Hi Richard, I have smoked a pipe for more than 32 years. I've tried many types of tobacco but finally settled on Dunhill deluxe navy rolls. Now known as Petersons deluxe navy rolls. It's been a consistent type , earthy, deep and sweet..
That is lovely tobacco. A rich figgy aroma when you break the seal on the tin, attractive and unusual presentation with the slices of rolled leaves, and a very nice smoke too. I’m enjoying another Peterson Virginia blend at the moment, I can’t remember the name right now though. The only thing is that it requires plenty of rolling before packing your pipe to eliminate any clumps of tobacco that don’t burn so well.
Hiyas Richard, I've smoked a pipe for 52 years now, man and boy. Some tobaccos satisfy and some just don't hit the mark. It's a process of trial and error until you land on a type that you like. I will also add that tastes do change over time; if you put away the St Bruno ( a lovely blend) and come back to it in a year or so, you may have a completely different experience. Piping is a journey of discovery and rejection, enjoy the ride Serene smokes Gary
Sit, think, pause. Yep. My tobacco doesn't taste bad, it just tastes like smoke. I don't smoke a pipe for the taste, I smoke it to sit, think, and pause. The tamping, re-lighting, etc., is all part of the slowing down. (It's better than watching TV after work.)
When I have lost taste with smoking, which I have had before, inhaling a little up the nose with each intake - I find this kickstarts and re-calibrates my mouth taste. Also, everyone out there, if you have any small garden, tobacco plants grow well with no direct sun - given it's unlikely we'll be seeing the sun. Buy seeds online, start indoors in feb ready to plant out when frost has gone. Virginia Gold makes very easy golden bright cigarette feel rollups. Top leaves make beautiful sour cigarillos.
my dad smoked a pipe all his life (passed away at 85yrs) he once tried to give it up but soon hit the bed feeling sick, the doctor told him to go back on the pipe,he did'nt take much persuading,i liked the aroma of whisky flake.
I also had this lurgy or whatever most of December. Smoked my first bowlful in weeks today. I am currently working my way through an amalgam of leftovers from various tobacco samplers. Some of the tobacco was a little dry but I rehydrated it and it has been surprisingly flavourful. I started my pipe smoking adventures on Aromatics but as I learned to smoke I moved over to more traditional blends. It is a wonderful hobby. I can only smoke outdoors hence why the layoff.
Hi Richard. I’m glad you are on the mend. Sometimes bugs can mess with your taste and certain blends can taste foul. Also tastes change throughout your journey, so don’t bin them, pop them in an airtight jar and leave them for a bit. I too used to get that sweaty sock taste from Saint Bruno and i think it’s the topping with the burley. I’m not a burley lover.
Thank you for the update, I hope you feel better and get you pipe taste back…. There are blends that I love and a handful that burn my mouth even after many tries. A book sounds dreamy….
I'm glad to hear that you and the lovely Julia are feeling better. I, at this present time only have 2 briar pipes, for some reason the same tobacco can taste completely different in either of them, also when they are packed differently, I have found that slowly drawing with aromatics can leave a more flavoursome taste on the tongue, with the bowl staying cooler. I recently bought some Clan, and was highly disappointed with it, 19 different tobaccos blended together, unfortunately I could taste the Latakia in it, which I feel smells too much like a bonfire, but that's me and my personal taste. I have just acquired a tin of Petersons Connemara Black (Black Cherry flavour), it seems quite dry compared to Gawith and Hoggarth BC, but I like both, both of which are Black Cavendish, which seems to give a smoother smoke in my humble opinion. Happy Smoking Richard.
My wife and I had some sort of sickness during Christmas in 2023 and I had the same problem with loosing my tobacco pallet. EVERYTHING I smoked whether in pipe or cigar tasted exactly the same, like singed hair. My smoking taste has slowly returned and has just now, a year later, been completely restored.
May i suggest the oldest pipemakers in the world i have the same Peterson pipe i have used for years i have a few other makes but i always return to Peterson thats a real pipe get a mid range one no need for vast expense try a Peterson from Dublin you wont be disappointed i guarantee you😊
I, too, had the dreaded lurgi over Christmas 😱 Glad you're feeling better. St Bruno isn't for everyone. It was one of the first tobaccos I tried. I didn't like it then, and I don't like it now. Try Peterson Nightcap or Sweet Killarney. They are my two favourites. “A pipe gives a wise man time to think, and a fool something to stick in his mouth” - C.S. Lewis
You have such a calming voice. I enjoy watching your videos. I did buy that "Smoke Screens" book. Very interesting and informative read. Every smoker should read that. I agree that sitting and taking the time to smoke a pipe is very relaxing and contemplative. Hope you feel better and thanks for the video.
