the earlier version titled jock-a-mo predates the dixie cups by over a decade but failed to chart. they were sued but paid some royalties to keep their hit version. because the dixie cups song was so very prominent in the early 60s birth of "hippie counterculture" and with its new orleans roots with the mardi gras indians such it became a favorite jam of the white american music thieves called grateful dead and they would jam live but it was never released in the studio i dont think probably cause of copyright..
Thats one way to look at it but can you really tell of anothers true intention not being in their position. I never really seen them as making alot of money or even wanting to at that point ....
