Glad to hear of your love for the bike. Hopefully mine will last as long as yours. I don’t think you’ll notice too much difference. In a way I prefer right way up forks as they need less maintenance, at least in my experience. @@CodgerBiker. Yeah been here 20 years loving it was funny said to the wife I want to get a bike,ok let’s go and have a look while there she said I get the same passed her test. We go touring together great fun.oh we did the side stand foot and centre stand.
Afaik 2022+ only adds new front fork and new double disk brakes. If you're happy with your bike maybe just think of buying a better performing front end?
How refreshing. Thank you. A video from someone who’s going to use the bike for what it was intended for and not spend thousands on transforming it into a super off roader wannabe. Never understood why those owners didn’t just buy the right bike in the first place.
Ace videos! I’m waiting for my Honda CL 500 Scrambler to arrive, end of March / April, my retirement present to myself, staying with Honda, my last bike CX 500, when it arrives! In the van, up to Scotland, by heck lad you’ve wetted my appetite!!!
That's a great video! I love the angle changes between the gopro of the helmet and the insta360 of the bike, the shots are smooth and we can see very well what you want to show us. I've been riding a CB125F for just over a year now, and the CB500X makes me want to get my license so I can ride it. Ride safe, greetings from the French Alps!
Hello Codger, I have a "22 CB500X and have done around 14,000 km, not too bad I think for an old codger getting into his late '70's. Agreat bike for newcomers and old guys like me who need to downsize. I've fitted SW-Motech crash bars on mine and a centre stand which works fine. I wonder if you can pass on any detials about the prop stand foot item you got from Amazon, a good feature when stopping on dodgey ground. Thank you
I like the bike more each ride - agreed 👍 Sidestand foot is this. Very cheap. Works fine so far: Lorababer Motorcycle Foot Side Stand Extension Kickstand Pad Plate Anti-slip Sidestand Pad. I have no links to them.
Nice one, Codger. I picked mine up just yesterday, also got around 150km on it, still pretty chilly around here. First thing I also did was raising the screen, but since I am 190cm tall, I still get some windbuffeting but raising it def made a difference. Not sure whether I'll get a bigger screen or some sort of extension as you mentioned, but I think I might just get used to it :) Not doing much of a motorway anyway. Ordered a radiator guard as well, was thinking of maybe DIY something to protect the oil filter as well, but I like how you sorted that out with the wee mudguard extender, might get one. Enjoy the bike man, it's a nice nippy little thing, can't wait to reach the 500km mark, or maybe 1k after the first service to finaly hit the revlimiter :D Stay safe, greetings from Bavaria!
Thanks for watching. Weather variable here, I managed to pass 400 miles today. I’ll wait for first service (especially oil change) before giving it the beans. I added a cheap eBay spoiler to mine (€15) works good on motorway. Worth a try. 👍👍
Added a comment on an earlier vlog regarding a Matt screen protector from an eBay seller, well worth it as it really makes the screen easy to see and stops any scratches. They also do TomTom Matt screen covers as I have done both on mine and 100% well worth doing.
Hi codger. Thanks for touching on the points I mentioned to you (mainstand/hazards) It's uncanny all the extras you have fitted so far I have done the same. Great minds think alike 😉. It was good to see the hazards flash under hard braking feature! I totally agree about it being a great little bike if your ego is not to big. I plan to ride to nordkapp this year on mine. I'm sure it will do just fine. I'll kick back and enjoy the scenery while doing 90-100mpg 👍
Great to have someone to share the new bike experience with👍 I bet you didn't soak the bike in petrol! Embarassing as I have filled up 1000s of vehicles and never done that before. Main thing I'd add is the 56 litre Givi top box and Tom Tom GPS. I put a clear tank protector on my CB500F. Good thing is if I got a CB500X I could transfer all the extras over from my CB500F.
@@CodgerBiker I was a bit unsure about the top box first but now after 3 years I find it insipensable - puncture kit, bike lock, waterproofs and shopping.
Yes they are really useful, and if you already have it why not transfer it over. I just prefer soft luggage where possible. I too carry wet gear, puncture gear, compressor etc and would not leave home without it. 👍👍
Ref tires. I have the cb500x 2018 gen. My next set are the Dunlop mutant. I was looking at pilot roads but the cost was high. Budget bike - cost effective tires. Thoughts?
