    Great Video man! As a refrigeration mechanic i hear "Oh it just needs a little freon" on the daily lol. Most times its just a simple electrical issue

    You are very knowledgeable but you seem to allow the stage you're on (the internet) dictate you're delivery. Don't worry about and please stop giving into negative comments and people in general. I learned a lot from whatching this video.I had to rewind a few parts due to your "typical hack" comments. My word to you is if you are sharing knowledge do so without the bitter shade throwing. In this world no one knows it all however, all of our knowledge together can move mountains. Thanks again for the informative vídeo.

    Matt, just ignore the trolls and haters. By spending so much of -your- our time responding to trolls on followup videos, you're letting them plan the agenda for future recordings. Most of us don't need to hear it, and your videos will be faster, cleaner and better.

      Using logic then brain contrary to your average mechanic love your video. I can’t believe how many thumbs down you got now we know exactly how many monkeys are out there. 👍
      I could tell you’re really frustrated and have no patience with how much idiot repairs you see an air-conditioning on TH-cam it shows, me too !. Some of my videos about air-conditioning I talked to same way in frustration at the idiots and monkeys that you do.

    I gotta say... People are so freaking sensitive and they're getting free information, wtf, they should be happy for someone who is a professional giving them free information. They shouldn't be a mechanic or work in any shop, they'd be crying in a corner somewhere!

    I think your video would be much more effective by just telling us what and how you'd check and leave out all the sarcasm and criticisms of DIY'ers. We know we are amatures but like tinkering, saving money, and the feeling we've accomplished something.

By making a point of everything that people might say and will say just eats away at what could be an informative and extremely confident approach.       Especially cars from the 90's (like mine) that are now 20+ years old. Resistors and relays have been baked for decades and fail....wiring gets brittle and fails.

    Thank you so much for posting this video. I noticed last spring that my ac stopped working in my Nissan Xterra. I went a whole year thinking it was going to be an expensive fix. You helped me trouble shoot it. I first noticed the clutch was not coming on. I got my voltmeter and was about to try to chase down the issue, when i noticed that the AC compressor wasn't even plugged in. I plugged it in and BAM!! AC works perfect! I don't know if a mechanic just forgot to plug it in after doing other work on the engine, or if it was intentional. I hope it was not the latter.

    I have also used the Devo Diagnostic Technique (DDT) as a problem solving guide for automotive issues. Nice success on the repair Matt

      The DDT helped me to. Cranking, no start, so I proceeded to "crack that whip". It worked...lol.

    Thanks for showing me your isolation technique. I actually had corrosion on that plug above the clutch. Fixed now.

      I actually followed this technique in a similar fashion in my newly acquired 2001 Chevy trail blazer with the 4.3. You seemed to have almost the exact same vehicle or at least same looking engine. I have the exact same electrical issue. Previous owner told me it was low on pressure and needed to add some but I had to test all the connectors just to make myself content with that call. Unfortunately, I have three same issue as no power at all 0.00 volts going to the clutch. I had power at the low pressure switches. All my fixes and relays work properly. The pebbled now like he just confirmed for me is there's going to be a break somewhere and that's not going to be easy to find. I almost wish it was only a guide or relay.

    I have a 2002 Mazda protégé. I'm now on a fixed income and have to do all work on my car myself. Thank God for TH-cam. My heater works but not the air-conditioner. The speed switch only works on 4 now, but I noticed that only one pully turns on the compressor/motor. I'm not sure what it is. What do I do to fix my air-conditioner. Watching your video, I guess it's the clutch pull only one turns.

    Please answer this: So how did a wire get *cut* "while sitting at a stoplight"? Sounds and smells to me. I retired from the "repair" market years ago- for reasons of cheap, stupid people wanting free work- or trying to haggle my worth, or just plain lying to my face. I don't blame you one bit.

      Because, as was mentioned twice in the video quite clearly and also shown on my other video, it was an improperly done butt connection from a previous repair.
      I have seen this countless times- clean wire breaks like that at terms and connections. If you do this work with any regularity you will see this very often.
      If you really were in the repair market you would have seen this as well countless times.

