Im 64 years old. Ive smoked since i was 12. Cigars and pipes. Today im primarily a pipe smoker. I usually invest in estate pipes. High end stuff. Great hobby, restoring them.
Great video! I came to a very similar realization when I started pipe smoking. Here are 3 bonus points from me: 1.) Maintenance: Pipe tobacco is way easier to store than cigars 2.) Flavor variety: I feel like pipe tobacco generally offers a wider range of experiences blend to blend than cigars 3.) Room note: I can smoke pipes in the house and everyone loves the smell. Not true with cigars 😅
I like pipes. They're aesthetic, intellectual and complex. You can pass them on to your children. Tobacco options are infinite, and you can even grow your own tobacco. There's something smart and astute about pipes. I do enjoy cigarillos, but they only offer a quick ten-minute smoke, but the occasional cigar flavor you don't get in pipes is nice. I have six pipes (currently) all crafted by professionals in different countries, no China stuff.
There is something about dedicated time for a cigar. No phone... nothing to distract you. But I do love a pipe as well for all those reasons. Great video.
I enjoy my pipe when I’m alone, with just a few friends, & I’m being contemplative. I like a cigar in more social situations, where I can just light it & don’t have to tend to it. A pipe requires more constant attention from me.
Love your points on why pipe tobacco is better than cigars! I’d also like to mention: -room note with pipe tobacco is better -more American brands/blends -tobacco cellaring is easier. No need humidifier -bulk buys can easily turn into aging/cellaring My only issues with pipe tobacco is -need more than one pipe for ghosting and if you want multiple bowls in a day (I still smoke one pipe twice if I really want to) -ease of transporting pipe, loose tobacco, and tamper compared to cigars
Thank you! This was actually part two! The cigar version is already up and published: th-cam.com/video/0wt-iH4qkgs/w-d-xo.html Haha, keep in mind I love both forms of tobacco, and these videos were meant to be fun and an element of satire. Though, I think the main reason cigars are more popular are just ease and convenience.
@TimberSmokeCo thought you did one, and I did a quick search and didn't see it so thanks. I agree about the convenience, it's just grab and go. I saw the whole video and got the disclaimer but I wouldn't care anyway, I just love tobacco in general. Great content.
I've found that in a .75"x1.5" bowl, an once of tobacco gives you 8 to 10 smokes (8.5 average) depending on cut, moisture, etc... One of the most expensive pipe tobaccos here in the U.S. is Capstan, which msrp's at $27.77 per tin, or $15.87 per oz. Or about $1.87 per smoke. My favorite cigar is around $9 a stick, which is about 5 smokes of Capstan. Yeah, pipe smoking is more bang for your buck 🤠
I smoke both pipes and cigars. I go through phases where I'll prefer Pipes vs. Cigars and Vise versa. I live in Las Vegas, and I don't have a local shop for cigars, so I shop online, and I pay an average of $4 per stick. I have 100 cigar humidor that's full, and I have a cabinet that's full of jarred pipe tobacco. In those jarred tobaccos are 2 blends from Watch City Cigar, Old Dominion, and Ahabs Comfort. As a real man, I don't have to pick one. 😂
Agree with nearly all of your points. However, I often stop smoking partially thru a cigar. I just lightly tamp it out. I always intend to finish the day but have gone two days. I can’t taste much if any degradation in the flavor of the tobacco. I’m am referring to premium cigars. I just cannot waste good Tobacco. I totally enjoy pipes and cigars but find my pipe to be part of my daily ritual.
Also so many more blends, flavor choices with the pipe. Cigars are all more or less similar flavor profiles. Pipers can choose Virginia, English, burley, aromatic. So much more variety.
Have you heard of the Stillwell Star cigars? Jeremy Reeves from C&D actually helped create the blends and they are made from pipe tobacco leaves (Virginia, Perique, Latakia, etc.) Expect to see those on the channel soon. But, pretty cool for someone who enjoys pipe tobacco more than cigar leaf
All that and the ritual of breaking tobacco, packing, tamping, puffing, dumping, can’t be beaten. I’m now paying around 50$ US per tin in Canada if you include the taxes, and I could actually get 30 low end but decent quality cigars (backwoods) for that price, cheaper, but I still prefer a pipe.
@@TheNewMediaoftheDawn Oof. It is easy for those of us in the states to forget many fellow smokers are paying those kind of prices, and a good reminder to be thankful for what we have here. Although if I were in your shoes, I’d prefer the pipe but be smoking more backwoods 😂
Aye. In England I pay an average of £20 for a 50gram tin or pouch. Depending whether it's Flake or Ribbon cut, the size of my bowl, and how full I want to fill the bowl - I'll get about 25 to 33 bowls from 50 grams of Baccy. Now, if I want a Cigar, a New World that I like will cost me £15 to £25 per Cigar; if I want a Cuban I'm paying £25 to £35 per Cigar. I like my Cigars, but I'm a dead-to-rights daily lifestyle Pipe Smoker, on average I smoke 6 bowls a day, and all for 30% ish the cost of single cigar. As nice as the Cigar Tobacco is - the range of quality of Pipe tobacco is far superior. All the Cigars I choose to smoke are all in the same taste spectrum. But my Pipe Tobacco that I smoke on the daily: S. Gawith Full Virginia, S. Gawith Balkan Flake, S. Gawith Skiff Mixture are as different from one to the other as Stout and Lager. All the best.