They are on my list of choices also. If you check out Riding With Campbell Zero One channel, he sings their praises. So I am certain they are fine. My only thoughts are A) depends on type of riding we'll be doing - on this bike for me it is 100% road. It's not a fast accelerating bike, but corners well on good rubber. B) Even on a budget bike I'm minded to never skimp on rubber or brakes. I'm still on the OEM tyres 3000 miles in. Also those Michelin are renowed for big miles without losing performance so may be cheaper in long run👍
With those thick gloves you have there, I'd suggest some Oxford heated grips. The grips are a tad larger in diameter, which tends to help with bins as well. I live north of Seattle, Washington USA. Similar weather. I can ride my DRZ400 down into the low 30's. Fahrenheit that is. With summer gloves. Gets so hot on the high setting, it will nearly burn your hands. Like you have to occasionally take your hands off and hold them in the wind to cool them down. Just an idea for ya.
I've had Oxford before, very hot! But I don't like the button. Someone just told me there is a newer, neater version. But I fitted some in Summer by Koso, not as hot, but neat. Cheers! 👍
I’ve brought a Puig touring screen which is about 10cm taller than OEM screen which for me hasn’t made a great deal of difference to the buffering so I added a cheap wind deflector which I don’t like as I think it looks ridiculously huge so now I’ve fitted a WRS small screen which acts just like a nose screen so the wind blast is more like a naked bike which is more comfortable on long days out..overall very pleased with the cb500x.
It's so very personal. I've found a cheap spoiler on stock screen works best. But on very hot days I'd like a 'no screen' option for smooth air flow. Sounds like you have that 👍
Just to note, engine oil is checked with the bike on the sidestand, not the centre stand. There is usually a difference between the levels, though you could work out the offset. Same thing applies to chain tension.
Are you sure about oil check? Seems unlikely. Most bikes I’ve had you check vertical. User manual says to check oil with bike in ‘upright position on a firm level surface.’ Usually because you get different leans on sidestand, whereas vertical is vertical the world over.
@@CodgerBiker yes, I'm sure on the oil check. Put it on the sidestand, the observe the level while lifting vertical. Bit awkward. My Cbf1000 shows different oil levels between the 2, as has every other bike I've owned that's had a centre stand. I have a Cb500x on order (same colour as yours!), I've read the manual and I expect it to be the same the cbf. I prefer dipsticks...
Okay, same as all my other bikes. Not leant over as I thought you were suggesting. It’s not much difference on centre stand or held level tbh, the ground level is more critical. Chain adjustment of course as swinging arm would sag 👍
Dirt bike Brembos tend to favour rear a bit more. That's thing about 1st impressions though, bike can be much better after a thousand or so miles. Good to know 👍
The price is too high for the CBx now the Hornet is here for £7000. Put a screen and bar risers on a hornet and you've got nearly the same thing with double the power and less weight for nearly the same price. To be fair, the Hornets price is making a lot of middleweight bikes look stupid right now.
It won't work. That's why they made the Transalp. I tried a similar exercise with a 790 Duke, but in the end traded in for a 790Adv. The Hornet is great for what it does out of the box. I'm very happy with my choice. Suits me. 👍
Hi Codger, when I test rode the CB500X I found the wind noise from the screen awful and I come up short (in many mays) at 5’7”. I googled it and found it’s a common problem with lots of suggestions from Palmer mounts to all sorts of different aftermarket screens. I found the same issue with the Tiger Sport 660 screen but the Tiger 850 Sport was much better. With the resources of Honda and their F1 wind tunnel you would expect them to be able to design something better. Once you get it sorted I can see you doing lots of tours with Dr J in the future. 😊
Yes it is a perenial problem with all Adv bikes. I don't think there is a one size suits all solution. I guess it keeps the Aftermarket guys going. But, as you say, DrJ reports the 850 Sport works well. Cheers! 👍
Try a clip on windshield extender, made a world of difference for me (I'm 6'-3" so was getting a lot of head buffeting, all gone now). Cost me $30 CAD to fix that issue.