      Schrodingers Box Yes- in 10 years I saw a few "repairs" that were done before they came into the Shop. Always fun- to hear the stories about who, what, and why. Bird's nests of bread twisters, paper masking tape, Duct tape, Scotch tape, bailing wire.
      I did hear you mention it looked like a Butt connector might have been used, and had simply broken at the improperly deep cut strip- but there was no view of that broken piece, or of you repairing it in the video.
      It seemed like you edited that part out.
      I did not see the "other video" you speak of.
      I really miss your stunning logic and methodical train of thought.

      HUBBABUBBA DOOPYDOOP Thanks man- sorry my answer maybe came off as brash but I misinterpreted your comment. There were several people who accused me of cutting the wire for sake of the video- as if I would do that on a customer's car (or need to do that). It pisses me off.

    First of all, I am no expert on diagnostics like yourself. With that said I just learned how to use my multi meter because of you. Now, I could really use your help. A/C stopped working during a miss fire on #2 - 2012 nissan altima 2.5 s sedan after I got thru putting on all new coils and plugs. Turns out a plug was bad. During the miss fire I broke a cardinal rule of driving while check engine light was flashing up to the auto parts store. Very violent experience to say the least. So what I've done... I have 13 volts coming out of the power supply lead going to the clutch. Clutch is free spinning from compressor, never had a problem with it. No pulley noise and pulley running fine. Clutch not engaging since the miss fire code, thus no A/C. I think it's something easy like electrical and not mechanical. Do you have any ideas for a guy just trying to do a little wrenching to save money with a little talent I possess.

      while there are 13 V to the compressor clutch connector, that won’t account for possible voltage drop. easiest thing to do is apply battery voltage directly to clutch. if it doesn’t work, it’s your compressor. if clutch activates you either have a voltage drop on the wiring OR you have a shorted ground side control.

    Help please. First of all thanks for posting this great video. Here is my story. An almost similar story made you think AC Compressor Load but I'd like to give you more details.
    2012 Malibu 2.4l
    Engine was replaced and AC came on and off and then disappeared. At 1st, I thought LEAK...
    Please let me point out I have basic or less than basic electrical diagnostic skill.
    2 days ago, I decided to check for power and ground at the compressor connector after making sure all fuses and relay were good.
    I found a broken power wire (green) at the back of the connector.
    I connected the 2 wires temporarily, started the car and switch the AC, the clutch engaged and I could feel the air.
    HAPPY I FIXED IT, i just need to connect wires well for good.
    Yesterday, i woke up with this task in mind but since the wire cut at the connector was so small, I went to Chevrolet and purchased a brand new connector.
    THE BEGINNING OF MY NIGHTMARE NOW.
    I cut power and ground wire and, despite trying to be careful, I connected the wires to the wrong sides of the connector, not sure, but I had ground and power at the end of the Compressor connector. Plugged it, started the car and fuse blew. Replaced it, tried again fuse blew 2 times more.
    I tried to plug a bi directional scan tool but it would not connect to the control module; it is as if, my scan tool is not plugged.
    My neighbor put a wire on the ac clutch fuse to bypass it and I ensure to reconnect the power and ground wire like they are supposed to be. Scantool still can't connect.
    IM VERY CONFUSED AND THIS IS WHERE I NEED YOUR LEAD.
    1- My first thought is AC CONTROL MODULE BURNED DUE
    (I do not know where the AC control module is located).
    The AC control panel buttons seems to be working.
    2- Could the AC Compressor be burned by the wrong wire connections?
    3- Since the fuse kept blowing before we bypass it, I also thought another broken wire but I don't know since compressor clutch still wont engage despite bypass.
    4- I get 5V at the AC Pressure switch; could the AC pressure switch be the issue?
    What do you think?

    you're my hero. i want to do what you do, now. i'm legally blind and can't legally drive but i LOVE cars and fixing things in general. since i get disability i don't have to work but i can't sit around all day watching gameshows. i'm tempted to post on craigslist for free car repair. advice?

