Absolutely wonderful rendition of this piece. The beautiful sound of the organ played by such a talented organist is food for the soul.

I really don't know how it took me so long to discover Leo van Doeselaar. He might be the best Bach interpreter I've heard play.

Who needs a gymnasium when you have organ keyboards to tickle? Wonderful stuff as always from this master organist.

I was surprised by this Bach work two ways...the playing and phrasing is excellent AND I have never seen this instrument in it's completed state. I saw for many years just the Rückpositiv all lonely on the Organ balcony. I had no idea that the remaining case and parts were completed. It is a remarkably modern/ancient case with unparalleled workmanship by Flentrop and company. It sounds very cohesive regardless of the provenance of the 500 or so pipes that were found after the destruction of the Church and it's fittings.

You say, "I was surprised by this Bach work two ways," but you never explain. The rest of your comment is a long digression into matters that have absolutely nothing to do with the Bach work itself.

@@herrickinman9303 The two surprises were the Organ itself, and the completion of the installation - I have seen the Rückpositiv for many years all by itself ,and did not realize that the remainder of the instrument would be installed . The second was the performance - which was outstanding.

Do not mean to disrespect Bach's memory, neither offend anyone's belief. But at certain passages, particularly after 1:55, BWV 665 evokes strong impressions of a haunted fairground - Tod Browning meets The Stranglers. Just saying.

I was thinking the same! There is so much dissonance and chromatic movements. To be completely honest, when I first tried playing this piece I doubted whether this was really Bach.

Bach is "tonepainting" the words of this congregational hymn or "chorale as it's called in the Lutheran tradition.
It's all in the title of the hymn: Jesus Christ our Savior, who through his bitter suffering overcame death. It's an Easter season song that covers the darker aspect of what theologians call "Jesus's passion" which interrogations, mocking, shoving around, pushing a crown of thorns torture lasted a whole week with probably no sleep, and with the steady abandonment of anyone he called friend during his 33 years on this planet. This earthball full of civilized Sapiens (ha not ha). But listen a little harder during the last 1.5 mins. Bach makes Jesus win. The darkness has not disappeared, but a strong Light pierces thru that mess. It was Bach's deep personal belief that of course "life can be like a diaper, total beschissen." A once and current German expression; the original 2 words are not hard to figure out😁. BUT he once and for all decided that there was nobody better than Jesus to lead the charge when some people refuse to be sucked in and overcome by the usual-suspects and the usual dirty trix. Not look left or right and refuse ever to even touch that Scheisse. Not notice it. Not acknowledge it. Not gossip about it. I have had the privilege of knowing a few of these stubborn, good-humored, cheerful, keep-on-workin-it'll turn out okay. But not without some scary Sxxxxxt going down sometimes. My ma got snippy with with me when post-30 I'd come complaining about messed up whatever; she'd say: "Whatever happens you can count on the sun coming up tomorrow morning. Now that's good religion and not the "religion" that dishonors that torture the Prince of Peace put out there for everyone to see for what it is. Bullshite! And the whole thing screams "The Way thru life I showed you has demands and requirements that'll take all you got. But compared to all the 'yokes' out there mine is the easiest and maybe even the most fun when you look back." The scrappy boy Bach was definitely like this. I'm kinda inventing his motto: "Yeah I might look the "Schxzz" in the face, battle it, bluntly call the cheaters on their sweet little lies, blabla. But shoot me at sunrise if I ever cross one inch over to the Darkside."
Highest respect to Johhnny more for that demonstration of the better side of fallible "Sapiens," than for the thousands of notes he wrote down, where nothing is ever out of place.
Maybe this helps in some way? Idk. Mark (Arizona usa)
