IMO this would’ve been an impressive release seven years ago. Honestly just seems like they’re trying to dump overstock of old, unloved parts that are laying around in 5k iMac panels and old iPhone chips. It’s a downgrade in many ways apart from the panel itself, and it’s actually not as hard as you might think to upgrade the Thunderbolt Display with a 5k iMac panel. Hell for the price you could just get a 5k iMac and get a bonus computer with your display purchase

    • @dmitryclarke2127

@@dmitryclarke2127 2-300$ depending on sourcing, and they're close enough that a decent number of people have posted build guides for them online in quite a few places. That's not the only cost associated of course, and it's not something I'd recommend to someone who isn't tech savvy, but it's certainly doable, and definitely for far less than they're charging for the studio. Many designs even preserve the microphone, speakers, USBs and such. The only non-salvageable bit is the original charger, which typically goes unused since magsafe 1 has been deprecated for a great many years now.

Both beautiful for their times & I am still using mine. The 30" Cinema only had 400 cd/m2 but looks amazing bright to the Thunderbolt side by side. If you plan to build a dual monitor setup with old Thunderbolt displays, you should take into account that the devices almost all have different brightness levels due to their age. Over the last few years I've had about 7 Thunderbolt displays and the brightness has been between 3,900 (almost yellow image) and 5,900 (pretty good white) lux. Apparently the displays burn out over the years depending on how heavily they're used. I measured 6,500 lux during the iMac 5K DIY monitor conversion.

Thunderbolt is 27" 1440P which is 108 PPI. Macs work much better with 110 or 220 (retina) ppi. So 3 best options are 1440p 27" , 34" 3440x1440p, and 5k 27". Unless money is no object, there is little to no reason to upgrade to a $1,600 studio in 2023. And picking up a Thunderbolt off facebook in 2023 for $100-$200 is great option vs $200 monitor for productivity use (non gamers).

My 2013 15" MBP finally broke (screen) and I just upgraded to a 16" MBP M1 Pro. I'm using it right now with my 27" Thunderbolt Display and loving it, thanks in huge part to the Thunderbolt 2 port that Thunderbolt 3/4 is backwards compatible with. Good thing because those USB 2.0 ports are almost useless, and FW800 is also an extinct dinosaur.
My new MBP has 1 TB of storage. I do photography, so my lightroom catalog is kept in an OWC Thunderbay 4 Mini with 4x 1 TB 2.5" SSDs in a RAID 0 configuration. That in turn is backed up to an OWC Thunderbay 4 with full size HDDs. Both are daisy-chained off the Thunderbolt Display.
I have a WD 4 TB external HDD attached to the back of the display for Time Machine backups. Of course, the first backup I had to directly attach the drive to the MBP, otherwise it would have taken days/weeks to do it over USB 2.0. I also have a 1 TB NVMe SSD in an enclosure for backups as well that I can bring with me when I travel and that gets updated every few days whenever I connect it to the MBP. Finally, I have a 3rd Time Machine backup in my Apple Time Capsule. I upgraded the 500GB drive to 2 TB.
To power the MBP, I'm actually using a MagSafe 1/2 to USB-C adapter I got on Amazon. It only provides 45 watts, I've seen another similar one that does 60 watts. Either way, the M1 Pro sips power so the 45 watts is plenty enough to keep it charged. I really wish someone comes out with a MagSafe 1/2 to MagSafe 3 adapter sooner than later so I can use MagSafe and regain a USB-C port.

Studio Display sits too high - and the variable height option has NO option to lower the height - it only goes upwards. Design fail. 60Hz refresh rate is too slow. And the hole in the stand is visible from the front. No Thunderbolt 4?

Andrew, coincidentally I have on the right side of my desk the new Studio Display connected to my MacBook Pro 14 and on the left the older Apple A1316 Cinema 27 Display as it can connect to PC's too and it's connected my work PC laptop. I tested the Studio Display to my work PC which has a USB-C connection and everything works on the monitor except for adjusting brightness of course. So soon, I will hand the the old faithful Cinema Display to the kids and get another Studio Display for a matching set up. I hope though they give us a software or Firmware update to improve the camera as they are lacking a little right now and I am still having to use my Logitech Brio Webcam. You can't go wrong with Apple Display's for aesthetics and built quality, I love them and I will never buy any other brand. The speakers on the Studio Display have to be best on the market in any monitor out there. Maybe Apple needs to get in the pro speaker business.