    My name David from Houston,tx I just want to say thank you.... My gal Acura ac went out... I don't know much about ac system until I saw your video... My gal was panicking and about to call a mechanic...I ask her to let me check it out...It was a brown fuse... I just imagine how someone could be paying much, for something very simple... thanks

    I passed 3 ASE's on Monday, Brakes, Electrical, and Powertrain diagnosis. Those tests were brutal. Days later I was still suffering from the mental exhaustion of it. I'm usually better on paper than in the real world, but they'd throw so many weird things in on electrical issues that you wouldn't expect, but all that thinking actually made me better on electrical than I was before the test.
    There were a few things I didn't get quickly before the test, that I do no, including how you went to an outside ground to see what was going on with the wiring passed the relay. Brilliantly simple. The kind of thing that I think was on the test, well, never. However, I'm sure thanks to you and other information, which has helped me get better, your simple test was the sort of things I thought of during the test to simplify complex circuits.
    ASE prep and tests themselves all suggest to test for issues like yours with the circuit of and with ohm's of resistance. They do teach correct load testing, but then fail to use it when it's best. What if the circuit is always hot? Then you'll potentially damage your DVOM (they liked to call it a DMM) when testing for ohms when voltage is present!

      Some non-digs on the ASE...the test exudes pressure to look to relay's and testing through them as in real life I do find that an effective way to find issues...
      Another non-dig - studying alone wouldn't have got me to pass, and they do require at least 2 years of experience. Hmmm, several years of 20 hours a weak DIY to them doesn't count as "professional" experience. Heck, I counted it anyway. Thankfully, I have a business to house my experience under.

    my mechanic has replaced all components. still not working properly. he advises the compressor is not coming on because the circuit blew and i need to replace the engine computer.. He did test system and it holds freon. compressor is new. the max light does not come on on the switch. my question is how do i know the switch is not the problem

      You just check for continuity at the switch. Or simply bypass it and see if it works.

      Why have you chosen to be so defensive with potential subscribers comments. If they all seem to you like rubbish ignorant kids who are just posting dumb comments on your videos than why not disable the comments altogether? Would seem wise given that after just reading 2 to 3 of your back and forth replies to comments has me understand why it is that your channel stands where it's at. If you could ignore your unnecessary catty need to speak negatively on other specific yt mechanics, your videos are informative and would be helpful to the less inclined in auto mechanic repairs.
      Now with that I couldn't support your method or belief in teaching, so I'll be sure to avoid your channels videos in the future which I can guess you won't be bothered by that but also I'm pretty positive that I'm not the first to think this way.

    Rev up your engines! lol - First 5 minutes of nothing but rambling on about nothing! The first thing I and most people do is go to is the fuse box and swap relays, duh! Not hounding or arm chair diagnosing, but that sort of diagnosis is simple and yes it is obvious to just about everyone!

      I don't usually put anything on youtube. I actually run a business and make a living doing auto repair and heavy recovery. I actually provide honesty to my customers and help our schools train our new guys coming to the field.
      You sit on your little chair in your little garage diagnosing things for people.You said yourself you don't even fix them. lmfao. What a joke. You can diagnose them but you're not competent enough to do the repair. I've ran in to a lot of folks like you in my day. We call them posers.

    I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee i ride and a parts jeep 96 Cherokee Country. Ok My ac compressor locked up on the 2000 . it wasnt working and was making funny noise b4 it finely locked up. So i knew the one in the 96 was good so i took the 96 off but the lines attach different on the 2000. where they go in the main back on the 96 and on the top of the 2000. So i changed the back out so i could use my 2000 lines etc. I put new oil 4 oz. ruffly maybe a little more and it took the oil fine but will not take the freon. I paid a guy 25 bucks to have it vacuumed and had no leaks but it still wont take freon. could a bad AC pressure switch cause it not to take freon or maybe the condenser is stopped up when the compressor locked up and iit got metal in the condenser and stopped it from taking freon or what... Im at a lost and dont have much money...but I need my ac bad. i have a hard time breathing when i get really hot... So all help appreciated...

    not just adding refrigerant but one that contains stop leak and oil. adding more oil makes evaporator heat transfer worse

      They turned it off soon as I brought out DVOM instead of test light hahahaha. Actually I was going to do all the tests using a test light just for them- But at the same time, I also wanted to do this diagnosis conclusively the first time lol.

      I generally grab my test light when it's the better test for something or I can't find my DVOM. :)

      But then...I'd have to have misplaced my PowerProbe as well, as sometimes I hook it up in ingenious ways just to see the voltage my dvom would have shown easier. Ha.