At present I ride a truly classic bike: a Suzuki GS750 from '79, and get a LOT of looks and comments from other riders, and even passers-by in cars. Had the same bike 41 years ago, so, a trip to yesteryear...But...I'm not as strong anymore as all those years ago, this bike is becoming too heavy for me...So, toying with the idea of downsizing, especially weight-wise, this CB500X is almost 45 pounds lighter than the Suzuki...Power wise, I'd say that 47hp is plenty, but.....the question, 9 out of 10 times I drive with my wife on the back seat, how's the power then, when it comes to acceleration, taking over cars on the motor-way...The reason that I'd go for a new, and not an occasion, is the twin disc front brake...already saw a lot of YT movies that showed clearly the braking power of twin discs, as compared to 1 disc. Could you make a YT movie of a ride with a pillion, and comment on that?
Thanks for watching. Nice bike, I remember those. I never ride with a pillion. I'd not be inclined to say this would be the best 2 up bike on fast motorways. But somebody may read this and let you know. 👍
Hi there, great video thank you. New subscriber here. 47 yr old bloke new to riding and I have one of these beautiful bikes. You mentioned you moved the gear shift so you could fit your large boots. Is it easy to do? As i have the same problem treated myself to new boots and its a pig changing gear now. Lol. Thanks
First thing I do on any bike. I like my boots. Very easy. Cannot remember if I videoed it or not. If I did I shall post it on my channel tonight. These boots are made for riding 👍
Seems like a much better buy from a real owner than a 10 grand plus transalp that seems to do very little extra for a 3 grand premium unfortunately in TH-camr land bigger and faster is always better and price is irrelevant when it’s a freebie bike as 20 grand is pocket money apparently now according to some uk TH-camrs and anyone who thinks this differently is delusional 👍
Hi, Looking to down size from my Africa twin, don’t need all the fancy gadgets and the weight and size any more, there is a replacement for the CB500 in the new year (NC500 I think) already booked a road test with MilesKingsport in Hull, rumour has it its going to be the same price as the CB?
Well it's basically the same bike with a few tweaks, so hopefully it'll be sub-£7k. I loved my Africa Twin but it was just too top heavy for me. So I have the CB500x for road work and a 690 Enduro R for gnarly stuff. 👍
Good choices, I picked mine up a couple weeks ago and have added similar accessories + Puig crash bars & Scorpion exhaust. I fitted RR mount for GPS but it sits lopsided as there's no way to adjust it (the honda 12mm bar isn't level) so I might have to drill out the holes to allow some adjustments. Still getting used to having less power than I'm used to but having fun out on the country lanes. Enjoy.
I know what you mean, but I just ride more relaxed. It’s a really good second bike 👍 Weird on the GPS bar. I’m only guessing, but when I took the screen off it looked like the bar is just bolted in there. You might be able to adjust it, not sure as I wasn’t looking for that.
@@CodgerBiker yep maybe, I actually thought so too but the whole bar structure goes further down so doesn't look like I can just take it off to bend it. I'll try to figure something else out before I start drilling.
Hello again. I hope you see this. I do not think your GPS bar is the issue. I fitted a RR mount and it is wonky. The SW-Motech one, on the same bar, is straight. So I think it is the RR mount. I have same RR on my 690, but they have seemingly changed the design, I might try swapping them. I'll investigate and probably do a vid when time allows...
@@CodgerBiker you're right, I came back from 1st service a couple days ago and took it apart (the mount) and noticed a tiny bit of wiggle room so refitted it and now it's level. Fingers crossed it stays that way whilst riding.
Good to hear. I much prefer it to the SW-Motech as it is closer in. But that twist is driving me nuts (or more nuts!). I'll sort it when it stops raining - if it ever does. Maybe it is the slightly oval section of the gps bar. But I think it'll stay put once sorted - it never moved on my Enduro and that takes some hammer👍 👍
Hey bud. Do you think you be able to get your hands on the new Honda Transalp ? Would be great to get your thoughts on it. I was out at the weekend in the outback on my WR. Think you would love travelling doing walkabout.
I'd like to try one. It was the bike I was waiting for BUT it only comes with tubed tyres just now. No good for UK motorways, so I was disappointed. But as the CB is much cheaper I got to keep my 690 Enduro. I'm happy for now, but will definitely get on a Transalp if demos come available... 👍
Nice one bud, I have found that putting the screen on low setting and adding a n ebay 30 quid deflector on top set in a vertical position totally stops any buffeting. Stick on a Denali sound bomb mini horn, a DNA air filter and a FUEL exhaust end can along with Michelin road 5's and you will be a happy chappie.
