?
It looks like a quallity product. I am sure the ST trademark holder know about this product and agreed with its manufacturing. :D
I'm surprised it doesn't say "Thinger Strangs" like t-shirts on AliExpress do.
An ordinary barrel jack would do the trick - I don't know why everything needs to be USB nowadays (regardless which type).

Thanks Chris, yeah it's pretty cool. Looks good in the dark! 👍
Very high tech.
Still one of the most entertaining fix-it presenters. Thanks Steve, please keep the videos coming!
This was a perfect candidate for modification. Better LEDs. Better circuit board.
Better still, just chuck it in the bin!
Bit of Flux would have helped do you think Steve?

Are you using lead free solder? Every time I use that stuff, it looks like crusty crap.
Such a fun video as always. I'm not sure this was worth all the effort though 😅
Maby you could have tried a USB-C port on instead as they are much more user friendly and you can plug those in blindfolded 😆.
I donno what you're talking about USB-C ports are far more difficult to install. They've got 24 pins compared to just 4 on Micro USB

Steve, you could've replaced with a type C port since you got enough room for it.