    Nicely done Mat. Reminds me of my problem. An Aircon that runs, deactivates and activates again.
    Not new. Used to be fixed just by putting contact spray on the pressure switch connectors. Looks like I have to go there again.
    Some genius put the Switch directly into the airflow of the engine and aircon cooler. So it gets blasted by saltwater every winter. And for some reason after 27 years it is taking it not that well anymore.
    Ill see if I can reproduce the error while not sitting in the car. If so i'll pinpoint the defect and think about a solution.

    some local said ; $50.00 for a tune up on the system. It just stopped on the way home from work. 5 years ago. what about this low pressure switch going bad. I have a paper clip to jump it across. Could that really be it? 92 4.0 cherokee.

    Thank for telling me to look and look compressor was not kicking in. Work fine one day not next check R134A ok well thought was But checking cables found a rubber pipe spilt cut 1/2 inch off compressor worked then need to fill system nice chilly for our 3 days of summer we get in UK

    In the run up to 12:29 in the video you had the voltmeter across the load side relay contacts. You would be unlikely to see a potential difference between the two relay load contacts - even if the load was passing current. With an open circuit as you had, the relay load side terminal would be floating. That is why you didn't read a voltage. This of course changed when you rearranged your meter leads to reference to the engine (which is grounded). If your load hadn't been floating the load current would tried to pass through the DVM.

    Some people do not have any mechanics build I do not know how to check how big electrical system on an AC system so when you go to jump start an AC system you have to make sure the you have the correct wire for the positive and the correct wire for the negative when it comes to the pressure switches especially a three wire pressure switch do not put power directly into the wiring harness on the pressure switch when you have the ignition switch on you can use your voltmeter and ammeter to check to see if your having voltage but do not feed voltage into the wiring of the pressure switch for AC compressor wiring but you can jump start the AC compressor disconnect the wires from the AC compressor if you jump start the AC when you're disconnecting any type of electrical connections turn off the key these are simple things that will help you I hope my information has helped people some people don't know that you have to shut off the ignition switch before you take off I'll kiss him back any type of connection I hope my information has helped you everybody have a good day yes you need to know the theory of how the air conditioning system works and there are a lot of good videos on the internet to show you how to do things

    Good point made for the visual inspection! You have a problem, as a fact, so u batter start examin the system by overruling the posible problems. Thats the only way to find t problem, everything else is a waste of time!
    I have a friend that does the "Visual Inspection " for ours.😄
    But on the end is me that fixes all his problems.

    Interesting personality. Like your tools setup. Always looking for good tools. Great way to test relay. Had the same issues so this helps. I dont do ac but cars are old and local mechanics have failed me too many times.

    One trick to release the ac clutch u can wire from ur battery to the fuse panel with clamps and it turns the clutch over

    You could take the compressor relay out...remove the cover and push the contacts close..or jump the wire's where the relay was, and that would confirm that the compressor clutch engages.

      Why would you want to do that when load side feed was confirmed after the switch? You already know that power is there and the clutch still won’t engage due to lack of feed.

      @@SchrodingersBox when you first walk up and start to work on it...pull the relay and jump it and that tells you that the compressor clutch works...and its from the relay back, or whatever controls the relay, that is what Im saying....The wiring to a compressor is not always as easy to get to as the one you had.

      I did that- with the test light. Thats how I diagnosed the problem as open load side feed after relay.. If you just jump the relay and the clutch doesn;'t engage then how do you know the location of the open? The test light is way better because it tells you where as well as if.

    I have traced the wiring system but i didn't see anything, i also used a diagnostic tool but the diagnostic tool didn't detect the name of the vehicle
    Sir i need your help, i have even changed the relay that controls the compressor and it still did not work.

    Thanks for this helpful video; excellent logical approach to an a/c fault. But I don't understand why a cleanly cut wire caused a working a/c to suddenly stop working while driving. Wasn't it more likely to have been accidentally cut during an unrelated repair, causing the a/c to not work since then?

      Yes good point. The severed wire was the result of a incorrectly made butt-connection on a previous repair. It appears the crimp severed through the connector and it broke “clean”.
