    Hello Everyone! I just want to let you know that Apple's Thunderbolt Display doesn’t work with 12-inch MacBook’s USB-C port

    • @beeldenman

      Correct, since that is a USB-C port only, without Thunderbolt. Confusing isn't it?

    Great video! Thank You. I wasn't"t quite clear on why you needed the extra dongle, unless for just charging your MacBook. I chose to use the MagSafe charger to the fast charging power brick. It looks neater. To be clear, this monitor still looks great in 2023. I have it connected to my brand new M2 MacBook Air, running Mac OS Ventura. Using it as the primary monitor, with the MacBook keyboard and trackpad. I may pick up a USB mouse and keyboard, to use in clamshelll mode.

    If you plan to build a dual monitor setup with old Thunderbolt displays, you should take into account that the devices almost all have different brightness levels due to their age. Over the last few years I've had about 7 Thunderbolt displays and the brightness has been between 3,900 (almost yellow image) and 5,900 (pretty good white) lux. Apparently the displays burn out over the years depending on how heavily they're used. I measured 6,500 lux during the iMac 5K DIY monitor conversion.

  • @Hektormydog

    Just want to add for newer MBPs with the MagSafe, unfortunately, there is no older MagSafe on the TBD to MagSafe 3 adapter yet, and with low demand and I hear difficulty with the MSv3 engineering changes may not be. So an adapter, old MagSafe to USB-C adapter, or just use a power brick for your newer MBP.

The display I purchased was from FB marketplace. Although it looks to be in excellent condition , the seller didn’t have the original power cord. After researching ( someone correct me if I’m wrong ) it appears that you actually must use the original power cord due to electromagnetic measurement or something. So I’m going to see what happens. Then if exchanging the power cord, and plugging into the back of the display port doesn’t work, I’m going to update the firmware. I hope I can get it sorted out, I love this display!!!

      I had this issue: the hub adapter had two thunderbolt- I use one for external monitors 4K and second won’t charge. I bought a different hub which was less complicated and both worked fine. Weird but I think it depends on the adapter now that technology is finding solutions to previous problems.

    Yours is the only video I have seen which has showed the back of the iMac so thank you! I can see now why I couldn't get this connection set up at my end. For some weird reason, my 2017 iMac doesn't have the thunderbolt socket at the back of my iMac so I couldn't use the thunderbolt cable :( I wonder why this is the case on mine

    • @larryFWD
      @larryFWD 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yvetteochoa9289 No, I've now returned the thunderbolt cable and adapter after speaking with apple Support a couple of days ago. They told me that iMacs from I think 2017 no longer have the ability to be used as a second display which is a bummer, because one of the main reasons I bought both iMac and MBP is to set up an Extended display workflow :( newer iMacs apparently have had those thunderbolt ports discontinued and replaced solely with USB-C ones, and even if one gets the right cable, Apple has removed the target display application that allows the screens to be extended.
      Apple told me that the options I have is to either get an older iMac or buy a third party Monitor. Technology should be an advancement not backward. Apple fails on this one, for the disadvantage it puts on "newer" iMacs :/

      @@larryFWD oh my gosh I totally feel you! I talked to Apple too and they said it was not possible but I just felt like they said that because it’s not possible with “Apple products” because there is no such product they sell to help but I feel like other companies have the tools to use both as a dual monitor. I too bought my iMac thinking it would help me but if it doesn’t it’s a waste for me.

I use a MacBook (2017) connected with the local adapter and cable (not the Apple Thunderbolt) to an iMac 27" late 2013, i do not get the screen from the MacBook to share on the iMac. . Is it necessary to use Apple Thunderbolt Wires or should I need to downgrade my iMac OS . Please help.

      or this Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable : amzn.to/2Uixr3w

      Yes, you can use a TB2 cable from the back output to the 2-3 adapter, some have found the built-in TB cable degraded and not usable, and rather than take the glass off and repair this works