I've got a couple of eBay specials in the garage, will give it a go. Weird as there's no buffeting as such, just noise. Early days. Thanks for suggestion 👍
Power to us codgers, I'll try your buying accessories system & see if it works. I'm very considering a 500 to replace my CRF Rally, just a little more power would be nice, I like the idea of off road capability although never go near what the Rally can do. When you get older your mind wants to do stuff but your body says noooooo. Being a more codgerey codger than you. Keep up the good work.
I know what you mean. I did keep my 690 Enduro R for those crazy days when my mind writes cheques my body struggles to cash 😂👍 Thanks for watching and the nice comments. Good luck with the test ride and fill your shelves soon! 👍
wouldn’t buy a screen extension if I was you. I had the Givi tall one (about 15cm added) and while it does totally remove pressure on your chest and helmet there’s a ton of buffeting above 100kph, making it unbearable for more than 20 minutes rides… I just replaced the original today…
It’s always tricky with Adv screens. One thing I’ve learned (the hard way) is buffeting is personal. So many variables between riders, tolerance, body shapes, height, helmet design etc. I’ve found a £10 spoiler from eBay works quite well for me, for now 👍
Mate, you still need a little more practice. You only gave yourself a 25% discount there. 6 months is 50% Anything over one year and you got it for nothing 😂😂😂 I can't look at that screen without seeing a Spartan's helmet # #rorschach
Ha ha! Yes I see that face also. Reminds me of Starcraft too for some reason. But I’m sticking with it for now. I’ve applied a modified CZO strategy of 3% a day - inflation you know 😂👍

I doubt the engine would mine either way. Although upright position sounds right to me.
Rear brake will bed in after a few hundred miles. Mine works fine on my cb500x.
I hope so. But doubt it'll ever match the rear brake on my 690. But different types of bike also 👍
@Codger Biker I haven't ridden one. Seems to do its job for the cb. Mine has 1700miles on it now. Power feels good 👍🏼
Dirt bike Brembos tend to favour rear a bit more.
Cheers! 👍
I’m taller than you and the screen is fine. It can be a bit noisy when I use my cheaper helmet but it’s great with Schuberts.
So many variables, height and helmet being only 2. No one size screen yet devised in my experience, on any bike 👍
Try a clip on windshield extender, made a world of difference for me (I'm 6'-3" so was getting a lot of head buffeting, all gone now). Cost me $30 CAD to fix that issue.
Fitted. £12, 28cm, eBay 👍
Here you are, copy at own risk 👍 : th-cam.com/video/vKGmmrORib0/w-d-xo.html
Seems like a much better buy from a real owner than a 10 grand plus transalp that seems to do very little extra for a 3 grand premium unfortunately in TH-camr land bigger and faster is always better and price is irrelevant when it’s a freebie bike as 20 grand is pocket money apparently now according to some uk TH-camrs and anyone who thinks this differently is delusional 👍
Yes there’s a lot of specification on paper reviews, rather than real world usage 👍 I did like the Transalp though, but not it’s inner tubes ☹️
Any links for the rack options?

I’ve found a £10 spoiler from eBay works quite well for me, for now 👍
how tall are you?
175cm
The Brit test reports crack me up…do all their roads look like cow paths?🤪
🐄🐄🐄🐄🐄🐄🐄
WEATHER sounds like Michigan USA
Spring got to come soon 🤞👍
Mate, you still need a little more practice. You only gave yourself a 25% discount there. 6 months is 50% Anything over one year and you got it for nothing 😂😂😂
I can't look at that screen without seeing a Spartan's helmet # #rorschach
Ha ha! Yes I see that face also. Reminds me of Starcraft too for some reason. But I’m sticking with it for now. I’ve applied a modified CZO strategy of 3% a day - inflation you know 😂👍
@@CodgerBiker It's an amazing system. Satisfaction guaranteed 😉😂
It's great and stealthy. I might buy a 1250GS, Johnny Cash style, one piece at a time 👍👍🤣