Your considerations re book writing is brilliant - I’m of a mind now too, to also label mine, when that moment happens, as ‘fiction’. Everything is subjective…. Thank you 😊 and Happy New Year xx ps: I don’t smoke but I love the atmosphere of old books housed within a heavily cedar timbered library with a whiff of cigar or pipe smoke wafting about….!! Glorious!!
Hello! Leave the tobacco alone for a month and than try again. Sometimes it ´s like a wonder..... Greetings from Hamburg! Ach ja, I wish you and youre lovely lady a happy new year!
I'm not keen on the St Bruno either and losing a significant sense of taste/smell didn't improve that. It was heart breaking to see you so disappointed with pipe smoking when you usually enjoy it so much 💚💙💜
Being new to pipe smoking (and loving your channels) I bought 12.5g of St Bruno for nostalgic reasons! I've yet to try it, but I'm hoping to reproduce the affection I had in our old pub during the 70s😉 Wish me luck and KTF 🙏
Richard, I enjoyed your views on reading and the taking on of the pipe. At times it does make a difference to set aside a tobacco for a while then try again. Not all tobaccos are for all people, the fun is finding the tobaccos for you. Ron
Me and my family came down with the same christmas cold, still recovering now. Still smoked my pipe though even when i could hardly breathe through my nose but yes a cold takes the taste away from your tobacco, dont stress about it it will come back in a while and you'll enjoy these blends again. Ive seen some people put the pipe down through a prolonged cold and never pick it back up again which is a shame, just smoke your pipe and it will all come back soon enough
I was the same sick during Christmas. Once smoked my pipe. All tubes cleared up at once. It was a great feeling in the middle of the worse. Of course sickness came back later, but what a release!
Yikes! What illness!...hope to never catch whatever it was. As for bad baccy...me personally I've taken note the ones that did not agree with me and the time of year I first tried. What seemed to taste awful in the summer actually wasn't that bad in the winter cold and vice versa. But that's me. Fully on board with your assessment of fast pace life v. slowing the f**k down. It truly is the whole idea with the pipe (and cigar) its ritual the deep contemplating the welcoming of the muse etc... a lost art held dear by those who set foot against the grain. Looking fwd to your book! Cheers to you and hope your health continues to improve! 🤘😔🎸
I tried the St. Bruno after your video. I have just thrown out three quarters of it. I am sticking with 'contemplation' which I know I like .Get well soon Both.
After I had the nasty virus about two years ago- chocolate tasted unpleasant. Oily, sweet, dirt is what it tasted like. Part of that probably to do with what is considered “chocolate” in the United States. Anyway, I decided to gamble and I picked up Samuel and Gawith’s Bob’s Chocolate Flake. I tasted true chocolate again with vanilla and a smokiness like a campfire. It was so delightful. The tin didn’t last a month. 😂
Please try Rattrays Old Gowrie or Hal O' The Wynd, you will not be disappointed. I took a gamble on them as i usually only go for dark flake-type things and it paid off so i stocked up on both.
I had an issue similar. I love emp, and squadron leader. But like you i got ill, and it was the worst tasting and smelling to me. All i wanted was to enjoy a smoke after a month or ao of feeling ill. I tried again the other day and atill not tasting great though others do.
I'm enjoying Rattrays Stirling Flake at the moment, I do like very strong tobaccos though. When I want a light smoke, I reach for Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader, it's sweet and light but still has a complex flavour profile.
I was ill over Christmas, didn't eat for 2 days, took some ivm, I am sure it helped, I was fully recovered in a week. I didn't lose my taste but the filtered water I drink tasted bitter while it normally tastes sweet, I was glad when it tasted sweet again. I have you thought of growing your own tobacco?
FYI, I was ill with "flu" like symptoms, someone in chat recommended taking colloidal silver but I only had colloidal gold, I took some colloidal gold and it helped A LOT. I also had a hot water bottle on my back and 1 on my chest to help clear the phlegm, I can 100% recommend doing this 👍🙏❤
One American study on pipe smoking found there had never been a pipe smoker on death row…..says it all about the benefits of pipe smoking 😀 ps you should have an author style pipe to help your writing!
Well after 40 + years of smoking i got up new years day and just stopped, not planned just got the urge to stop. Im only on day five but can honestly say i will never smoke again. I feel great, not that i felt bad when i did smoke but i feel a much better energy about myself. Ive never been ill and ive never seen a doctor and im 56 next month. It be interesting to see how things pan out as i go on.
