The crossing bells were sounding because the next train had activated them, and was following pretty closely behind the departing Metra train, though on the center track. Even though it's a quiet zone for its whole length, it's common practice on this line to sound the horn when approaching a grade crossing if another train on a different track has just cleared it. There have been many accidents near here involving pedestrians not paying attention and getting hit by a train on the next track.
Very different than the 3-mile long trains running west from Needles, CA across the Mojave Desert on ATSF line. Barstow has a restored depot with outdoor and indoor RR museums. It's a BIG train town. And east to Kelso on UP line is another depot in great shape. Those lines share from Bakersfield to Mojave "with privileges."
Thru Op Livesaver, I remember being shown that video of the woman and her lawyer, and the woman getting nailed by the Naperville/Rt. 59 express train on the center track at Fairview Av. It was the unedited version, and everyone (including me) in the class were only 8 years old.
Busy with Metra (high traffic) & Amtrak during morning and evening rush. Super busy with Freight, Metra (light) & Amtrak during late morning and the afternoon. Depends on season, but expect to see 5-12 trains each hour.
Fantastic video with great train action. Love those signal gantries too. Interesting that the top signals are used and the lower signals not, although one was flashing red, near the end of the video.
Enjoy this! I miss watching the green E9’s pulling the commuter trains, and Amtrak rolling the California Zephyr/Pioneer/Desert Wind. Still interesting piece of railroading. Thanks for being quite a ways back from crossing gates as videos with the bells drive me crazy. Thanks for posting!!
I like so much of your work. This video is quite a bit choppy though, with excessive zooming and panning, and cuts that don't appear to make sense, in places almost like an attempt at producing a two-camera edition with only one camera. It's difficult to keep some perspective with long zoom shots. Glad this is not typical. Thanks for posting so many.
Glad you caught the target signals changing! Why the bell sounding at 2:59 when the train was departing? Why the next train sounding the horn when others not? Thank you for you videos.
Even though this has been a quiet zone for more than 30 years, I'm beginning to question the safety of the quiet zone. This is why, I think, trains need to sound their horn -- to get the disoriented/drunk pedestrian to pay attention to where they are. I get sickened every time I hear of a train accident involving a pedestrian, especially when they are in quiet zones. I think safety should be prioritized over so-called 'quality of life'.
Both Amtrak, and the freight train were exceeding the speed limit for unsafe weather conditions. No wonder there are so many derailments. I love riding the train, but it seems so unsafe now a days.
Can I please use parts of your video for a music video featuring Enya, Trains and winter Rains please? I have an example on my channel if you're curious on what I'm trying to make?
I am a retired CSX Engineer. Nice shots, brings back memories. Good job. I always liked rail buffs, nice people.