To me, Pipe tobacco blends are superior over cigars in smell, flavor, and cost. Cigars are much more convenient to smoke and are more accepted socially. A young guy with a pipe is often immediately accused of being a hipster out of ignorance.
WCC Nor'easter, Old Black Magic, and Persian Slipper are all fantastic. I have a humidor with some nice cigars...but pipe tobacco also stores way easier in mason jars than cigars in a humidor.
My pipes are like an old friend. When you are through with a cigar you throw it away. When through with a pipe you put it away till the next time. For those who want a cigar favor try Tascono pipe tobacco. By the way I subbed your channel. Press on 😊
My favorite cigar right now is RP white label, and my favorite tobacco is Peterson EMP, one is $18 and one tin is $13. You can imagine which one is more cost effective. My favorite pipe, a dunhil county is about $450 though, my radice magnum was $350. I think both are enjoyable and both can be very expensive.
@ Could be. I’m fairly new to pipe smoking though I suspect I don’t have the sort of palate that can taste mild flavours. I am still trying to figure out what kinds of tobacco blends I like best.
Pipes are vinyl records and cigars are cds. Both offer a great listening experience. One is more hands on and incorporates a lot of outside factors that can make the experience bad or great the other is primarily straightforward. I’m a cd guy 😉. I’ve mastered cigar smoking. Pipes are something I love the idea of and have tried but those outside factors? Are too much for my lack of patience That and honestly a well aged cigar tobacco masterfully rolled? Too hard to beat On a side note the rivalry between the two is honestly pretty big. I personally never understood it. The cost is much heavier up front with a pipe. You don’t need 1000 dollar blow fish to start pipe smoking but you still honestly need a good pipe. A cheap one will definitely be frustrating to start with. That being said once you get the pipe that the tobacco is much cheaper and will go longer unless you just buy old rare aged tins.
True! A good hand rolled cigar is tough to beat. I agree on the rivalry. It's pretty funny too because a lot of pipe smokers (including myself) love cigars too lol. From a cultural and political front as well, we're all fighting the same battles! Perhaps one day we'll be united under the banner of premium tobacco enthusiasts lol
@ The rich history, the amount of care and craftsmanship that goes on to cigars, the flavors are more pleasing to my palate. For me pipes are a solitary pleasure while cigars are that as well as a good thing to do with others. I like the simplicity of cut, light and enjoy over the fiddliness of pipes. No rub out, dry pack light tamp relight etc . I can enjoy that sometimes but mostly the simple quality time of cigars is my favorite. All that said, with premium tobacco of both types fighting for its life in the west we really need to support both pursuits even if we only prefer one over the other exclusively. My opinion of course
I smoke pipe tobacco and cigars. But I buy cigar leaf by the pound and roll my own cigars. My rolled cigars average about $1.50 a stick and they're equivalent to my favorite $15 store bought cigar.
That’s rare though and a bit of work, but I could see more doing it, as whole leaf is easier to get now online and less regulated too, and yes WAY cheaper!
I started with cigars 20 years ago, 10 years ago I started pipe smoking, I still do cigars once in a while but I’m now a pipe smoker at heart. Also you smoke one cigar, you’ve also smoked them all. The difference between one cigar and another is like the difference between 5:30 and 5:45, and all the cigar reviewers are so full of it, every cigar review is pretty much the same. Pipe tobacco on the other hand has a much much bigger spectrum of flavor. Happy smokes !
I do enjoy cigars and smoke one or two a week. However, my palette is very unrefined so they really do all taste pretty much the same to me at the moment! Thanks for watching and happy smokes!
I smoked cigars for over 20 years. The fact is that pipe tobacco provides infinitely more variation of tobacco flavor options than cigars. The best cigars are cost prohibitive today, including the best Cubans which in my opinion are the best cigars in the world. There is no point in smoking so so cigars.
Cigars are the opposite of one sided , i do not agree with you point at all here. Yes cigars are only tobacco but its a blend , you have the wrapper which gives it a character then you have the binder that gives you hints of flavors and then you have the filler which provides most of the flavor, but not only that, thanks to masterful craftsmanship and knowledge of cigar making we can enjoy a certain flavor in the first third of the cigar and it evolves to something different in the second third and it comes to a resolution in the final third, and that brings me to the point why you would want to sit and enjoy a whole cigar so you can appreciate the changes in notes and flavors, but you can definitely leave a cigar out and come back and re lite it , i do it all the time without any issue , same as with pipe.