Put that tobacco in a jar and try it again in 6 months and then a year. If it is still not liking, try to mix it with a really strong and can mellow it. 😊
Hi Richard. Have you ever seen Malcolm Guites channel? He's been saying a lot of the same things in regards to pipe smoking and if my memory serves me right, he too mentioned about writing the pipe.🤪

I’ve only today had my first bowl of 2025 having also had a dose of ‘man flu’! One of the great things about pipe smoking is you can put it down for as many days or weeks as you choose and take it back up again just as readily. Whilst I’ve certainly missed being without it I haven’t craved it like someone addicted to cigarettes! Yet another distinction between cigarettes and pipes but a distinction not recognised by the so called health professionals who lump all ‘smokers’ together in the same category. St Bruno is now one of my go to blends even though as a new pipe smoker I didn’t get on with it. I’d be happy to take it off your hands if you need a favour 😉. Happy new year.
Actually, Richard has seen Jesus ☝️🔭🙄 . the fog story was exactly just that.. Matthew 10 : 1-8 .. ... is what matters . don't sweat the small stuff... this is much bigger than a fog machine on the dancefloor.. at the disco.
I’d encourage you to not get rid of the blends you currently dislike. I’ve found that when I don’t like a blend if I come back to it months later I like it. Or you can trade it to someone else so you can try something they have.
Get a wholefood derived zinc supplement. Take twice a daily recommendation for a couple weeks and same for copper but only twice a week. Smoking burns a lot of vitamins and minerals
I’m sorry that you were sick. Do some research on smoking (inhaling) dried mullein leaves. It is a fantastic expectorant and has all kinds of great medicinal properties to clear your lungs out. Also, I have a fantastic interview that talks about the benefits of nicotine. If you could give me your email, I can send that to you. I do not think I can send it in this comment box. Have a blessed week, my friend.
I imagine you lost your sense of smell and taste from being sick. I remember this happening when I was little and would get sick with a fever. I think the fever does it.
Reading, but which book? As a pipe smoker and conspiracy theorist, I recommend the holy Bible, which book will uniquely reveal the truth. How odd that so few UK truthers will read it through even once.
I believe the flu you had was a purge. The body probably 'gives up' taste to force a fast and an abstinence from the smoking. I would say use gums or nicotine pills for awhile. Your lungs need to get rid of all the other gunk and also, the smoking is very drying, so that would slow down the purging. Not a smoker, but I have lived with many smokers all my life and observed the patterns.
Tobacco in its natural form is anti-estrogenic. It is interesting when I observe men who smoke pipes how much more masculine they look, because they haven't been exposed to too much of the female estrogen. Mind you, there are other anti-estrogenics in food so there are options.
Personally, I'm a bit skeptical on your take that pipe smoking aids critical thinking. From my own experience as a (reluctant) cigarette smoker I can testify that, if anything, the act of smoking is a hindrance to any kind of clear thought. Anyway, wishing you and 'the lovely Julia' a very healthy and happy new year!
I love people who smoke tobacco and then feel the desperate compulsion to perform mental gymnastics to try and blame their resulting respitory ailments on anything at all except tobacco being basically a concentrated mixture of various highly toxic compounds. Cognitive dissonance at its finest.
Perhaps you suddenly don't like your tobacco because of your cold ? The taste buds usually take a while to recover. Pipe tobacco is never going to be as cheap as it is today so I have started to build up my cellar. Peterson's my mixture 965 and Rattrays Red Raparee are amongst my favourites. Red Rapparee of my favo

I love D.N.R. It really gets better after years of ageing. You know you don't have to settle on one baccy, right? 😉

Nicotine really doesn't disrupt those things you seem to think it does.

Cigarette smoking is designed for a quick nicotine hit. Pipe Smoking is the complete opposite.
I can't do the pipe thing, my choice is more of a patch, doesn't involve taste but they do clear my brain fog.
i dont smoke
I love people who smoke tobacco and then feel the desperate compulsion to perform mental gymnastics to try and blame their resulting respitory ailments on anything at all except tobacco being basically a concentrated mixture of various highly toxic compounds. Cognitive dissonance at its finest.
I love people that blab their mouth even though they're a total idiot that has no idea what they are talking about. 🤡
I am smoking a blend of both sativa and indica and i must say I'm enjoying it immensely. 🥴
Last time I had Covid I lost my taste for 7 days, didn’t smoke at all because it was just a waste? Take some time off
